Jonathan and his team have now done two of our homebuilt airplanes. The first (five years ago) still looks as good as the day it left Gadsden. The other (two months ago) is an order of magnitude better than the first. I didn’t think it was possible, but the Evoke team just keeps getting better and better. The novelty of seeing the plane(s) just never wears off. Frankly, that feeling is priceless.
I stopped into the museum a few weeks ago and had the chance to lay eyes on this plane. The video does not do it justice! Spectacular almost sums it up!
All I can say is WOW! Those two airplanes are just drop dead gorgeous! Jonathan at Evoke is such a class act and a model for small businessmen in any field of work. I spent 4 days at Oshkosh this year recording 8 hours/day, I could kick myself for not stopping by to get a look at C-FCGA in person.
Wow! Those planes definitely do not look like homebuilts. They are gorgeous! The sound is amazing! Looks and sounds like a professional aerobatic plane.
I know for sure to get a great rattle can paint job like that takes a Lots-o-Work ! ......and that job looks fantastic ! Perfect color ! NICE LOOKING PLANE !😁
Pricey yes - but, easier to appreciate when seeing all the work involved.... impressive outfit and facility. As I think I commented soon after the paint job - amazing! That is one beautiful plane Steve.
I have begged Johnathan to paint my rare Aerobatic Bonanza but won't touch anymore certified airplanes. RV's and they're sheet metal (flush rivets) are way better to paint than a plane with a bunch of rivets sticking up. This video certainly shows his quality, absolutely beautiful airplanes, congratulations!
Steve, I agree, I Saw your Plane and inspected the paint job at OSH, WOW ! it's like they poured Glass over the plane, it is GORGEOUS ! That AT-6 Yellow is my favorite color !!
I've been so excited to see this episode come out! The shade of yellow and the accents make it one of my favourite GA planes around. Great job Steve and Evoke!
Evoke has established itself as one of the very best aircraft paint shops in the country, if not the world. Jonathan's enthusiasm is contagious; it's good to love your work especially something as demanding as show quality paint. I wondered if you had any paint codes from the CAM fleet, but bringing swatches home was even better. I'll never forget the first official big reveal at Windsor just before OSH... and how I almost scooped you on the OSH reveal! That was very cool "taxi flight" in the Piper M600. And I'd forgotten that Jason Seavolt's RV-8 was at Evoke at the same time as the RV-14; always a good surprise to see a friend's airplane in a video. I promise not to look for the flaws the next time I see the airplane. My airplane wasn't quite finished (they never are) when I sold it, but I still take pride in the paint job I did on it. Flawed? Yes. Many. You better believe it. But I managed to create the paint scheme I'd dreamed of for decades without resorting to any decals, and that will always feel pretty cool. And in a few more months I'll have an accurate model of it, including the cockpit. Stay Tuned!
Hey Steve just caught this video right after it went live! Wanted to say that a while back you posted a video with Elliot Seguin and it was awesome. You actually caught my late father in law in his glasair 291KT in some pretty good knife fights with Elliot at Reno, and when I saw it I got quite choked up. Thanks for everything you do, you’re the man!
This craftsmanship is stunning. Having back in1997 had a cheapo shop paint our group-owned182, we had to live with the consequences for 21 years until we could afford a decent job. After a few years the red stripes had started fading to pink and we found that the stripes were at different heights on each side of the aircraft! The difference when we had a far better company paint the aircraft was amazing - since 1997 UV resistant lacquers have appeared and the paint shop we employed in 2019 was selected because they mainly paint bizjets whose customers will accept nothing less than the best. A super paint job is not cheap but I m sure that part of its cost will be added to the value of the aircraft when you eventually resell and meanwhile, it'll look fantastic on the ramp wherever you go. .
Congrats Chops! The build has been a long and wonderful ride / flight that I've been watching since day one. I'm so glad you decided to tackle the project. I hope that I can follow in you footsteps... Maybe.... Someday.... Outstanding paint scheme and tribute man!
I used to think these $30 paint jobs were just pure evil. Now I get it. My Cheetah was painted in 2005 with the N# removed from the three colored strips (a lot of work) and it has held up extremely well after nearly 3000 hours and 19 years on it BUT for only $5200! A whole four seat airplane! We had some restoration work and ceramic coating applied a few years back for $2k. She is so pretty for a 47 year old bird. Thanks Steve.
I remember when you announced the yellow color and thought that was just awful. But I was very wrong, as that livery is really amazing... and for that matter, that paint shop is amazing. You get what you pay for!
That's awesome! Thanks for coming back to share your thoughts on that. I knew it was a risky choice, but I had faith we could pull it off with the right design and execution 👊👍
I appreciate the education about all of the prep work needed to make the paint look its best! Still... I do love a polished aluminum aircraft! There's an F-86 Sabre (NX188RL) in the Chicago area that always impresses me with its shine, and the restored B-29 Doc seems to have a few square miles of polished aluminum that gleams in the sun. It might be fun to document the steps and effort required to maintain this sort of finish.
I struggled with how to make this a single episode - it really could have been two, with the drop off and pick ups being separate - but the way TH-cam works, I knew that was a risky strategy - Glad you enjoyed it as one!
The amount of time and effort that goes into something like that is insane. Artists is a good word to describe the crafts people that make paint jobs like that come to life.
