    Love this video. I’ve been to Torino about 8 years ago and fell in love with the city. It was multi sensory experience as i took in the food, the art galleries and museums, and the muted bustle of a city that felt like a small town. Now I want to go back and do a truly foodie trip next time.

      Torino is such a beautiful city. The blend of Italian and French architecture makes for such a unique and regal backdrop for a city. Love the interior of that restaurant. Old world elegance that we do not see today. I hope they are in business another 100 years. How do you eat so much and not get sick? Do you actually swallow or do you spit it out when the camera is off? I read that is what they do when making movies. Good to see you are back making vlogs.

    Another wonderful video, Mark. Never thought of Turin as a place to place visit in Italy - I just placed it on my list!
    About your mention of Unification - it wasn’t a glorious event and the outcome horrible for the Kingdom of Two Sicilies. Until the war for unification in 1861, this Kingdom was noted as the third largest industrial economy in Europe and had immense wealth. In comparison, the Piedmont Kingdom was inconsequential and deep in debt - sponsored by House of Savoy. By making a play for Two Sicilies, after installation of young son as king (post father’s death) under guise of unification the victorious Piedmont moved Sicilies huge gold reserves to the north as well as its industries. This led to poverty and vilification of southern Italians and their movement out to North/South America (before 1861, by new large only the impoverished northern regions saw immigration out.
    Anyway, a little long winded but important part of Italian history - thankfully coming to light only over past few decades.

    • @rkngl807
      @rkngl807 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s not entirely correct. Yes, the north after the unification exploited the south and with time the gap between the two widened but before 1861 the south wasn’t richer or in a better place than the north. Certain areas of the south were rich almost as some of the north and poorer areas were present in both, but the south wasn’t richer. The north actually was, despite of a higher debt of the House of Savoy.
      The unification was indeed a glorious event under many aspects but that doesn’t mean that everything was perfect. The north exploited the south and downplayed its economic situation prior to 1861 for many years, sure, but passing the Unification as a tragedy and the destruction of a much richer kingdom is a big stretch. Keep in mind that some resentful southern Italians tend to oversell the situation of the Bourbons’ kingdom.

    • @freiheit3566
      @freiheit3566 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rkngl807 Looking at the full and admittedly complicated bit of Italian history and data, not so sure that some southerns are overselling. By 1861, Two Sicilies had 455m gold lire, representing 2/3 of all pre-unitary Italian states (Piedmont - 27m); this gold covered 100% of currency issued whereas Piedmont about a third; post unification,the kingdom bond debt around 25% of total (paying lowest interest rate of all entities) with Piedmont around 44%; Kingdom was listed third position in 1856 at Paris exhibition after England and France in industrial development; although gdp per capita was perhaps 20% higher in Piedmont - factoring debt reduces that distinction. Also, those from the kingdom that disagreed with the unification were considered “brigands” and were hunted down. That along with flow of Wealth/industry northward, land reform, no wonder why Italians from southern region sought jobs/opportunity abroad - in huge numbers decades later.
      Knowing this bit of their history, really sheds light (albeit 161yrs later) on why many moved to US and prejudice faced in Italy to this day.
      Water under the bridge now. Aside from nefarious manner of unification, creating an “Italy” was ultimately best. It is a wonderful place to explore from top to bottom!

    • @rkngl807
      @rkngl807 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@freiheit3566 you’re comparing only Piedmont with the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and not the entire North tho. Anyways, the Unification had pros and cons and arguably played in favour of the north but let’s not get carried away by feelings. The Bourbons’ kingdom wasn’t El Dorado like many southern Italians like to believe.

      Always with the same false "neo-Bourbon" story of contrast between a greedy Italian North against a plundered South "earthly paradise" that not even a naive kindergarten child believes? .... Useless gossip: the facts are that Turin was, and has remained, a splendid, solid and extremely elegant city, as shown in the superb video, while Naples (the imaginary "capital of paradise" according to the "neo-Bourbons") , as always, it remains dirty and full of problems, especially because it is populated by too many people (fortunately not all) rude, uncivilized and frustrated in their dreams ... Resign yourself, this is reality .... Good life .... To study history with more diligence.

    Thanks to the author of the channel for this fascinating video! It is interesting to see how people live in other countries! It is very important to know foreign languages on such trips. I would like to recommend to all travelers a practical guide to learning foreign languages by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages". This book contains a lot
    of useful tips on how to learn a foreign language for tourists, students, entrepreneurs and anyone who needs a foreign language in life. There are a lot of good tips on how to solve problems with the language from beginner to advanced level of language learning. It turns out that the traveler only needs to know a few dialogues and you can easily travel around the world! You don't have to spend a lot of time to fully learn a foreign language, you just need to learn what you can use when you travel. I wish everyone exciting travels!
