      Ewa, animating those phone cord strands was too big of a flex. We get it, you follow through on things. GOSH

    It's so useful to hear your thoughts on these. I'd love more portfolio reviews! If you could, maybe ask for the source files? If you went into the projects yourself and found the angles you'd like, show us what you'd screenshot, that would be incredibly useful

    This video is so good that the first 4 minutes could be a separate inisightful guideline and it would still be great. Thanks for your work and the artists for contribution!

    Regarding following concepts and adding your own spin on it (mentioned at around 5:00):
    I've been following Andrew Hodgson for a little while, for those who don't know who he is, he's an industry veteran Hardsurface Modeler. In his portfolio reviews he mentions how it's very important to translate as much of the concept art to the final model as possible. Ultimately it depends on where you want to go with your portfolios, but personal interpretations to the concept are not always appreciated.

    • @Erindale
      @Erindale  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends very much on the studio and the hiring manager. For me, I want to know that my artists can make decisions as a lot / most concept art doesn't hold to 3D structural requirements. For bigger studios and AAA settings I imagine they're going to just want pens-for-hire more than individual artists so that's likely where Andrew is coming from with his background.

    Thanks for this video, it's good information. I do a variety of different work, and it's very difficult to convey in a portfolio. Your advice on curation is helpful. I once sent a client a list of links to TH-cam videos I made. Of course, they apparently did not watch all of them. They clicked on a 2D animated commercial I made. They then made assumptions just based on that, that I wasn't a good fit for their needs, which were medical illustration animations, which I have done, but they did not look at those, so it's important to curate for specific positions and not include other things, no matter how proud you are of them, no matter how good they are. It doesn't matter how vast and varied your experience is, if the first thing they look at doesn't seem to fit their needs, they will skip over everything else.

    • @Erindale
      @Erindale  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it's just the unfortunate state of the world. Hiring managers at big studios can have 1000+ applicants per role advertised so it's important to give them exactly what they want

  • @GaryParris
    @GaryParris ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There can be artists who use a body of work that is constant that is their portfolio such as Beeple and many Visual Artists, a portfolio for Jobs may be one that is curated for work purposes is not the same as an artistic portfolio of ongoing art projects, these are not the same in reduction, but in general for digital artists looking to work in the space of design, games, film and some other spaces then of course it can be viewed and used in that way, but not for fine arts or other types of visual arts

    • @Erindale
      @Erindale  ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose I should've qualified this as "portfolios for gainful employment". For those who are more just looking for commissions, social media algorithms favour constant activity over quality of individual pieces. That being said, if you're a fine art student and you need to produce a portfolio for university admission then that's going to need to be a curated portfolio again.

    Coming from web dev, I was actually shocked that the text as an image was praised

    • @Erindale
      @Erindale  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s just because artstation is garbage for portfolio presentation so doing it in an image is the only way to keep things in line and compelling as you read down the page 🥹 I definitely wouldn’t want to see it on a personal website where you can actually control formatting
