  • How to diagnose and fix no power to blower motor and wiper motor on a 1980 MK1 Volkswagen Rabbit due to load reduction relay damage. This also applies to Jetta & Caddy models. Reports of the same problem with the MK2 models are common.
    This is my 1980 VW Rabbit. It's a 1.5L Naturally aspirated Diesel. It's all original and driven daily.

    This totally solved my problem (well, one of them anyway)! Thanks Chris. I never knew what the "Load Reduction Relay" actually did.

    Thank you sir, this confirmed my conclosion reading through the 44 page electrecal schemetics for my -96 golf... changed the relay labelerd "18" and the wipers and blower now works fine.Thank you!!!
    Also opened up the old one(as i did the better one) and the old had dirty and burnt pionts./ cleaned them up and put back in the spare parrts drawer.

    Thanks man. Just got a new old MK1 where those fuses were dead. I was reading the Bentley and it had no mention of this in the trouble shooting. I switched it with one from a parts car and I now have wipers. Sadly the blower motor is dead but this helped me immensely to figure out how to get power to the fuse box... Thanks for the tip!

    The 1977 onward B1 Passats (Dashers) use the same fusebox. My Passat has this issue. Thanks for the video!

    Good information to know Chris thinks for the video...I been hearing about that problem for some time now but so far so good with my 84 rabbit...glad to see you still like your rabbit I love hearing all the updates with it

    I had a '79 Rabbit (gas, not diesel). Rabbits had a known flaw, and it had nothing to do with relays. The radio antenna lead-in wire was right above the fuse box, and the grommet leaked, shorting out the fuse box. I lost the electric fuel pump and electric cooling fan on mine

    Question for you, I also have a rabbit and like yours, have some empty slots near the relays. What are they for and should they be empty?

    My wipermotor is making some "Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" noise... sounds like servo but it couldnt move. So, the wipermotor doesnt move at all and all relays are good, connection on wipermotor isnt bad and everything else is fine. What would i do?

    My family had an '84 Diesel bought new that August. I had the same issue with the wipers. It sat out in the rain one weekend in 1996 and the wipers completely failed, probably due to the relay. I think water leaked into the fuse block area. I had to drive home about 115 miles in heavy rain with no wipers. I'm sorry to say, but I hated that car, at least at the time. I wish I'd known about Rain-X!

      Lucas Barzee the part number?

      My blower motor only works on high, u said the blower & wiper relay is 10 & 11, what # is the blower relay so I can replace it & have low & medium?

    • @thisandthatwithchris1984
      @thisandthatwithchris1984  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lucas Barzee no I said fuse 10 and 11 not relay. however it's easy to find out what relay runs blower simply put blower on low or medium and pull relays one at a time till blower stop. or Google search for a diagram that labels the relays. but if It only malfunctions on high it's likely the resistor not the relay.

    Wipermotor is getting power and it just makes sparkle when touch. 12.4v is highest it can get. Can help? (Wiper motor doesnt move)

    • @thisandthatwithchris1984
      @thisandthatwithchris1984  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes if you have 12v to the motor and it still will not move. Replace the wiper motor.

      @@thisandthatwithchris1984 I did and it doesnt still work ... I am trying to find a wiper motor electrical diagram and all ... What could be the serial number of the relay you have or the number that shows always in your relay.

      @@nohomo1506 Wow things are getting tricky..... is there 12v power all the time or just when wiper switch is on?

      @@thisandthatwithchris1984 Yes there is. I am thinking that i need to wire it again. But then i dont need a relay and when i stop it it will stop right there

    Your relay failed because of water damage, I'm sure you have damaged fuse box also.. Or at least in time you will have.
    I would highly recommend that you take the fuse box apart (take notes as you will need it to put it back together)

      I assume the same with fuse box, Somday I hope to investigate it. Thanks for watching!
