    This video shows clips of a seminar where a two-person bunkai drill for the whole of Seienchin (Seiyunchin) kata was taught.
    It should be noted that the practise of individual sequences and the practise of techniques “out of order” was also covered. This short clip cannot capture the full seminar and it is not an instructional video.
    As with all flow drills, they are a part of the whole and they don’t replace the need to practise techniques individually (in line with the Ikken Hissatsu concept); practise the techniques in alternate order; and to practise the techniques within live and semi-live drills (such that they can be freely applied as per the demands of the situation).
    Flow drills are good for the time efficient practise of a given kata, and for practising moving onto the next method, without losing advantage, should the previous one fail. However, they need to be an integrated part of the whole.
    I hope the video if of interest and I appreciate you watching!
    All the best,
    Iain

    I love kata. I love pulling self-defense applications from the kata that aren't necessarily traditional bunkai. This demo is fabulous bunkai. The secrets of Karate truly are in the kata. Its just a matter of study and imagination.
    Thank you, Abernethy Sensei for this bunkai.

    Been practising this kata for about 10 years and this is by far the most convincing set of bunkai I've ever seen. Many thanks for sharing Ian!

    Better and more practical than what the vast majority of Okinawan masters teach.

    Karate isn't my art, Kung Fu is. But the movements are very similar. And I watch Karate Kata. I never would have been able to work this out on my own. Thank you for your outstanding instruction.

    At this moment, I'm learning this kata and from other videos that I've seen here on TH-cam, Iain's sensei bunkai applications is straight to the point with excellent over all assessment.

      thomas wildheart As far as I know the kata is found in goju ryu but also many other styles.
      But no reason people outside of that style can't practice it :)

    Is sad to see somebody changing the original meaning of the karate tecniques and every body approving all this mistakes. I practice Karate since 1989. These are not the meaning of this Katas. Very sad.

      I’ve been training since 1983, you must have learnt the new stuff that came out six years later :-) Joking aside, could you show us the documentation / evidence you have for what you claim is the “original meaning” i.e. the stated intention of the founder of the kata? Or by “original meaning” do you mean the stuff you originally learnt?

    In coding you learn "If Then Else: principle, and this video definitely utilizes that mindset of following up if the previous action didn't give the desired result. Interesting interpretations of all the movements. Karate truly isn't linear

    Love it. 5 stars.
    Coming from a goju/shotokan background, this is a Lara I've known for a long time, and never thought about half of what you're talking about. I've always taken it from a massively different point of view.
    Love your work. Love the podcast, guess its time to buy the books.
    Please let us know when you're in Australia next. :)

    Oh I love this series of videos on Bunkai. I'm coming from a Isshinryu background and I'm just eating this up (along with the book, "Bunkai Jutsu.") BTW, if anyone has any research material on Seienchin/Seiyunchin would you please pass it along? I"ve been looking around for the longest time on any kind of historical perspective on where it came from and it's influences. I suspect it had a heavy Chinese influence (since it's so close to "horse stance") but I don't have any historical sources to base that on. If anyone has the best idea of what sources to look at for Seiyunchin's background I would most appreciate it.

    b b but karate doesnt have grappling.

    • @trevinodude
      @trevinodude 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fun fact... Jesse Enkamp (another Karate practitioner who is on TH-cam) did some research (even going to Okinawa several times) to learn that modern karate is a incomplete martial art. It was never the most grapple heavy style, but old school karate has more grapples compared to the modern Japanese Karate that spread across the world. Thankfully since kata has been passed down regardless of learning karate old school, modern, or even the sport version, if you can find the practicality of kata (which is why this video exist) aka bunka, we could get closer to the completed form of karate as it was intended to be taught in the older days.

      @@trevinodude Karate is like dirty grappling tbh, wrestling range but you cheat by hitting all the time.

  • @kenkongermany7860
    @kenkongermany7860 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice. But I know a convincing version for the anti-bearhug explanation. The basic applications of this part of the kata are defences against grappling attacks from behind in my opinion. Because in other basic bunkai of seiyunchin, we give our back a little if they are jammed... . Maybe on the sideline of one of your seminars.

    • @audex
      @audex 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i agree, as a uechi and goju practicioner we understand seiyunchin is a wrestling kata, all the movements are aimed to take down oponents while clinching and hitting is not possible

  • @nedim_guitar
    @nedim_guitar 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been doing this form (I'm talking about the first movements), and pretty well too, but with no understanding of the technique. I've been trying to figure it out, but it was difficult. I've had a variation that I've been thinking about, and it doesn't mean that it's not correct, but it's not as fluent and connected as this. Great stuff, really helpful!
