I’ve had the car for 10 days now & have to say it is spectacular. I came from a Tesla model 3 & the N is better in every single way. Not even on the same playing field. Only annoying things are the speed limit warnings & lane keep assist but you can setup the star shortcut button on the steering wheel to take you directly to these settings & turn them off every drive. One other thing I hope is Hyundai gives us more downloadable engine sounds in the future as I feel it could do with much beefier sounds. Just a heads up, with mixed driving over the last 10 days I’m averaging 3.0 m/kwh.
Thank you very much for your kind comment, and of course, for watching in the first place! I’m glad you enjoyed the review, and congratulations on your purchase! Rather too big for my requirements - and UK roads - so let’s hope that Hyundai’s N engineers sprinkle a little of their magic dust in forthcoming smaller Hyundai EV models.
Hyundai do not have hang-ups about how people pronounce their name. In Australia I bought my first one in 2000 a small (and brilliant) sedan with stick shift, a bit rough around the edges, had ALL the extras for no extra cost, but a million times more fun to drive than my beloved Holden EH. Anyway, in those days we pronounced it as Hiunday.

It's a bit of shame that in the 12 minutes dedicated to "Performance & Handling" there is so little dedicated to the latter. Surely, if you're going to convert so-called Petrol Heads (yawn) to a performance EV you need to speak about turn in, grip, exit speed, steering feel, balance on the throttle, pitch, adjustability etc etc. Yet all we get is a lot of hyperbole of how this car is "a line in the sand" moment - without the substance. I think that's a bummer, not least because the car actually does have a lot to offer in all those facets (yes, I've driven one). It's been kind of undersold here, in many ways - somewhat ironically.
Thank you. I have a 2019 M3 AWD LR, and I don't want to go back to Tesla anymore. I need something more comfortable with the same or more power than my M3. The problem is my wife will not use this power and will use it like a normal car probaly in eco mode, it needs to be comfortable. So, I don't know if it's more comfortable than my M3. My Tesla is completely paid off, so I will exchange it and have a lower payment on this one.

My family and I recently took out a Renault Scenic EV, nice car with nice range. However, my wife said a definite NO to the boot space as it's restricted in width between the internal wheel arch trims. Yet, when we looked at the Ioniq 5 N .... She was impressed with the space.
For a true reflection of its track abilities, look at Misha test it around the famous German Race Track. Also, Joe Achilles did a nice track test in UK.
I'm looking forward to getting a used one of these in a few years 70k USD is a bit too rich for my blood at 8% interest rates and insurance rates that are close to double what I pay now
We reviewed the car when it first came out, and also in a twin test with its cousin, the Genesis GV60. If you type the name of the car into the search bar at the top of our home page, it will show you the videos that it features in. Thank you for watching and your kind comment.
Do you think the high performance EV's are getting to dangerous for the average driver ? just like the group B rally cars did for the rally scene they became to hot to handle. The saving grace here is the safety systems on modern cars are first class.
I think the difference here is that this is not just a 600 bhp EV. It is more of a driver’s car and it feels a bit more controlled in terms of basic engineering. It also has, as you said, lots of safety tech on it. I do think that there are some EVs that shouldn’t have the power they do though.
Loved the review and car 👍🏻 Just a quick question tho, what were all the constant beeps in the review whilst you were driving etc Just a shame about the price £40k yes / maybe but, £67k with sunroof etc, all in, it’s a no, but maybe in it’s second hand value it’ll be good 🧐
A lot of the safety systems such as lane keep assist, speed limit warning and so forth default on, so that’s what the noises were. You can turn them off, but the always default to on every time you start the car. Unfortunately I didn’t have long with the car, and so with all the stopping to change cameras and such like, it just took too long to keep turning them off. So that’s what you were hearing. Annoying, but all new cars have it. Regarding price, you have to remember a standard Ioniq 5 Premium is over £50k, so this isn’t much more for so much more car. These aren’t small hatchbacks, and like I said, one of its main rivals, the Mustang Mach E GT is £75k…… Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
@@AutoEV which brings me to my main cringe about the so called ' 5 star ratings'. These things are supposed to aid safety, but just about everyone on TH-cam just wants to turn the bloody things off! I have been driving for about 60 years and some how, by a miracle it seems I have never had an accident. Now we are no longer capable of driving without these aids. I agree some safety systems are useful and handy, but surely some of them should interrupt only when there is a real problem, like if you were heading strait towards a car coming in the opposite direction, here in NZ this seems to be main cause of most really deadly collisions.
I agree with you on this car almost perfect I like the tweaking of the car settings! Unfortunately in Canada we have to pay a luxury tax on top of the already two outrageous taxes when we buy vehicles above 80,000 Canadian, which this one is with our corrupt government here it is getting to be rich and poor. No class left. I would love to purchase this vehicle, but one more negative we don’t get the optional glass roof and we don’t get the heads up display. I don’t believe either which is kind of a game breaker for me!