Great video, Steve. I wish Evoke did more than just experimental planes. The video feels personal with Tony and Glen making cameos. Tony is my hangar neighbour, and I met Glen when I was stuck in Windsor and he was telling me about his build.
No an Evoke job but I got to see one of similar quality recently. There is some amount of difference between the paint + decals and the fully butted paint with properly done clear coat. Especially on a bright sunny day, just having such a clean shine is unbelievable.
@@EvokeAviation If you do, can you do one for me too? I have RV-14 tastes but an RV-12 budget, so will live my RV-14 dreams vicariously through others until my kids are out of college.
With all the money that is spent on the interior of aircraft (avionics, finishings, etc..) It only makes sense to protect the exterior just as well. This will go a long way to protecting what's inside. Plus the new paint job just looks cool 😎
I was not really able to polish it well after getting the vinyl logos on it, (even working around the tail number letters was next to impossible) so it was not sustainable to keep it that way.
I love your yellow paint job, and I saw these people at Oshkosh. They really are amazing. I bet having the conversation at 4:29, when he talks about putting 320 grid sandpaper on your polish job must twinge *just* a touch. 😛
Incredible!🤩Your combination of colors is so right for the RV14 and gives it such high visibility that it's hard to imagine a better paint scheme. - Getting an aircraft painted at Evoke is now on my wish list. Pity they don't do certificated airframes anymore.
What was the final amount of work hours they put into the paint job? If it's really in the 500-600 hour range said in the video, that makes for a pretty cheap hourly rate if the final price was just $30,000. (I would have assumed AT LEAST double for such a professional job.)
Is the following correct? Alclad layer on the skin is destroyed in places by the 320-grit sanding, but this is more-or-less compensated for from a corrosion-resistance point of view by the alodining step (and the paint itself)? Great looking result on both planes!
The alclad layer is not the safest bet for protecting the airplane from corrosion for the long term. Lots of scratches and marring from the build in addition to contaminants from flying the airplane will erode the alclad layer. We sand the surface not to remove the alclad but to remove contaminants and give ourselves a mechanical scratch on the aluminum for better adhesion to the paint. After the surface is sanded we acid etch as a final step to ensure a perfectly clean surface, then apply Alodine which acts as the fresh layer of corrosion protection. Epoxy primer is applied within 48 hours after Alodine coating for best adhesion!
I'd be more inclinded to call ti "community" built, something that I'd say in some ways is even more impressive, so many hands working on one plane and getting it turning out good! ;)

Totally fair. For me it wasn't an option due to how many logos I have on the plane. They are impossible to polish around; also, the big upfront cost does tend to increase resale value, and thus it is likely to be a solid ROI.
@@FlightChops Some people have a lot more money than most of the people who build experimental aircraft.. IE An owner pulls up in his 3.5 million dollar M600. I prefer builders who do all the work themselves.
What about if they have money AND brains? (Tony is building his RV-14 alone)... And Glenn is a retired CEO that also built his RV-14 alone. The only person in this video that didn't build their plane alone is me - I don't have money or brains. 🤡
Yep, that paint job should cost even more. The value you get from Evoke is off the charts. They put in over 1000 person-hours prepping and painting my RV-10. I put in over 4000 hours building it. Im not a painter and there is no way I was going to have a 50 foot (or even 10 foot) paint job. It’s really no different than a high end car build - you want show quality paint on your show quality build and these folks deliver.
I didn't mean to alienate anyone with this video. But yeah, I put a TON of time and effort into making the aviation content, so Sponsors are required or it doesn't happen. I'm sure if you're spending that same time and energy into your job and build project, you're going to end up with an excellent RV-14.
Don't count us out completely! Our design team is well versed in helping builders with their design process and finding a suitable paint shop that meets the requirements of your project. Our design team will work with you to create a unique design, select colors, help with interior color selections, and find a paint shop (or assist if you want to paint yourself). We provide design specs and paint masks or stencils as shown to help with your paint layout and it's very affordable at a flat rate of $1600 for that service. Plus you get me as a phone a friend when you need some quick tips!
This is Justin from Evoke. Glad we could make your plane exceed your expectations for the paint job.

Epoxy primer is applied within 48 hours after Alodine coating for best adhesion!"
Gain a couple of knots for 26lbs is not a bad trade?
It ended up being just over 30 lbs gained, and the CG moved back a bit, but well worth it.
Is it 30k US or Can!?
I should have clarified that this is USD
30k is an engine or nice new set of avionics. I think I'll keep my bare metal look
Totally fair. For me it wasn't an option due to how many logos I have on the plane. They are impossible to polish around; also, the big upfront cost does tend to increase resale value, and thus it is likely to be a solid ROI.
There is no way that paint job should cost $30,000.00!
And yet there’s currently a multi year waiting list to get into that shop. 🤷
I'm sure Evoke will be just fine without my $30K for my RV-14 paint job. I won't have any sponsors, so I'll go with what I can afford.
I didn't mean to alienate anyone with this video.
But yeah, I put a TON of time and effort into making the aviation content, so Sponsors are required or it doesn't happen. I'm sure if you're spending that same time and energy into your job and build project, you're going to end up with an excellent RV-14.
