Hi Rena (and Jack)! Happy Anniversary to the both of you! I really resonated with your thoughts. This video (and many of your previous videos) made me emotional. I love documenting my experiences but have found it really discouraging to post about it online. Finding creators like you who are mindful about the disconnect between our online selves and the person we are in real life is really cool. It’s really encouraging to see that it’s possible to share my experiences in a more mindful way. I have also felt uncomfortable when being a “tourist” in another place because everything in Hawai’i feels so commodified. I am also born and raised on O’ahu. Moving to a more rural area on the island (during the pandemic) while passing huge resorts on the way to work always brings up this uncomfortable feeling. I don’t know how to explain it, but it does make me feel guilty when I have an opportunity to “play tourist” here. Sorry if this isn’t helpful at all haha. On a nerdy note I love the creative choices you make. From music to color grading and even the fonts you use. It all tells a nice story that is easy to follow and holds space for highlighting visuals and/or chatty segments. I think being creative and introverted makes for a really unique perspective and outlet to share what may be difficult to otherwise share. I love the calm, private feel your content has. Honestly, I admire it a lot and I hope to try making something similar one day.. This is so great. You make such beautiful content. We also struggle with just relaxing while traveling. We get the privilege of visiting fancy resorts often for work and sometimes it feels too over the top. I always feel most comfortable in small, family run hotels where you can feel the real culture of the place you're staying. But if you have the opportunity I fully believe you should live it up! We might be visiting this Four Seasons in the future so I'd be curious what your thoughts are now looking back.
Thank you so much! I believe that everyone has the right to make their own decisions but looking back, I still have conflicted feelings about staying at a chain international resort. In terms of relaxation/service, of course it was perfect!! But I do think that big resorts often consume a disproportionate amount of resources and I'm not too sure how much it benefits the local community. Just my honest thoughts at the moment!
