  • This video is the result of two vistits to the bird hides at the nature reserve of Getterön, situated at the outskirts of the small western coastal town Varberg.
This was on our summer vacations of 2022. First visit was on July 14, when some hard south-western winds had been blowing for days before our arrival (and still was at it, albeit to a lesser extent). As a result an exhausted subadult Northern Gannet (havssula in swedish) had been blown close to the coast, and it had landed on the meadow close to the lagoon. There it rested for a few hours, when we were there, later it was reported to lift and fly out to sea again. Hopefully it had recovered fully, no way of knowing :-(
I took some video of it, of course...
Anyway, this was from the hide close to the local airport. We checked the lagoon for shorebirds from there. Everything is far away, spotting scope is needed. Despite that, I filmed what was there, and despite the great distance it's quite easy to see what's what. Dunlin, Oystercatcher, Common Greenshank, Grey Heron and Pied Avocet. (Kärrsnäppa, strandskata, gluttsnäppa, gråhäger och skärfläcka in Swedish)
After that we drove around the lagoon, to Getterön Naturum, and walked to the big hide there. Sadly, no shorebirds close, so I only filmed the Barn Swallows nesting inside the hide.
Second visit was August 17, when the situation was the total opposite: no fun to be had at the "airport" hide, many shorebirds close to the Naturum hide. (And the Barn Swallows were still at it, second clutches I guess.)
I could film resting Common Sandpiper, Common Greenshank, Green Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Common Snipe and a Lesser Black-backed Gull. (Drillsnäppa, grönbena, skogssnäppa, grönbena, enkelbeckasin och silltrut in swedish)

We will never really know (about the gannet), it's never a good sign when a seabird gets so exhausted it lands to rest... But on the other side, it at least flew off later the same day, so there is at least a chance it went on living its life to maturity!
