    Thanks for this one. My mom went to high school with Robert Zimmerman. She sang in the high school talent show that he sang in. Still has the yearbook. If anyone gets a chance need to look up the documentary on Hibbing high school it’s fascinating. The school was built with money from the mining company and is museum quality.

    Great song from a tremendous album. As with his other recordings and performing style, Dylan's voice has always been the primary instrument, but this seems especially true with "Blood on the Tracks". Maybe because the album held together as one work with a continuity that he somehow pulled off from the start of the album through the last song on the other side, despite the range of emotions that he expressed in his delivery and writing. One of the few albums that felt like a single work of art to me with no songs I wanted to skip to or over. Thanks for putting this out there.

    For the BLOOD ON THE TRACKS version Dylan had been playing "Tangled Up in Blue" in G when one of the session men recommended raising the key to push the energy a notch. Dylan agreed and rather than use a capo, just played the song in A -- without hesitation or mistake. (Everybody else just used a capo.) Dylan says he continued to work on the song for years after recording it and the final version is the one from REAL LIVE.

    • @parttimeposter1998
      @parttimeposter1998 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe he was actually playing it in Open D originally. There’s a story of how Dylan played all of the songs on the album in the key of D (in open D tuning) to Mike Bloomfield. Bloomfield later recalled how all of the songs sounded the same and how it was one of the weirdest experiences of his life. Dylan, however, did use open D on several tracks on the album: songs like “Simple Twist of Fate”, “Idiot Wind”, “You’re Going to Make Me Lonesome When You Go”’, and others.
      On the New York Session Dylan plays “Tangled Up in Blue” in the original open D. While still beautiful, it doesn’t sound as lively as the definitive version we all love.

    Complicated man. Toured with Merle Haggard and Merle said he didn't say two words to him the whole trip. Finally, Bob asked "so, what do you think?" Merle said "get out there and the famous songs people came to hear! Not that piano crap you're playing." Merle was old school, he tried to please the audience each night. To make sure he had an audience the next night. Bob is an artistic genius who won the Noble Prize. Merle was a country legend with humble beginnings.

As an Indianapolis resident I hated to see the Colts lose but losing to the Bills is a lot easier to digest than a loss to the Patriots. I'm hoping Colts-Bills becomes a rivalry the way Colts-Pats once was but with a few more Colts victories!

    Great lesson and highlighting such a brilliant version of a brilliant song. I remember seeing that footage shown in the mid-late 70s on L.A. TV when I was a kid and being mesmerized. It was one of the first things I taught myself on guitar. Looking back, the themes and adult relationships were probably formative, too. When I looked at it today, though, it was the first time I wondered whether that was actually white makeup or somebody sneezed over the mirror?

    That must be the Buffalo Blue, but if they lose, then, my friend, you might really be in the Blues!!!! Maybe some new verses? I was wandering onto a football field in January, hoping for victory. But Baltimore was in the way, hoping for the Super Bowl, on that January day, Tangled up in Blue. Buffalo, in the old rust belt, trying to be reborn, cold and snow and summer dreams, will I ever know another way as I wander up the highway. Rochester, Niagara Falls, Owesgo and the Great Lakes, tangled up in blues. Football was a game I played, in my younger days, but I grew older, just to play guitar, but she never escaped my mind, tangled up in blues ! I married a beautiful wife, she let me buy guitars. Now you watch my videos, making me a star. Just call me James James, known by another name. Some knew me as Privet-tricker, but that was another time. Tangled up in Blue. Now I got a dog and so many guitars. Many fans know me well, but I don’t care about fame. I got a wonderful wife, dog and 20 guitars. Call me happy, call me content, my journey has been good, just know me as I play guitar. Tangled up in Blue.

    Small aside before the meat of the comment: Did you monetize? I got a short ad, for once. No problems with that, just wondering.
    I was taught this as G with a sus4 hammer-on the C on the b string. Or G11, whatever. I like your take better. I just can’t do that thumb over thing with F, even though my hands are larger than many.
    Also, my read is: G to F to C would indicate that that part is in C and the progression is V chord, IV chord, I chord. It then modulates to G with the D and E minor to C. i.e. I to V to vi to IV.

      Bob Dylan is one of those songwriters who make you realize why it's called Music Theory and not Music Law. Physics has Laws, music has Theory, and to quote Scotty from Star Trek 'Ya cannae change the laws of physics captain', but it's o.k. to wander off the straight and narrow of theories, especially music. If it sounds good don't lose sleep trying to work out why it does even though you can't explain it in line with music theory. In the key of G the F Major could be a sub-dominant shift of the C Major which turns up eventually, but it might just be that way because Bob Dylan liked it that way.
