if you grew up in the U.K. in the 70's and 80's, you knew this guy's face as the adult sports stuff would take over the kids cartoon shows and Tiswas!
So heres my tribute to that man with that funny name...
Richard John Davies (30 April 1928 - 19 February 2023) was a British television sports presenter who anchored World of Sport from 1968 until 1985.
His first job in broadcasting was as an announcer for Southern Television. In the early stages of his career, Davies was known by his full name, Richard Davies, but changed to Dickie Davies at the suggestion of his ITV Sport colleague Jimmy Hill.
Davies began work on World of Sport (initially called Wide World of Sports) in 1965 as an understudy to Eamonn Andrews, who was paid £40,000 by ITV to present it (about £825,250 at 2022 prices)-taking over the role of presenter in 1968 when Andrews left the show.
After World of Sport ended in 1985, Davies stayed with ITV, presenting boxing, darts, and snooker, as well as playing a part in their coverage of the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He left ITV Sport in August 1989.
After leaving ITV, Davies joined the original incarnation of Eurosport, which was then owned by Sky, and the European Broadcasting Union. He fronted their snooker coverage, including the one-off 1991 Mita World Masters. He presented sports bulletins from his home for Classic FM in its early days as its inaugural sports editor.
In 1995, Davies suffered a stroke, which forced him to give up his work on Classic FM.
He eventually made a good recovery, although it was a year or two before his speech fully returned to normal. In the late 1990s, he fronted Dickie Davies' Sporting Heroes

Oh your very welcome and it's really nice to get feedback off the family of the star, the tributes are dedicated too.
Ive never been a sporty person but i always liked his presenting style as a kid, like he was an tv uncle, with his pleasant delivery.
The people in comments have left many heartfelt messages of sympathy to your family.
I hope you all stay strong during this sad time but take comfort that Mr. Davies was adored by so many people.
      Thank you again for message.

That theme tune just takes me right back to mid 70’s, Dickie Davies, the wrestling , the horse racing , the vidiprinter , Canadian log chopping and climbing championships, cheese rolling and chasing and everything in between and none of it phased the suave and professional Davies , miss those days and RIP Dickie , a true legend of the presenting game . 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I never cared for sport on TV...but I took instantly to World of Sport. The music opening titles...and a presenter who made it all look easy and was in full control of his programme. W.o.S had different and interesting sports which made it stand out, but above all it had a presenter who spoke TO you, not down to you, but TO you, and was so likeable. A lovely tribute to a TV legend.

Never been a sporty person and as a kid, World of Sport and Grandstand was telly's way of saying "push off kid and go play out!"

A 52 year old who watched and enjoyed World of Sport as an 8 year old in 1979, right through to it's unfortunate demise in 1985. Dickie was the governor as far as I'm concerned (along with Des Lynam on BBC Grandstand) and was very knowledgeable and at ease covering a lot of sports (even the unusual ones). My only small pet hate of his, was his habit of referring to football as soccer, hence his hilarious slip up at the beginning of this video. Wouldn't have happened had he said "cup football". RIP Dickie Davies. All the many sports stars and fans in heaven now get to be entertained by you.

Back when kids controlled the mornings BRILLIANT children's TV schedule then world of sport came on and all the family could watch it ( if it was raining, otherwise we where out) memories of horse racing, motorbike races and the sport we all sat down to , the wrestling,, families singing Big Daddy,s theme and howling at Cat Weasels antincs. And Dickie Davies always the professional.dads respected him, mum's loved him and kids trusted him.

Aww man Dickie...reminds me of being a very little boy back in the 80's...Another piece of a lot of people's history sadly gone, but never to be forgotten. 6hrs every Saturday he'd be on...and my dad would do the horse racing and football results...newspaper out...cig in the ashtray, and their had to be silence...or we'd get a SSSSHH!. He'd also het the recap on BBC's Grandstand with the deep-voice fella saying...~ "League division one...Man Utd 3...Arsenal Nil..."....

I laughed like mad when he slipped up in the early part of this video. Interestingly enough, although World Of Sport from 1968 onwards was an LWT show, the Thames theme at the very beginning is not entirely inaccurate as I do recall Dickie hosting some of the Bank Holiday Sport editions that were broadcast from Thames.
