  • Directed by Doug Evans, Founder of Juicero and former CEO of Organic Avenue and Alan Pottasch of AMP Films. This was an interview that we did with Steve back in 1993 about Paul Rand.
It is amazing how similar Steve and Paul were.

Moral of the story: Don't be afraid to be a Paul Rand. Don't be afraid of your clients. If they don't respect you or feel you're not good enough, you don't need them.

I love the pauses. He really THINKS about what he is going to say - rather than just filling space with hot air.

I think that, for once, Steve Jobs met someone like himself, and got told "No." And he respects that. An artist who solves business problems.

In the many interviews I've seen with Steve Jobs, there is one thing he does consistently that I don't see a lot of other people do.
When asked a question, he always leaves a moment of silence while he thinks of the answer. Different than most that try to start answering as soon as possible without really thinking it through.

And yet. It is probably often cut out of his and other similar people’s interviews.

Steve is obviously a deep thinker himself. He's one of those people who takes time to consider the best way to phrase his response before retorting - rather than what most of us do: saying 'um' 'er' 'it's kinda..'

I love steve's dramatic pauses in his speaking. Not immediately after a question was asked, but mid sentence where he'd stop, and put together his next lines very masterfully. Also notable in his opinion of Microsoft around this era.

This interview shows one thing clearly; Jobs didn't know alot about graphic design and design in generell as alot of his former colleagues stated, but he had the intellectual capability to recognize its traits and appreciate them for what they are not being coscience about it, that those are fundamentals. Alot of the things he describes here talking about Rand is the absolute basic graphic design.

This is interesting because of the fact that IBM had Paul Rand do their logo, and now Steve Jobs went and had Paul Rand redo Apples. Both were competitors since the begging of the making of Apple. Besides the fact, Paul Rand was a smart man with design assets that could solve any problem.

God I wish I was at that level where I could say to a client "No you don't know your talking about, you don't have taste or know what good design is, I'm going to give you something, your going to use it and you have no say in it's design or revisions and I'm not going to do an endless back and forth with you and that's it.

As an engineer, I love the part about bringing solutions to a client, not options. After all, the client wants a problem solved, and a good engineer is able to instinctively know which "option" is best and worth exploring. So one might as well stop wasting anybody's time and just doing the right thing, instead of having the client choose between multiple alternatives.

this is raw footage, which is why there are pregnant pauses before SJ answers the questions. These are usually edited out, unless it's for drama. The take-away is don't be afraid to think long and hard before speaking when answering a question while cameras are rolling! It's way different when it's a live interview. SJ and Paul Rand are amazing, as is my friend Doug Evans who orchestrated this interview.

Joshua Kleckner most of the businesses have higher chances of failure (fact), so we (as designers) shouldnt bother, it is not our headache. We should be more focused on our quality of work and the income we are generating from that project. Along with money, we should also see the profile of the client you are serving, he might bring more projects to you in future (very rare).

If Bill Gates stole from Apple, Apple stole from xerox. Steve Jobs only feat was that he kept his company alive through persistence while companies like Commodore/Amiga (who at the time had better computers) gave up because they lacked the leadership of a persistent owner.

It has to be cybernetica or so to say the science of the reglisation-, stirings-, information- and communicationmechanisme or cybernetics or so to say the science of control in machines, communication, male-, female-, animals, idioom (word-use). Perhaps Paul Rand has also this opinion, kind regards.
