    My goodness, I've probably listened to this quintet a thousand times over but Tony Williams is absolutely devastating as a drummer.. And just when you may think he has only one style -- kinetic -- he reminds you that his skill set covers the entire dynamic range. He was just as profound with his touch on the ballads as he was on the firecrackers.
    What an incredible group they were and what otherworldly synergy they had.

    Thanks. These men, especially the less than world-famous ones, don't get nearly the respect they deserve. 95% of them never made enough money to feed their families from music alone. The Miles', Herbie's, Wayne's and Carter's of the world are rare.
    At least many of them are now receiving the praise they deserved then.

    Forget about it. The greatest music in the history of mankind. This is the pinnacle of spontaneous human artistic achievement. And yes, Tony stands out. I'd argue he's the most prodigiously talented musician of the past 100 years.

    I believe that this performance is from later in the 60s. Wayne Shorter didn't join Miles band until 1964 and the tune is Agitation from the album "ESP" recorded in 1965. Possibly from a concert in Stockholm Oct. 31, 1967

    • @superga5
      @superga5 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      indeed. guess Miles first full concert recorded on camera is Milan 11 Oct 1964

  • @jameskoetting6608
    @jameskoetting6608 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The song is "Agitation", and is on the CD "E.S.P.", which was originally recorded on Columbia in January 1965. So the '63 date is almost certainly wrong - also because Shorter didn't join until '65. In his liner notes, Bill Belden sez this was the quintet's signature opener until '69. Incredible performance.

    There is a great Columbia collection of Davis from this period (about 61 to 64) with mostly live tracks. It has the silly name, "Miles Davis Greatest Hits." Tracks include 7 Steps, All Blues, Someday My Prince, Walkin, My Funny V, ESP, Round Midnight, So What. Has Coltrane, Hancock, Carter & Williams, Shorter, et al. Really Great!

    I love the way these guys redefined the jazz quintet so that after 45 years, no real innovation has really happened since. Those albums, like Miles Smiles, are still amazingly fresh sounding. Herbie's comp licks at 2:00 AND 3:00 give me chills!

    Et dire que j'y étais ! après être descendu de Genève à 2 en Vespa, avec la tente canadienne, crevés.le 1er soir juste le temps d'arriver, le second, sacrilège, e suis endormis quelques minutes !! Mais que ce fût beau, et dire que tony à moins de 17 ans, plus jeune que moi,lui se tapais les tournées.Après nous avons vu Miles sur une terrasse en bord de mer avec une belle blonde. Existe une photo connue des ces moments. Merci d'avoir pu vivre tout ca. Merci Google pour ce revival.

    I think I've made some of these Miles Quintet ytbs faves more than once. I don't care. Everytime I see/hear them, I'm so filled with awe and warmth. That line-up was some kind of magic. But it's also that they were some of the best and ballsiest of that time. They seem telepathic at times 'cause there so in the zone. I'll take 2 of what they had.

    This group was the first high-profile major label jazz ensemble to embrace some, but certainly not all, of the freer elements that had been introduced to jazz in the few years previous to this music. If one had been raised on bop and blues and rhythm changes, these open forms, free chromaticism and lick-free zones had a lot of appeal. This group did not rehearse, as they wanted their group playing to be of the moment. This aesthetic is now the dominant one is jazz. Find more of their music.MBB

    Don't get me wrong Dorkradio, I love Miles Davis. What he did for not only music but for society is profoundly overlooked. A man of true freedom in a place where we are ALL slaves. So before you go running your mouth off with no means other than to make yourself feel good, take a closer look. I meant to give a little more insight to those who might not know much about him.

    It says at the top 'Stockholm 1963' but Wayne didn't even join the band until 1964?? Wrong date. Still, great video. My favourite band.
    Great to see that Wayne with his current band keeps this quintet's spirit of exploration and adventure - where anybody can contribute all or nothing at any time -alive and well. My favourite type of Jazz.
