Well there is something called the Disney Pixar theory. Some believe that all Disney movies and the pixar movies are connected. And that the Disney and Pixar division was a part of a bigger plan. Basically the theory is that they want to connect every cartoon together in one world one timeline.

What I especially like about the Hercules reference in the song is the fact that he doesn't look like Disney's Hercules and he runs away scared...passing the chore it to Luisa...I see this as Luisa having Imposter Syndrome - "you feel as though at any moment you are going to be found out as a fraud" just adding to the internal pressure that she is feeling/placing on herself.

Animation-wise, I'm still amazed at how intricate the detail actually is on the physical characters themselves.

Your mom being a therapist makes so much sense. She's just seems so warm that I instinctively wanna trust her. Once again, you two together are a treat! Such great points and discussions. I didn't realize that there was an anti-chorus that kept building and went into an anticlimax. It makes so much sense because the entire song is addressing how Luisa keeps feeling this building pressure but that she longs for it to just stop so she can have that break (or an anticlimactic part of her day). Or worse, maybe it's highlighting that she feels close to breaking and that if the pressure builds too much she fears she'll break and won't be able to keep going because she's too burnt out to continue to help/protect her family and community.

As the eldest daughter, I was blown away by this song the first time I heard it - What got me was the line "I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service." It summed up, so well, the way I viewed myself from childhood - an attitude that I have worked and am working very hard to change. One of my DIL told me that "Surface Pressure" is the national anthem of oldest daughters and I can well believe it. I appreciated what you, Jacob and Mom, said about Luisa's learning how to relax and how to let other people take care of some things. SPOILER ALERT - this is especially well illustrated at the end of the movie where the 3 sisters work together to help raise the new casita. END of SPOILER.
I also appreciated the physical appearance of Luisa - a large, powerful woman. I read that Lin-Manuel (and others?) had to fight to keep Luisa's large, muscular build. I especially enjoyed watching her dance in "Surface Pressure" - even with all of the pressure she was expressing, she still found it in herself to dance - and to dance well, large body and all! A very very welcome break from the tiny, skinny Disney Princess trope!
I hope you both will continue to discuss more of the Encanto songs! My DIL (the same one mentioned above) told me that she had a surprise epiphany when she burst into tears the first time she heard "What else can I do?" and she realized how much she related to Isabella - the girl who always tried to be perfect - both for others and for her own ideas of her self worth.
Anyway, really fun reaction vlog - it made me smile to watch the affectionate way you both interact with each other!

I just want to add that it's not just oldest siblings. Im the oldest of 4 by 8/9/11 years respectively so there's quite a responsibility gap between me and them but each of my younger siblings have said they relate wholeheartedly to this song because they all had their own pressures growing up. My sister, who is the middle child of the younger 3 (coincidentally like Louisa), especially related and cried when she first heard it. Oddly enough, each of us relate to each of the children in similar ways but for different reasons. Or different ways for similar reasons.
So I know a loooooooooooooooooot of oldest siblings use this as their anthem (I do too) but I can't help but remind people that it's not always the oldest sibling who holds this type of pressure.

My partner’s friend sent them this video, and it’s accurate to the way my partner operates, and I weirdly feel for Mirabel here, actually. Seeing those cracks forming in the person who prides themselves on being strong and dependable, its so painful to watch that person and know that they won’t let you ease their burden. Figuring out little ways to help that won’t hurt their pride, won’t trigger their stubbornness or defensiveness, because you feel you need to make the world a little better for them SOMEHOW.

I love the symbolism when she says drip drip 💧 meaning a drip of water like when the faucet sometimes drips and starts to build up. The rhythm of the song is Genius ! It escalates like pressure does, but then there’s that release of pressure/ tension. It goes well with the character’s feelings

Keep in mind: mirabel is 15, luisa is 19...and already heading towards a burn-out. Just because a person loves helping and appears strong doesn't mean that they're not in need of r&r, and invulnerable.

