Wow! That $129 Bass sounds Absolutely Fantastic to me, Much better than some "other" Basses in or around that price point. Thanks; once again, Great comparison/review.👊🏿
@@dexterj5615 Yep - the same with modern versus vintage electronics (pedals or synths). For instance, the original Arbiter Fuzz Face can sell over £4000, but has about £10 worth of actual components in it.
Not that I need another bass but yes, I agree that $5k bass sounds amazing. Love this analysis, but for the price of under $200 the yellow bass is a pretty good deal.
I gotta be that guy this time... I genuinely don't believe a Fender should represent the expensive instrument category. Fenders all sound similar, from the classic vibe range to the custom shop. You're just paying for the quality of build, it has no extra features. A true fancy bass would be a Sandberg or a Dingwall
As an intermediate I always thought sound was what mattered most, as an upper advanced player now, I understand that the feel is absolutely the number 1 concern. Got myself a Sire u5, sounds fantastic but definitely not my personal favourite tone palette, yet it feels perfect, and that's it, I use it all the time for everything.
Never thought I would see Cici with a Fender in her hands! And it didn't last long! The ash tray usually comes with foam dampeners. Also they moved the thumb rest to the top. The hardware looks good but totally impracticle.
For £129 that is excellent quality - as a beginner Bass that is amazing, of course it lacks a little depth and Bass but what else would you expect. The £5,000 Fender Jazz is a diferent beast, I bet it wouldn't beat a £1,000 Fender Jazz by much except for feel to be honest.
Cici based on what you just described there's a chance you'd love the Nate Mendel signature Fender P-Bass. It got a Jazz Bass like neck and are super comfortable to play. And it sound wicked with its Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups.
I play Fender basses with covers regularly without any problems, but I can see why they don't suit some players. The CS bass in this video is gorgeous!
You guys are a great dynamic duo! I think I would go with Cici’s bass as I’m a Precision Bass shape fan but that if money was no option the Jazz would look awesome with just the ashtray left on.
This is the best Andertons bass video for a while, loved it; and that East Coast bass is wow! So much value for what came across as an excellent piece of equipment, it sounded great on headphones on my end.
Fascinating video. I wonder if that's the first time an EastCoast bass has been played through a GK amp? Shows that the rest of the signal chain is at least as important as the thing with the strings. Have to admit, I can't imagine wanting that Fender, but the most impressive thing about it was how responsive it was to Cici (and Lee, for that matter) changing her approach to playing it.
I'm an amateur musician, bars and parties- nothing special, trust me- but recently the band I'm in has had issues finding and keeping a good drummer and bassist. You guys don't get the credit you deserve. You sit in the background making everything possible- where you go the rest of the band follows- you're everything, the real heart of any band. All the best bands in history had exceedingly good bassist and drummers- Zeplin, Tool, Perfect Circle, Puscifer, Floyd, Rush, etc., etc. - the list is endless, if I missed your favorite band- sorry. I've played guitar for over 35 years now, and I teach beginner guitar at a local shop- every guitarist starts for the same reason- to get laid. Oh stop it- you know that's why you picked it up- that's not why you kept playing- but you picked it up because you wanted to be in the spotlight, you wanted attention- to get laid. Then you fooled around and fell in love- huh- get it? Dad jokes, sorry. But bassist don't start for that reason- no one picks up the bass thinking they're going to get laid. They do it because they love music, they love to express them self- from the start. Hats off to bassist and drummers everywhere- you guys rock.
Are there East Coast Dealers in the USA, wants me that yellow bass . . .just buying it for the painted body, then build it up to Fender levels is saving on a respray -
That brand is -- if I am not mistaken -- one of Andertons' own so probably not? Btw, Markbass does a rather similar looking bass but with just the P pup.
It was fun to see the reactions to even holding the CS bass and to see it doing what the creators probably never imagined it doing with the heavy fuzz :) Doing one of those challenges like Lee and Pete do where you would both pick a very budget rig and then compete to play/create with them would be fun.
Yeah same. Always thought about getting a guitar, but ended up with a bass. It's fun just grooving along on the root notes. And these days, even the cheap ones sound and play good. Get one! :)
It’s easy to understand what Cici says about preferring the precision bass herself. Amazing though it may seem, there appears to have been a growing trend dating back to the end of the 90s (if not longer) of Jazz and fusion Musician’s gravitating away from the Jazz bass and toward the P bass. Even though I bought an active jazz base myself in June 2000, hearing demonstrations of the PJ model since then have led me to feeling a trace of buyers remorse as of 2024. Not that I’m going to turn loose of that bass, but I kind of feel some temptation to that end of late. I would probably have preferred getting a model like this Eastcoast model instead.
Many people love the flexibility of the PJ pickup layout and there is good reason for it, even if it is not to everyone's taste. The biggest weakness of the East Coast is that the individual components are chosen with cost effectiveness in mind. Upgrading the pickups should make a big difference to the sound just as getting the frets dressed should make it more easily playable. The quality of the tuners is another area low cost basses and guitars tend to suffer. Many would say that upgrading all these things is not cost effective as you would probably spend more than the purchase cost of the bass to do so although personally, I think these lower cost instruments are a great introduction for people on a budget and upgrading them as and when you get some money can turn them into something that reflects the player rather than just another 'model x instrument' and if you make a mistake upgrading something like this, you haven't exactly lost much.
With the price factored in, I'd go with the cheap one, I want something that won't give me a heart attack when I inevitably knock it off its stand. Money no object? Still the cheaper one, I like the modern sound, and the P pickup. Like ye say, it is totally personal preference... the right bass for you is the bass that you like! You could probably replicate the fender for cheaper, but it still wouldn't be the fender, it wouldn't have the same wabi sabi, or essence
There was never a Pre-CBS Jazz Bass with a gold anodized pickguard. Plus, when will the Fender Custom Shop get the outline of the JB body right? If you compare the upper cut-away/horn to American Vintage/AO/AVII or actual Pre-CBS JBs you'll see the difference (!).
You guys can play :o) !!!!!! ... That East Coast bass is AMAZING ..... and for the price even more so ! Love the look of the Fender, just some of the older / relic ones seem a bit too quiet IMHO
Where are all the custom shop p basses? It seems like there’s loads of jazz basses out there but CS Precisions are a bit thin on the ground. What gives?
I can hear the difference on my phone. And everyone knows it’s not equal difference ratio to price ratio. In fact Andertons have regularly mentioned this. But there is a big tone difference in favour of the Fender. The harder comparison is between a Mexican and USA custom. But by that point it isn’t a tone difference you’re buying.
The Fender has far greater depth of tone whereas the Eastcoast is lacking in the bottom end. It sounds very high mids focussed to me which but for the price it would be churlish to complain too much.
Well. A P bass has a big neck. I'll let you try my Kiesel 6 string and see what a big neck actually is. I'm not sure why someone would pay £5000 for a Fender that isn't actually old. And let's be honest doesn't sound any better rhan a £1000 Fender. For that you can get a 100% custom made bass with money left over for a new amp or pedal board.
Wow! That $129 Bass sounds Absolutely Fantastic to me, Much better than some "other" Basses in or around that price point. Thanks; once again, Great comparison/review.👊🏿