Thank you for your video, it´s really great and empathatic! I have only on question: For me, your seat position is way to far from steering-wheel. Is it only for filming or do you drive along with with this seat-position?
'up into sunny Scotland' , that is good ( tongue in cheek I realize), as we are off from NZ to England next month and will do a trip up to Scotland, I appreciate your optimism.
I can't speak for the rest of the world or US for that matter, but these don't appear to be selling well in the Atlanta market and my guess for the number one reason would be range or lack thereof, followed by the price. If it had a 300 mile range they'd be flying off the lots.
I would prefer to see the features of this car in the styling of the Renault Megan e-tech. The Megan has all the buttons to be able to provide these functions. Even the forthcoming Renault 5. The styling of this car does next to nothing for me.
I soooo wanted to put the clip in there as it’s such a funny scene when they are looking at the amps, but I’d have gotten into trouble with copyright! “Why don’t you just make 10 louder and it’s the top?” *silence* “These go to 11…..” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It’s not just the speed though. And that’s the point. Plenty of EVs are fast 0-60, but this is way more than that. This changes how we will see electric cars and how they engage with a driver.
@@AutoEV Understood, but if few can afford them, there won’t be much driver engagement! I personally am not a fan of raging horsepower noise, but that’s just me. Other EVs are affordable, and people buy them. I guess if everyone could afford Ferraris, Lambos, and McLaren’s, they’d be out on the road en masse. Same for this vehicle and the likes upwards of $65K. Times are hard for many right now, driver engagement is probably not at the top of the list.
No that’s a fair point. But we can’t ignore how good a car is irrespective of its price. It isn’t a car designed for the masses anyway, with more people looking for a spacious, efficient and affordable EV. But there are good examples of those that we praise too. I’m just making the point that this car is the very pinnacle of an EV for me as a driver. I can’t afford one, but that doesn’t stop me loving it for what it is.
@@AutoEV I get it. I love tech, advancements in engineering, but can’t afford the things I really think are exciting and innovative. I just believe that things, like this vehicle, are over priced. I’m not a businessman, but I think a lower price point would sell more vehicles, thus increasing demand, thus increasing profits. With a starting prohibitive price point, the demand will not be high. Maybe old school economics. I do like your enthusiasm!!!
But why does it need to be JUST for EV lovers??? You can turn those noises off anyway. Why can’t it be enjoyed by driving enthusiasts irrespective of how it’s fuelled??
The question is how can Hyundai possibly improve this vehicle? Personally I would like to see a smaller lighter EV with all the N technology that makes it so great (and a V8 engine noise as well)!
I want to see drift mode. Nothing else matters! My SE drifts fine with traction control off, and I don't have fake engine sounds. I just don't have giant brakes. How good is drift mode?
my son has a skyline and to him it is the world! apart from his wife and kids of course. He took me for a spin at our local track here in Hamilton NZ ( a year ago) and I am still shaking!.
I'd buy a lowered Ioniq 5 without all the power and extra weight and stiff suspension. And is the sun roof better than the standard sunroof which I remember being small?
The suspension isn’t stiff at all. Beautifully judged and well damped. And the weight has been kept down too. The sunroof is a full length pan roof, but it doesn’t open.
As an EV owner I love what Hyundai have done with this car but a small part of me is convinced that what we have here is like Meat Free Chicken or Beef, in other words those that are converted to EV world but still crave a little fossil beef dripping. 😂
All the benefits of an EV but all the fun of a hot hatch. This is the dawn of a new age of performance car, trust me! I’m off to see another next week that I feel could also be a bit of a cracker……
Maybe Hyundai needs to build a roadster. This sounds interesting but just want two seats and pretty much zero media/driver assist tech. Multi gen Miata driver and Lotus fanboy here.
New Porsche Boxster is going electric as is the indirect replacement for the Lotus Elise. The future is looking bright for driving enthusiasts who want to go EV.
If making a race car was required to get the rear wiper put onto the normal Ioniq 5 I am happy for those who want their EV to make funny noises and slide round corners (I don't see the point myself). I just hope making this model means that we don't get increased lead times on the normal Ioniq 5 which I am looking forward to getting from my company.
Hyundai: After going to the market, drive smoothly and take your wife home, then press the N button to go to the WRC meeting. :)

Hi, Just found your channel, I'm getting an ioniq 5 premium next week. Have you done a recent review of that car?
Love the channel.
Regards Kev
We reviewed the car when it first came out, and also in a twin test with its cousin, the Genesis GV60. If you type the name of the car into the search bar at the top of our home page, it will show you the videos that it features in. Thank you for watching and your kind comment.
I’ll put my thoughts of this car into one word.
WANT.
