    You know, MIDI files are pretty important to me, everyone hates them for sounding bad, but they're a crucial part of internet history, and besides, if you have Fooplayer of anything that supports BassMidi, all you need is some soundfonts and they sound pretty decent compared to normal midi
    also, I'm a fan of how Dist guitar instrument bank sounds

    • @superrayman3
      @superrayman3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The biggest problem I have with MIDI isn't how it sounds, it's actually the process of composing a MIDI itself, especially when you can't access a certain type of instrument that isn't a default (in my case it's finding Genesis instruments so I can use them I have them I just don't know how to access them in FL so I can use them).

      the only good parts are the arrangement and the mixing. The instruments used are an awful pick and most of them mismatch. Either way, the mixing and arrangement are the same in the console version anyways so its not like this has that one thing better over the console release

      MIDI itself isn't bad at all, it can sound great with the right soundfont - it's just a shame the Windows General MIDI soundfont is terrible, this sounds a LOT better with the sounds these were sequenced for

    • @novelezra
      @novelezra 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MirrorHall_Clay Oh don't get me wrong, I adore MIDI. I grew up on PC point and click games that used MIDI constantly (Gabriel Knight 1 has one of the best MIDI soundtracks of alltime. Everytime I hear it I forget it's MIDI)
      Unfortunately MIDI is just isn't good for platforming games because it lacks the 'energy' what a lot of sound fonts have.
      Jazz Jackrabbit is the perfect example of a developer knowing that the only way to make music crunchy and punchy enough to match their 'Sonic inspired' platformer was to use tracker music.

  • @Brodoof

    OKAY. So the PC Collection was how I played S3K most of my childhood. I knew then that the back half of Sonic 3 was different, but what I didn't know is that Sky Sanctuary has a *slightly* different melody, so slight that for the following 20 years I was convinced that I had simply heard it wrong because children are stupid. I'm only just realizing now at 32 that child me was in fact not stupid and now everything I know is a lie

    • @Shadowslash1
      @Shadowslash1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Almost the same with me. The PC collection was also how I played it back in the day (I grew up a PC gamer mostly because my dad wouldn't allow consoles after my siblings didn't treat our Gameboy (original) well), but I didn't know some of the tracks were changed. When I first heard the actual tracks for Carnival Night, Ice Cap, and Launch Base, I was so confused.
      I personally liked the PC tracks better listening to the two.

    Everyone talks hot shit about these but they're not even bad. The GM arrangements are a bit stinky compared to the FM midis in the pack, but it's a a few out of a mostly decent tracks. Lava reef act 1 is inexcusable though
    Also spoiler: any time sonic and knuckles / sonic 3 music gets rearranged Jun senoue uses these tracks as the basis
    Listen to the act 2 part of the angel island mix from brawl, or flying battery from one of the Mario and sonic games. These midis will never die

      In a way, it makes sense, since the MIDIs are probably the versions from close to original release that's easiest to open up and see the sequence for on just about any hardware
      ...doesn't excuse that it's still being used though, it's not that hard to see the original sequences from the Genesis when there are all sorts of tools to do exactly that

    This sounds really good! I don’t get why people hated these songs because of the midi. I think people only disliked the prototype CNZ, LBZ and ICZ because they weren’t the original songs. People hate change and they like nostalgia so they automatically hated the songs without thinking.

    Thanks for putting this together, I rebought Sonic and Knuckles Collection (the actual cd) and was gonna try ripping the audio from it, but I was havin trouble doin so. This is the one I had when I was little, first time I heard the actual version of CNZ, ICZ, and LBZ I thought they rewrote them... only to find out that was backwards. Then I saw people acting like these were the plague of the Earth, which I get just not liking, but people were acting like it was sacrilege or something.
    I couldn't find a download for PC version, figured it was because Midi was outdated, so I appreciate you doing this and having it out for download. I'm more use to a two times loop on stage musics, but beggars can't be choosers. Now, I'll see if I can find something that can convert it Mp3 so I can add it to my iTunes playlist.
    P.S. I was one of the kids in the 90s that didn't think Sonic or Tails could get past the barrels in CNZ. I thought Knuckles was the only one who could get through since he didn't even go that way and Sonic could only go though Sonic and Knuckles (Mushroom Hill and on)

  • @nmemassive

    This soundtrack sounds amazing! I used to have this game on PC & I was introduced to the prototype tracks through this. I don't know why people diss this MIDI soundtrack. I think the MIDI treatment gives each song a extra layer of realism & atmosphere to the game experience. The MIDI expands on what the Genesis couldn't do. Sonic Origins prototype music should've drawn off of this & the first version of the prototypes for a better quality sound. Jun Senoue is a great musician but he was using the wrong tools to compose the music as well as bad instrumentation & mixing. The tracks that sound stellar on this are Angel Island Act 1 & 2 (as a person of Caribbean background, these renditions nail the tropical Caribbean sound nicely!!!!), Marble Garden Act 1 & 2, Carnival Night Act 1 & 2, Ice Cap Act 1 & 2, Launch Base Act 1 & 2, Mushroom Act 1 & 2, Fly Battery Act 1 & 2, Lava Reef Act 1 & 2, Death Egg 1 & 2, Mini-Boss, Boss, Pre-Final Boss (this sounds brilliant!), Credits. Do some tracks need some improvements? Yes, but they are not bad as people are making them out to be. Sonic Origins did drop the ball badly, when they could've easily had Tee Lopes do those prototype tracks to make those zones with the omitted Michael Jackson music pop & sound better. I am highly critical of music & I will say after listening to this that they could've remastered the whole Sonic Origins soundtrack of music to make them sound of Sonic CD quality with the rest of the games in the collection