  • @marcussabom2696

That, to me, is the heartbreaking part of this song. Is when Luisa says, "I know what my worth is." On the surface, saying something like that seems empowering and heroic.
But then throughout the rest of the song, it's revealed that she thinks she's only good for labor. She's internalized the idea that she's a beast of burden and labor like the donkeys she was rounding up. If she's not doing chores, if she's not serving, then she's worthless. That's the sad part when she says, "I know what my worth is", is she thinks doing labor is all of what she's worth and that she has put up this façade of being tough and that nothing bothers her.
She reminds me of the horse from George Orwell's "Animal Farm" who was so convinced that he could solve all the problems on the farm if he just "worked harder" until he literally worked himself to death.
Thankfully Luisa did not share that tragic fate, but the idea is the same.

I feel bad for her when she calls a tornado a light wind. Because to me, it shows just how much the continued pressure has warped her view on reality. Because anyone with sense should realize a person is no match for a tornado, but she sees this thing she realistically wouldn't be able to handle with just super strength and she sees it instead as a minor thing that despite her best (and realistically futile) efforts, still overwhelms her capabilities. Even without her super strength she has strength well beyond that of a realistic human (she drags an upright piano downstairs without help, it took myself and 3 other decently fit adult men to do that in real life and it still practically killed us, one person doing that is superhuman) but she is so used to doing things others seem hard or even impossible that when she comes across a burden or an obstacle she can't complete easily with her powers, it breaks her so much harder. She never really acclimatized to the feeling of helplessness which means she cant handle it properly. And she feels like she is the only person that can do the stuff she does (realistically anyone with a brain can round up donkeys, and if the townsfolk were smart they'd stop letting them loose, cause it sounds like it happens frequently, the townsfolk are lazy honestly), and so she thinks all of these things she does would never get done if she doesn't do them.

I also loved “if I fal-ter”!! The other lines in the song follow the same length and cadence, so you saw her faltering as her being imperfect. But when she’s in the clouds, none of those lines match and there are a lot more of those breaks, showing that if she let herself be imperfect she could relax. That slips away the second the next boulder threatens to fall on her sister. The skill of Lin Manuel Miranda and the whole team to put that together is remarkable.

Another wordplay that I don't really see a lot of people talking about is at the end when she sings "Who am I if I don't have what it takes? No cracks no...breaks. No mistakes, no pressure." When she says "no breaks" she uses it as in no cracks/flaws in her strong persona, but she also uses it as in no time to relax.

This is the first time I've heard someone mention how contradictory the statement "I know what my worth is"...is. It reminds me of when Isabella sings that she was told she would have the life of her dreams, because at the time she was getting ready to marry a man she didn't love. It comes across as bragging almost, but looking back, it's suppressed resentment, resignation and maybe a little bitterness.
Also, aside from Cerberus, Luisa was asked to "re-route" a river. Diverting a river was a part of one of the labors of Hercules

”I glow ’cause I know what my worth is” Is also a super sneaky reference to their glowing doors. While the family is whole and they all care and love each other and know their place in the family, the doors are glowing brightly and they have they Gifts. However, the moment they start doubting each other and their own place within the dynamic, the doors start flickering - no more glow. The brilliance of Lin Manuel Miranda’s lyrics. Perfection 👏🏻🙌🏻👍🏻

It would help if you turned on the closed captioning. If you're going to breakdown/analyze the song, it would definitely be helpful. At the beginning she says "What breaks the camel's back is pressure like a drip, drip, drip that will never stop" Like a constant drip will eventually erode and crack a rock. And if lyrics on screen bother you, you can pull up the lyrics somewhere else.

Not sure if there's a different term for it in music, but that lyric trick that you mentioned liking with "If i fal...ter" moment/line, in writing poetry is called 'enjambment', where you break a single phrase between two lines in such a way that the first part means one thing, but changes slightly (or massively), once the thought is carried through to the following line. There's a n example of this in Moana, too, in 'How Far I'll Go': "I know everybody on this island" on its' own seems to talk about how small the community is, how she's at home but feels trapped too, only to then continue, "Has a role on this island" and while the first part is still true, now it's change to include the idea that everyone has a place, but she feels out of place. (Which was fun for me because I'd literally just had that lesson in my poetry class days before watching Moana for the first time.)

