    Tommy is a 'power' drummer who in his own words "plays to the nose bleed section"...hence the grand exaggerated movements (this is entertainment right?). His cv speaks for itself; in his field he is one of the best. I've played drums in this genre for over 25 years (my arms are killing me!)😂 & having witnessed this guy close up I can assure you that nobody hits/works harder than Tommy Aldridge (and I've literally sat right behind the great Thomas Lang at a masterclass). This guy doesn't need triggers to be heard over the band, he's a lovely honest guy & still slamming it nearly 30 years later; I'm sad that I feel compelled to defend him amongst fellow drummers. Haters will hate I guess.😔✌🏻️

      The problem is not that he's a bad drummer, far from it, but he always seems to hit the heads full on. A little dynamics wouldn't hurt.

    WOW! Tons of comments from the IGNORANT! Tommy is a drumming legend. He was one of the first to use heavy double bass drumming in Rock.
    For the ignorant, go listen to Pat Travers live album and then come back and bash Tommy. His drumming on that album is spectacular!

      His playing on that Travers album is killer I think it's his best. They opened for Rush during that tour and I guarantee Neil was taking notes. That would have been a drummers dream concert Tommy and Neil in the same night.

    • @MGB618

      Totally agree, Tommy is a drumming legend, no one has since matched his double bass drum skill on the Live 'Go For What You Know' Pat Traver's Album. th-cam.com/video/S6jwHOl77s8/w-d-xo.html
      Also it seems Tommy is a very modest nice guy and he doesn't deserve to be put down by ignorant people.

    Well lots of interesting comments, i have played over 40 years and have worked with some great musicians, i knew tommy way back in the day with pat travers band, and seen him live several times even with ted nugent. He is an amazing drummer and always has been good to see he is still at it and has the chops. Lessons....? The best lessons is watching those you most admire and learning from them. And a not to all who are comparing some of the greats......john bonham was the first drummer to play a triplet which is a staple of all drummers today. It is not what you can and can not play it is simply how you play it and to each style that a drummer has.

    Tommy is a hard rock drummer and it does have a narrow focus but he has done this for a long time and is amazing at this type of music,Tommy developed the over the head snare drum downbeat because he played huge festivals and it added to the effect of playing in front of 60,000 + people,they could see him playing better,otherwise it would be boring and this was before large video screens we have now.

    Say what you will about Tommy, but the reality is that the dude means what he plays. At the base of it all, that's what makes a musician great. It's the reason why John Bonham was such a great drummer, regardless of the fact that he couldn't do a fraction of what Thomas Lang does.

    • @weiht6767
      @weiht6767 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Add Virgil Donati to that list!! You dont have to hate or put down someone just to prove that the other is better!
      This is a tribute, like John Norum's to Gary Moore. Is he better? Does it matter? Celebrate the music and the respect amongst musicians who put their egos aside.
      Is john bonham lousier than Carmine Appice? Since Carmine is his hero.
      Tommy is one of my favourtie drummers, but that doesn't stop me to enjoy others like Vincent Colaiuta, who I think smokes all others.

    His answer, "Take lessons. Definitely take lessons. I think I could have done a lot more if I had taken lessons."
    Done more. Sheesh. Overachiever.

    • @christschinwon
      @christschinwon 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good answer. The fact is you should be able to play to some degree on any instrument without lessons if you've chosen right. Lessons should be an advance rather than a tutorial. I always ask my drum puplils who/what they like. Some can't even answer that. My advice is never turn down a gig!

      That would be my answer too. I am 53 and self taught and have been playing over 30 years. TH-cam has shown me how far behind I am. Seriously, I am just shocked at how much there is to learn about playing the drums.Wish I could have studied way back when. But I am working on all these free drum lesson here on youtube. And let me tell you I feel reborn on the drums and have renewed enthusiasm for drumming all because I am learning new things after all these years.

    First saw Tommy with Pat Travers Band in the early 80's.. frickin killer... one of the great rock drummers of all time. He had massive showmanship and flair but he had killer groove, and great time as well as the stadium chops.

    He played on “X-Rated” by BOA. As far as I’m concerned, their best record!

    Pat Travers Band. Late 70s, early 80s. With Pat Thrall on lead and Mars Cowling on bass. And TA!!!!!!! Holy fuck! Saw them headline with some nobodys. Bunch of teenage kids we hoped would do a quick set and just get the fuck out da way. Def Leppard. OMFG. One incredible night.

    The bass drum "bounce" is missing like most who try to cover Bonham. It doesn't matter HOW it was recorded...if you're gonna play it, cop that bounce and slow the tempo down. That said. Tommy is the last vestige of a pure rock drummer left. Most of these cats do not last...TA still plays today the way he did in 1978! That is amazing.

      Jeff Porcaro Groove Yup....double hit, preferably with not sinking beater then single then double. How did he not cop that???

      Because he is not a finesse drummer. He's a 'stadium' drummer.

    inner communication and expression psychiatric most closely related to us is the music, the poetry and prose were revealed by an appreciation of the skills cultivate the imagination, that intuition, namely self-awareness in an alibi concerning the personality and the environment and all that terkadi around it, that description from the legacy of knowledge that I came from the first to enter that world still survive, although a state where I reside does not allow them to be able to accept and understand me, need an environment that can compensate my understanding of life !!
