I think Sidious did fear Yoda. He didn't live in fear of Yoda, but feared actively confronting him because he knew it would be risky to do so, because Yoda could and likely would destroy him. Sure, Sidious MIGHT win, but he couldn't predict that and via a risk/reward calculation, it wasn't worth the risk. Especially considering that Sidious knew he already won, so why risk the hard-fought victory?

Sidious was running as vocalize by Yoda. The reason was simple... he wanted to survive.
    1) Sidious as stated by Lucas himself, just lost a dual with Mace. Mace proved superior. Yoda had 800 years more experience than Mace. It would be foolish to challenge that.
    2) Yoda just took the full force of his Sith lightning and brushed it off.
    3) Yoda knocked him across the room while his defense was up.
    4) Sidious had an entire Legend of Clones in the building if he could escape to them.
It wasn't a tactical retreat... it was a smart attempt at escape. He was buying time to get reinforcement.
It is the same reason he never sought out Yoda nor allows Vader to do so. Yoda is too dangerous.

Yoda on the other hand, had a taste of Sidious' and still wanted to brawl. Powerful as he was, inherently Sidious was a coward. Evil usually is cowardly. One strength and weakness of each is how the force is used. A sith isn't confined by rules - they can be as destructive as they want to be. They can even use human shields and the threat of harm to innocents and friends. Jedi cannot. Jedi have to not only consider the ramifications of destructive conflicts on their surroundings, but on other people. They are even reluctant to kill their opponents. They have to expend time, energy, and concentration on not only dueling their sith opponents, but protecting those who are being endangered by the sith. The sith can use this to their advantage, because they don't care who gets hurt or what gets destroyed (which is why they're sith in the first place). So in essence, for a jedi to be on equal terms in an engagement, by and large, they have to work harder than the sith does, and can be "blackmailed" by the sith who might be threatening innocents and friends.

  • @eds1942

    The simpler explanation is that
Palpatine (Sidious) had already won. Yoda just hadn’t realized that the Jedi had lost yet. That is why Sidious was laughing like a lunatic the whole time.
And I don’t think that he wanted Yoda died either, or even captured. He wanted him in exile, hiding like the Sith have had to endure for the past thousand years.

I'm not totaly sure about that, if we keep everything of RoS but change the outcomes of the duel to "Yoda slain Palpatine" there still a chance that at least something can be done to mitigate (a bit) the futur outcomes. And yoda absolutly wanted to at least break the dark side by pulling out the roots, and finally the said roots is in range of his lightsaber, he was going all out on this, even if the jedi was lost, at least the sith would have been slain too.

      @@itachiaurion3198 It’s kinda late to mitigate things. His people have the security footage of Jedi Master Mace Windu’s attempt to kill the Chancellor of the Republic, and soon of the Grand Master of the Order too. A couple of the points of going to the Senate chambers was to;
1 - Give Palpatine some room, lots of obstacles is a plus.
2 - Put Yoda, at a disadvantage. Way to much jumping there for someone of his age and size.
3 - General security and public broadcast camera’s.

@@eds1942 The one big big issue with that is, the republic isn't brain dead. Sith was not something they didn't new, they methodicaly erradicated the "true" sith in -6XXX BY on one of the very few genocide commited by the republic because the sith species, then the sith lord was so dangerous. I always find this new interpretation that comes in the recent years that "somehow palpatine can even let pass the fact that he his a sith lord" very suspicious at best. Yeah, maybe it could pass, but no one in their right mind in the star wars universe will choose a sith over a jedi, especially the republic. After the dust has settle without any sith lord to take the rein (in case of sidious death wich could have happen), the senate will probably find evidence oh trahison from palpatine and some pro jedi one can still make the difference, bail organa to name the most well know. But it's far to long to debate about that on a text and on a media like youtube.
I would also argue that jumping is more Yoda forte than sidious, they are both old but Yoda as exceptionnal physical condition, watch any of his ligthsaber wrestling against dooku or sidious, they can't overpower his "tiny" arms. He always jump to match his ennemy and probably have an easier time launching himself in the air with less mass. -Attacks with dark alignment caused widespread damage to the environment, and blew away vehicles with ease.