Its so sad that many people just overlook one of the most important lyrics of the video: the iceberg scene.
The Titanic, named after the family, keeps on going straight into the iceberg, even though they could swerve around it, because she can just destroy the iceberg for them.
"Under the Surface, The ship does'nt swerve, has it heard how big the iceberg is?!"
You can see this throughout the whole movie, others just let her do everything even though they could just prevent them/do them themselves/are not that big a deal:
"The donkeys broke out AGAIN.", the church that "needs" to be moved a few meters to the side, all the heavy lifting, etc.

  • @pandorapanini6036

The part that you and your mom were trying to figure out in the middle of the video is:
A flaw or a crack (as shown by the breaking stairs)
    The straw in the stack
That breaks the camel's back (referencing the idiom of "the straw that breaks the camel's back", i.e. the one small, seemingly insignificant event that pushes someone past their breaking point)
What breaks the camel's back? It's
Pressure like a drip drip drip that'll never stop (an analogy to a slow leak just dripping forever. Even a slow leak will eventually cause irreparable damage, or even flood and drown someone, if nothing is done to repair the situation. And this is how burdensome the pressure feels to Luisa.)

Been loving these videos with your mom! She always has some great insight and the passion that you guys have for music is contagious. And yeah the animation done at Disney has gotten soooooo good! I’m an animation student and I’m always amazed at how much better and better it gets with every movie. Also I don’t know if you’ve seen them but there’s videos of the dancers they used doing the choreography and you can see it side by side with the animation it’s awesome! It is very common for animators to use live action reference because it’s very hard to animate something without seeing what it looks like in live action, but every movie they push the animation to a new level and it’s awesome to see the amazing music and animation complement each other.

I think it’s the “hey it’s your day to say, You’re Welcome! (You’re Welcome!) ‘Cause I’m gonna need that boat! I’m sailing away, away! You’re welcome! Cause Maui can do anything but float” where he changes perspective. Though the whole thing is such trickster energy, get you all jamming and distracted, then take the boat out from under you XD
Also fun fact: everything Maui sings about in the song are things he’s credited for in Polynesian folklore

11:55 "well, come to think of it..."
I love it too! 10:51 "if I fall" within "if I falter", with visual of hanging on a ledge giving the embedded lyric its purpose and recognizability... it's just like bonus lyrics to reward our close attention.
It reminds me of my favorite lyric from Drunk by The Living Tombstone, where "Don't wake me up from this spell I'm under if I'm still dreaming" forces us to hear "I___nder if I'm still dreaming" as "I wonder if I'm still dreaming" at the same time. And the meaning might even go deeper, because maybe it means that the narrator knows that the question of whether he is still dreaming is a very relevant question, but doesn't care to ask it. My mind was blown, and that whole song was full of storytelling things I'd never seen before... most of them were visual, but I liked the song too.

Fun Fact: Hercules is his Roman name. The Greek version you were trying to reference is called Heracles

  • @mardzzz28
    @mardzzz28 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree that Luisa is a very complex character!! Like in the movie, she sang about being the oldest sister and having to carry a lot of the family's weight and be the protector of her younger sisters. So, she's in this constant pressure of having to do it all, to anticipate all the dangers that can physically (and mentally) harm the family so she can protect them with the strength she was given. However, that expectation also keeps her from showing any vulnerability and fatigue because that show of "weakness" can potentially endanger and disappoint the people around her. Over time, that exhaustion builds up, especially when there's no outlet of all that negative feeling, and that causes unstableness and just a general break/crack on one's mental and physical health.

In this song I feel like when Louisa pulls up the ground and starts to sing the chorus that was her peeling the layers away and showing her emotions to Maribel because if you noticed after she pulled up the ground Luisa and Maribel are going through terrifying events you see that Louisa is handling everything that is put in front of them and if you look at Maribel she looks terrified and she's looking at Luisa for help but you can also see the Deep concern on maribel's face.

I didn't even think about Disney animated Hercules movie, I guess it's because of character design. That's not the same Hercules, but THAT is a huge missed opportunity, lol. Imagine if they used a 3D model of their animated Hercules for that scene, that would have been epic.
Be sure to look up Jessica Darrow on TH-cam signing this song with a jazz beat to it. It's quite nice!
