This track reminded me why I started improvising. It's been a little while since I've jammed but this made me come up with one of the craziest solos by far the lead up and breakdowns of the backing track are awesome!! Well done!!!
I always have fun trying to experiment with people’s suggestions for looking at something from somewhere other than the most direct path. I don’t personally find this to work very well for my taste, because B Aeolian has a C# in it that doesn’t really play well with what’s happening here, harmonically speaking. If this were an Em7 to A7 jam, for instance, then this works better, but then I would also say that you’re better off playing looking at it through the lens of E Dorian, as pedestrian as that may be. Also, I’m not exactly sure what you mean by B Aeolian being the 4th position of E, though I assume you’re talking about a position on the neck rather than anything having to do with harmony, because B Aeolian is not derived from E minor, nor its relative major, G. It comes from the key of D, the sixth mode and relative minor of D major is B Aeolian, and the natural minor scale. Good fun trying it out though!
@@TheAdultInTheRoom74 im not suggesting you play anything other than E aeolian, all I meant was instead of centering your mind on first position 12th fret blues/Aeolian. center or sort of pretend that the 'key' center is the 4th position blues. Pretend that is first postion and 'home'. Still play E Aeolian but because you are playing from a different 'center' in you rmind, it creates different feels and more tension. Often you can play your stock first postion licks, but when playing them in or near the 4th position, they come across with more character....this extends across the fretboard of course. am not suggesting one just play only from the 7th to 10th frets. only suggesting one act as if that is home base.
another way to express the idea is that when you pretend 4th pos is first, it's the same as thinking the 5th of the scale is the 'root', as one would naturally do if playing along to the tune(s) in 4th pos, as if it where first. Or same as thinking you are playing in B phrygian/ which is same as E aeolian. It's the mental thought that B Phrygian is 'home', (rather than Eaoelian) that is the point....Create all the subtle tensions and then go up to 'proper' first pos (12 fret) to resolve any line you wish and then drop back into the 4th pos thinking for most of the improv. It works with many/most tunes because of the nature of the first vs 4th position being similar in pattern across the neck, and this naturally allows for standard postion licks to work but adds character. And of course one can still add in a dorian note here or there or do whatever one prefers. But it's the thinking of 4th position blues(or Bphrygian) as homebase, that is the key to the idea
As a recorder player, this is awesome.