At least MG is the first to make an EV roadster and sell it, unlike Tesla
Do you think the high performance EV's are getting to dangerous for the average driver ? just like the group B rally cars did for the rally scene they became to hot to handle. The saving grace here is the safety systems on modern cars are first class.
I think the difference here is that this is not just a 600 bhp EV. It is more of a driver’s car and it feels a bit more controlled in terms of basic engineering. It also has, as you said, lots of safety tech on it. I do think that there are some EVs that shouldn’t have the power they do though.
It reminds me of a lancia delta integrale. I’ve been in one today in the showroom. A stunning stunning car.
Couldn’t agree more.
Very impressed your review!
Much appreciated!
10:23 - EV6 GT YOU ARE NOW DEAD TO ME...!!!😎
Waiting for that lottery win
That was spiderman!
It was actually Uncle Ben. But the movie popularised the statement, which was actually said by that French author, Voltare.
뉘르부르크링에서의 가혹한 서킷 주행은 이제 모든 현대, 기아차의 신차 표준 테스트가 되어버렸음.
As soon as you said brake horsepower I left the channel you don’t know what you are talking about !!!!!!!!!!!!! 😮😮😮😮😮
Eh?
@@AutoEVelectric motors have straight horsepower they don’t develop brake horsepower.
Force of habit. But if you’re going to judge me on an honest mistake, then fine. Sorry I let you down so badly.
Loved the review and car 👍🏻
Just a quick question tho, what were all the constant beeps in the review whilst you were driving etc
Just a shame about the price £40k yes / maybe but, £67k with sunroof etc, all in, it’s a no, but maybe in it’s second hand value it’ll be good 🧐
A lot of the safety systems such as lane keep assist, speed limit warning and so forth default on, so that’s what the noises were.
These aren’t small hatchbacks, and like I said, one of its main rivals, the Mustang Mach E GT is £75k……
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
Someone please lend me 65k NOW 😂
Thank you for your video, it´s really great and empathatic! I have only on question: For me, your seat position is way to far from steering-wheel. Is it only for filming or do you drive along with with this seat-position?
Looks and performs more like the Lancia Delta Integrale HF more than the Audi Quattro.
'up into sunny Scotland' , that is good ( tongue in cheek I realize), as we are off from NZ to England next month and will do a trip up to Scotland, I appreciate your optimism.
Well if Bryan loves it, and the Throttle House boys love it, then it really must be something special. AutoEV Car of the Year done and dusted already.
I can't speak for the rest of the world or US for that matter, but these don't appear to be selling well in the Atlanta market and my guess for the number one reason would be range or lack thereof, followed by the price. If it had a 300 mile range they'd be flying off the lots.
You like it then 😂
I would prefer to see the features of this car in the styling of the Renault Megan e-tech. The Megan has all the buttons to be able to provide these functions. Even the forthcoming Renault 5. The styling of this car does next to nothing for me.
And although it's not a primary concern with performance cars, the economy at c.5p per mile (charging at home) is unbelievable.
The Nigel Tufnell "this goes to 11" comment had me ROFL 😂😂😂😂😂
I soooo wanted to put the clip in there as it’s such a funny scene when they are looking at the amps, but I’d have gotten into trouble with copyright!
“Why don’t you just make 10 louder and it’s the top?”
*silence*
“These go to 11…..”
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@AutoEV lmao 🤣. Don't worry Brian, those who know know... As you were saying it all I could hear was Nigel saying that line lol. Pure class.
Hopefully they work out the charging issues in a 12-volt battery and ICCU issues that are becoming more common and as adoption rate increases
I bought a byd seal awd now im fuming after watching a few vids of this car! fml
Smile every mile...
The best that nobody can afford! I’ll keep my 60 mph in 3.7 secs that’s less than half the price of the Ioniq 5 N.
At 26 minutes , torque is lb.ft (a product) not "lb per ft" (a quotient)!
Pretend noises is for kids playing games on Xbox. No real lover of EV’s needs that😴👎🏻🤦🏻♂️
But why does it need to be JUST for EV lovers??? You can turn those noises off anyway. Why can’t it be enjoyed by driving enthusiasts irrespective of how it’s fuelled??
Wow, this is my first time seeing such a sexy car. It's a really great design.
Excellent review Brian ...I assume it still has the "back it out of a parking space with the key fob" facility? :)
Yes it does!
Well its faster cause goes to 11 rest can do only 10 so this one is One more better :D
Is it just me or was a bolt handing off the red front brake when it did a close up ?
The question is how can Hyundai possibly improve this vehicle? Personally I would like to see a smaller lighter EV with all the N technology that makes it so great (and a V8 engine noise as well)!
I can see more Hyundai EVs getting the N treatment. The Ioniq 6 is next…
You’ll still be able to buy the regular Ioniq 5 (with some minor upgrades) and it won’t be affected.
U r so freaking cute
I’m assuming you are talking about my dog???
If anything, you're enjoyment while driving the car sold me
Was it that obvious??😂
