    I have found that you have to be more careful around rocks when it’s cold. The blades become more brittle, and because they spin faster and are smaller than a rotary cutter they will break more often.

    Howdy Brock. Yeah it is hard to argue with the results. I like how much finer the cuttings are with the flail mower. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts when you finish those 10 acres. Thanks for sharing! 🤠

    The issue I have with a flail mower is that you don't always want mulching. I'm fine with mulching in some circumstances, but want to be able to have a single mower that is suitable for hay (non mulching) and general cutting. Also, flail mowers generally require MORE horsepower because they're cutting the material repeatedly (thus mulching).

    Thanks for the videos, always following you man, I would like to see a flail mower doing what you did on that video that you entered to do some trails on trees that was tall than your tractor. That video was the best :)

    Any difference going clockwise? Only one side of tires smashing grass down

  • @garymeyer3294
    @garymeyer3294 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So, if those weeds were green instead of dead and brittle it sounds like the tractor would have had quite a bit of trouble handling the flail mower?

  • @frankdrahos8569

    Really nice cut Brock. When it comes to sharpening those flail hammers, do they need to be removed for grinding?

  • @russellpetrie119
    @russellpetrie119 ปีที่แล้ว

    because with flail your deep mulching the heavier under growth as apose to topping whictch only take the top off two thirds off not to heavy you got it right

    Hey Brock! Nice video. It does look like it cuts way cleaner than a rotary cutter. Wish I knew that before I bought my brush cutter. Oh well, what can you do? I notice the mirrors on your cab don't look very usable. Mine are the same. Since you have to close the doors so hard to get a good seal the mirrors don't stay put. At least they weren't very expensive. I'm tempted to take them off and put the rubber plugs in the holes.

    Great video, Brock! I'm leaning towards purchasing either a flail mower or a brush hog. I would just use it for my own chores, so that nicer finish might be a plus. It looks like the flail mower might be more maneuverable, too. I'm about halfway done with a trail that gives me access to all of my property, so maintaining that would be part of the duties required. Doing it with a handheld brush cutter would be a real pain!

      Just a couple of thoughts I figured I'd share as you make your decision between a rotary and a flail mower.
      Two years ago, I bought a new property; 21 acres total with about 7 acres cleared. Since it was the first time that the fields had been mowed (they were farmed for several years, alternating soybeans and corn, I believe), there were plenty of pretty large rocks and other unknowns to deal with like ruts, stumps and the like. I bought a cheap-ish rotary mower and it has taken a pretty rough beating. Now that the bulk of the rocks and stumps and the like have been dealt with, I may move towards a flail mower at some point.
      Flail mowers tend to cost significantly more than rotary mowers and my impression (perhaps not entirely accurate) is that they are a little less tolerant of taking a beating than a rotary mower is. The plus side of a flail mower is the improved finish of the cut (especially if you replace the hammers with a set oy Y-blades), you will be more maneuverable since the flail is closer to the back of the tractor than a rotary is, and a flail mower is less likely to send a rock firing out like a bullet the way a rotary mower can.

  • @williamfenner9915
    @williamfenner9915 ปีที่แล้ว

    Unfortunately it is not a race. You have to adjust your pace to be condition of the property. This type of mower is more like a rough finish mower.

  • @T_Humphries
    @T_Humphries ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I can't see any reason why you would want to have the mower directly behind the tractor. To me that offset ability would be one of the most attractive features to justify the purchase. It will be interesting to see the cut quality and engine load in some living grass and weeds versus that dried out stuff you were in

    • @RockhillfarmYT
      @RockhillfarmYT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed

    • @rickyricardo3551
      @rickyricardo3551 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are a few reasons like when working in tight woods or uneven/ sloped terrain , because offsets not only weigh more but also put more weight out farther behind the tractor than the other types of flail such as a side shift which weights less , will still stick out past the tire and take alot less power to to run . Those offsets eats hp , generally if you could run a 7ft flail with side shift you would probably only be able to run a 5foot offset because of the parasitic losses. Here are two manufacturer specs a 77inch flail with a 3inch cut capacity will take 35hp to spin a 5foot offset will take 45hp . Still those offsets can be really useful in certain situations like around pond banks ect .
