Reference Track (I See You)

  • Kind of funny… After I finished recording all of the instrument parts on this song, I decided to do a quick track of “scatting” to get a feel for the tune and rhythm this song called for. I just did random words, with the term “reference track” thrown in often. I still had no clue until that “ah-ha” moment - I’d do a song about reference tracks, but then relate it to life! OK, the working title was “I See You”, and I did sing that line, so that stayed as the chorus (post chorus?).
Funny (ironic?), when I wrote the song, which was maybe two hours of working out the words to the music, I deleted that “scat” track and just sang with no reference track at all. This was both good and bad - I think I did a pretty good job of getting the feel for the rhythm, but a bad job of hitting right notes - I didn’t even sit down and play it on a keyboard, so the tune was almost improvised on the spot. OK, I did use a reference track when I started the instrumental part, just not the vocals.
Technical stuff - There was my voice, a bit of Viscount digital piano (it is 20 years old and one channel doesn’t work…), a lot of Prophet Rev 2, quite a bit of Synclavier Regen and a tambourine.
This was supposed to be for fun, so I hope you had fun listening.

Great track. It does have almost a "Kurt Weill kind of vibe" in the first half

Thanks. I wasn't thinking Kurt Weill, but I know where you're coming from.

It is fun. I really liked the spontaneous vibe. Good job Trent! The Regen sounds good too.

Thanks! After about 5 songs with the Regen alone (or with my voice), this is the second time I've played around with mixing it with the Prophet Rev 2. The two really complement each other very well.

@@trentpmcd You are right. They do sound good together. The Regen is so powerful. It can do so many things. I have to admit I envy you. Your choice was outstanding.

@@davidryle The Regen is super flexible - I'm still just doing additive and FM, and haven't even though of playing with samples yet. Even with additive/FM, there is so, so much I haven't touched... I had to finagle a lot of stuff in my life to afford it then, but it was well worth it - I was so super stressed over so many things and the Zen of playing with sounds one harmonic at a time was exactly what I needed.

I really like the link between love and music here. I use the word love in any of its forms. Really like the chorus and what, in my laypersons's terminology is the bridge.

Thanks, Lisa! There is a short section that might seem a little "brighter" than most of the song which I call the bridge.

The lyrics are quirky, and the tune is fun. I do seem to sense they are a bit off beat with each other at times. Not that it's a bad thing. It adds to the fun of the piece.

Thanks, Annette. There are a lot of purposeful syncopation with the lyrics. There are also a few places where I am accidentally slightly off (the big one is the final "I see you" in each chorus - I am a little over a beat early...). Hope it does add to the fun :)
