  • Not every galaxy is a fully formed spiral or elliptical galaxy. Some are much smaller, and orbit larger galaxies as well as each other, like ghosts. Today, we will examine these ghost galaxies- the satellites of the Milky Way and Andromeda.

Not that 375K isn't a strong following, but this is one of those channels where it seems underappreciated.
Every video from SEA is good. The quality is consistent, each topic or explanation is well done and without dumbing down a thing.

I remember training on Pohakuloa Training Area on the Big Island of Hawaii. We would sit, after firing was done for the night and look up at the night sky with our night vision equipment. I was lucky enough to have a 2x power night vision scope for my rifle. I would take it off of the rifle and we would pass it around, looking at all of the planets, stars, galaxies, satellites and nebula that we could spot. It was really amazing. Even on the dark nights, where we could see 100's of stars and gas clouds with the naked eye, the night vision lit up the sky with thousands of more objects were didn't even know were there. Over 6,000 feet up, with no light pollution, it was truly an awesome sight. Like distant islands or lands on a ship just passing by, we just would talk about how fun it would be to be able to see what was out there.

Perhaps its a Trivial question, but none were described as having a Super Massive Blackhole, as ours does. I believe we know Andromeda has a SMBH, but what of these satellite galaxies? Is that a distinguishing characteristic, or is it because we simply do not know? I would think since there is less gas and dust it would be easier to see into their cores. There was a subtle hint at the interactions, that the SMBH might be the heart of a galaxy and it might be the first "taken" or ripped from its dying corpse before becoming a Ghost. I'd really like to know.

      John Willis
Dwarf galaxies are predicted to contain Intermediate BH’s. They are difficult to observe because they are not large enough to disperse enough stars and make their effects visible through the dense clusters which they are contained in.
All globular clusters are remnants of dwarf galaxies which have had most of their mass absorbed by the parent galaxy during minor merger.

Imagine a habitable planet in a satellite galaxy, and the aliens look up at night and see the entire Milky Way in their sky.

Why don't you have 3million subscribers?
This is the most amazing astronomic documentary series I've seen in a great deal of time.

All the stars in the galaxy should be given SPOOKY ghost names. Like Slenderman, or Iaintfraidno. Though you might run out before long.

I wrote a story about a civilization in the Large Magellanic cloud, and how the people saw the Milky Way as the place where the spirits come from when someone is born and where they return to when they die, it was a clearly visible kingdom of heaven, life was a prison sentence, and the world was a temporary prison.

This is a rare subject among astronomers. The small galaxies need new emphasis for study as they far outnumber the large ones.

Thanks for the amazing video on an otherwise obscure subject to the public. Learned so much from this. Just a small offer of correction: Fernão de Magalhães is the name of the Portuguese astronomer. Using another language to refer to him is misleading as to his origins. The same way my name is Ricardo in Portuguese, it doesn’t change because there is a correspondent in the UK, recognizable as Richard. Looking forward to more content from you.

    "For a primitive sentient civilization"
Here I was thinking a channel so heavily rooted in science would understand the difference between _sentience_ and _sapience._
