Soyamji (1,860 m) volcanic peak lies in North Machhipura (Handwara), which once erupted for 13 months in 1934 and is now a dormant volcanic peak. The other volcanic peak is Kharewa which lies in Pahalgam Tehsil, but it has not erupted so far. These volcanic mountain peaks are the cause of earthquakes in Kashmir. Both Soyamji & Kharewa are considered to be dormant state.