I don't think that it didn't matter to Sidious if he died or not. Sidious is a Sith Lord who wants the Sith to reign, but he is also the most egocentric, self-promoting and arrogant character we know. So it's clear to me that after all these plans and actions that led to this moment, where the Sith were finally superior, HE wanted to be the one that rules over the empire and gets to enjoy this perfectly executed plan and the win over the jedi order for a long time to come, not Vader. Also he knew that the remaining jedi would not only try to kill him, but Vader also, so he couldn't be sure that if he died, Vader would survive and take over (wich pretty much turned out to be true as Vader would probably have died on Mustafar if Sidious hadn't come to help and rescue him). I think the last thing he wanted was investing all this energy and effort in his plan for all those years to finally see it all become reality and then get killed by Yoda just a few hours or days in. So I would assume he actually wanted to flee from the fight. I wonder what your sources are and where you got the information to back up this theory.

Judging from the duels in ROTS and Clone wars canon, both stalemated each other and were both masters of all lightsaber styles and had comparable force powers
So in which case the odds are about 50/50 that Sidious survives vs 100% survival if he flee’s
Even a trained fighter/martial artist is taught to run first and to only fight as a last resort. Why actively walk into danger if you don’t have to?

Best to run away and bet Vader's up close and powerful style is a better matchup against Yoda.

Yoda much like Sidious mastered all the lightsaber forms, including Juyo, which was the base for Vaapad. Yoda taught Mace the basics of Juyo to create Vaapad. Yoda just preferred Form 4 cuz it suited his body type, and immense midichlorian count. Yoda held the advantage in Blade to Blade combat simply for his experience, Sidious had more power in the Force though due to the dark side.

i am going to have to disagree. i have never seen that as a tactical retreat. i think that he realized fully that the only reason he lived through his fight with windu was because anakin showed up and helped him. if anakin never shows up in his office then he dies right there before order 66 is ever given. So after order 66 is given and the order is destroyed he knows when he sees yoda that this is it. he destroyed yoda's order, killed his fellow council members, slaughtered his jedi brothers and sisters, and did not even have the heart to spare the younglings from his wrath. he knew yoda was there to kill him and that first shot of lightning had everything sidious could put into it in it, and it barely fazed yoda. He knew if he fought him yoda would kill him most likely and that everything had been for nothing. honestly even when he ends up "beating" yoda he never actually beat him. the force from the build up from their attacks exploded and the emperor just had the good fortune of landing someone safe and yoda fell to the floor of the senate building, but in all reality had they both fallen that way sidious probably would have died right there. Honestly i don't even think that yoda retreated because he did not think he could beat him, but that he knew that had caused a lot of commotion in there fight and that most likely a 501st was already on there way to come and save sidious from yoda. if he had went back up to finish the fight he would have been killed by the clones so he went into hiding

There's a bit where a younger Palpatine was something of a thrill-seeker; especially when his life wasn't yet dedicated to the Sith grand plan, and legitimate machinations to conquer the whole galaxy, he liked life or death struggles, dangerous speeder bike, and pod-racing. I like to imagine that, when fighting Yoda, he might've felt just a little bit rejuvenated, getting into a fight that could so honestly end him. I think as much as he needed to get certain obstacles out of his path, and understood hiw important it was that he survived, at least some of him was just so elated to throw aside caution, and engage with the likes of Windu, and Yoda, thrilling in the clash, and coveting the victory over his hated enemies, nor just Because they were Jedi, bur because they actually COULD endanger him, and his scheme. I know it's different than a role-playing game, where hit points can make one seem invincible; it can take so many "hits" to deplete a character of Sidious' level, but here, it really could be one hit, and it was over, and while Palpatine certainly wanted to win, I think he actually liked, in a perverse way, the feeling of risking so much on a single fight, against one of the few beings who could make him struggle to win.

There's an explosion and likely due to Yoda's smaller size he is flung backwards off the podium and falls many feet to the ground. At that point, if memory serves me, Yoda senses a group of clones approaching so he flees knowing that fighting both Sidious and the Clone's blaster fire would probably overwhelm him. Well Sidious was the only one taking things seriously. There isn't even a reason for him to fight Yoda, since he could just call a hundred clone troopers in to shoot Yoda in the face. It isn't really cowardness but just being prudent. He didn't try to run a second time.

exactly this. people always seem to ignore that rather than retort something appropriate back Sidious merely mentions Vader. It's as if Sidious is acknowledging Yoda was stronger or better by that admission.

@@Lilitha11 First of all, it absolutely IS cowardice. Second, we saw what Yoda does to squads of troopers, he had no issue dispatching them at the Jedi Temple, he'd have no issue here except that the coward Sidious would throw his weight into the fight in a heavily stacked deck against Yoda....because Sidious is a coward like that.
