      Thanks! It's going to be a fun reading month - hopefully it'll be more reading this month than in previous months :p

    I'm taking it easy this summer - no set TBRs, not readathons, just enjoying some beach reads, thrillers and a few cozy mysteries.

      That's great - a chill summer reading what you want at your own pace is a great way to enjoy the beautiful weather. Happy reading :)

    Yes, I (and a friend!) had an "author tea" with Amy Stewart! She was a delightful person--not only is she an author, she is also an artist and I think that carries through into her non-fiction writing.

      Hah, I thought I remembered something to that degree. I like that I know someone who knows the author. Maybe one day I can be the one that knows the author :)

    Nice bunch of books! I’m most looking forward to hearing about the “nifty” shenanigans of the earthworms and the unicorn horn testing 😂.
    I’m behind in all my reading too; summer is a busy time of year for us as well and the pull to be outside doing things is often outweighing the desire sit down and read for me. :) Hope you enjoy what you end up getting to this month!

    • @ReadbyFred

      Yup, it seems like the summer has been filled with outdoor activities. My wife and I were out all day yesterday, then I get home and cut the lawn and by the time it's all done it's 8pm. Ah well, I'm very happy it's summer though :)

    A very interesting selection of books! "Poisoning of Puppies"- that would make my wife real mad! 😂 I used to be a Field Guide in South Africa, and you very quickly learn the importance of smaller creatures and the balance of ecosystems. Read up about the Dung Beetle, I think you will be interested. Happy Reading Fred!

    I was already thinking you always have the most interesting selections, and then you pull out the earthworm book! I'm really looking forward to hearing about that one! Genome as well. That's a book I haven't read because a lot of people said it was outdated, but if you say it's worth a read, I'll take your word and read it.

    • @ReadbyFred
      @ReadbyFred  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A lot more has been better understood since Ridley wrote the book, but I've heard people talk about how well written the book is. Even if it's outdated (which I guess I'll find out), I'm looking forward to reading it.

      That's great to hear. I'm looking forward to it because 1 - it's a nonfiction science related book, and 2 - Melinda knows the author (it sounds weird, but knowing this makes me feel good about the book :) ).

    I added The Earth Moved to my TBR.
    I am taking part in the first 2. Earlier today, I saw a video about the 3rd. It appears that it would require me to read more books for it than I want to do.
    I am currently reading several books. One is the Crown Games of Ancient Greece by David Lunt. Although I am not reading it for Historathon, it would be a good book for it.

      It's sometimes tough isn't it? So many reading events that we want to participate in, but where to find the time and the books can become stressful. I try to remember to just enjoy myself here on booktube and go at my own pace :)

    "I'm NOT telling my wife about that" something no one has ever said before 🤣

    I'll be co-hosting Garbaugust and returning to booktube some time in july!

      Thanks Celeste. Hah, yeah no, my wife would not approve of The Royal Society book if she knew puppies were harmed (neither would I - I'm hoping it's just "clickbait" in the book synopsis). Every August I want to read Valley of the Dolls for GarbAugust, and there’s always a long line of holds for it at my library.
    Thinking I’d get ahead of the curve this year and put it on hold in June, I went and still in all my libraries they have months long wait! Argggggghhhhh! Why are so many people still reading this book!

    • @ReadbyFred

    science reading is challenging in more than one way… things can and do change rapidly, and at times quite dramatically… in a way that you don’t see to the same extent in fields such as history. I’m pretty sure that there are things in my nursing textbooks from the early 2000’s that are outdated now. I know for sure that best practice for CPR has changed since I first learned it around 2003. To a certain extent, I think there is a benefit to a scientist having an interest in history… it can be useful to know the past science that current science is to be built upon, either to help direct the course of current study or to avoid reinventing the wheel.
    I enjoy reading a certain level of science, but that genetics book looks like a heavy read. My (metaphorical) hat’s off to you. 🫡

    • @ReadbyFred
      @ReadbyFred  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      ".. it can be useful to know the past science that current science is to be built upon" Absolutely agree. By knowing our past we can (hopefully) avoid the pitfalls/dead ends they encountered. Insightful comment, thank you for this :)
