    You Nailed it when you said, “the prologue is one of the most underrated synths on the market”. I would guess that Korg thought they had a hit product on their hands and were downright cocky about thier design, only to see it inexplicably ignored and/or dismissed.
    I have owned around 40 synths abd samplers and I’ve sold so many. The prologue is my “to-the-grave” synth.
    The OB-6 is damn special too!

      Hit product lol hahah. Nobody liked it in Japan, it just stayed on the shelves here like every other recent KORG synth. There's a running joke here about it, that started during the Tokyo demo. Basically the KORG team were there with the other brands and it was very busy (pre-pandemic!). Roland/Yamaha had done their thing (other brands too) but there was no sign of Prologue which wasn't expected. Turned out the unit they brought had the tuning fault.They tried another but ended up having a demonstration musician who had to use another companies product instead due to the time slot. So we started calling it, Tsumari! ('in other words') because it's a synth that can be replaced by any other brand - and that will always be better than this shitbox.
      Prologue has a passible sound. So does an upturned bucket in the right hands lol. Get a musical clue. Use something else. In the synth world modularity + maximal expression is key. That's why you'll see people hyping native aftertouch on hydra (even though many of them don't know how to use it). Many times you won't need a feature. Simple works too. But if you are entering the synth world of specs and LFO's more is....well. More. That and it's really nice if it actually works haha.
      In a culture where quality and money are premium? You never buy a feature limited product when many others exist with equivalent or better features for a similar price. That just makes you an idiot. Prologue will be remembered more as a meme by Japan. But enjoy whatever you like. It was a failure =P and cost the company alot. Just ask their engineers.

      Agreed. Have a prologue 16 too. Underrated machine; If you see for example what the hybrid engine adds and for this price range... it's insane; People pay 3 or 4 times more for prophets or oberheims with less sound design options; I love those synths too; I have a REV2 as well and love it. It's just the new OBX8 e.g. is seriously overpriced and clearly trying to milk its Oberheim name without being that wow imo. Call me a whinger but the many comparisons on TH-cam with the new OBX8 vs the old OBXa, and I feel the old model still has more oomph on many sounds.... No offense...

    I have both, theyre both solid 80s tone machines. Prologue is a great synth, its very simple but it covers many synth basics very well. Ob6 is honestly miles ahead in all respects but the price reflects that. Theres some overlap in raw osc and filter but once the envelopes are in play the ob6 is a winner. Also the harmonic distribution is the key difference, you can isolate any frequency range on the ob6 and its always musical, not so on the prologue that requires knowing sweet spots. The effects on the prologue are the best ive heard on a synth.

    • @MilesAwayOfficial
      @MilesAwayOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great analysis! I agree 100% with what you said here. The sweet spot on the OB6 (and on vintage Oberheims) is just so ridiculously big, it's very hard to make it sound bad. Prologue and most other modern synths you do have to work a bit to find em. But the FX rock! Thanks for watching and check out my Custom Presets for both OB6 and Prologue :)

    Sound very similar. Interesting comparison. I have 2 MInilogue XD's slaved together for 8 voices. And honestly love them. 8 voices is fine. The digital osc gives you more timbre to work with. @@MilesAwayOfficial Disagree. You can make an OB-6 sound 80s as a musician, or you can bring your own baggage from the 80s (I know young people that don't think the OB-6 sounds like the 80s because they're born around 2005 - 2010). It's a synth from 2016, not 1986 - it's not hard to NOT sound like the 80s with an OB-6. Similarly, a Moog can be played in modern music without it sounding like it's stuck in the 1970s, unless you play it like you're making music in the 1970s.

    @RoomAtTheTopStudio 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great comparison video Miles Away. You really did a great job here. Both synths are amazing poly synths. What the Prologue can do with a minimum amount of menu diving is incredible.
    What the Sequential synths are great at and what the Prologue is great at IMO means that they are all great. It all depends on what you want to use them for and if you can accept each of their limitations?
    The voice stealing is what stopped me from getting a Prophet-6 a couple of years ago. I love how it sounds but the 6 voice limitation was disappointing because I was spoilt by the Prologue. Now that there is a Prophet 10 out I was tempted again by the latest Prophet but in these times where my music income has been affected drastically with no income from shows, the P10 is out of my reach and the Prologue does such a great job that it effectively puts out my interest in other modern poly synths.

  • @rixcom7621
    @rixcom7621 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Hey, great videos!! There is really no way to choose one synth from another when it come to analog poly synths. I've been a VCO engineer for decades and the circuitry is almost identical in all of these synths. You can basically create the same patch on most analog synths, even DCO based architecture. The filters and amps are the same way. If you know your way around an oscillator, filter and amplifier circuit, you don't need a real expensive synth to achieve the same sounds. The price difference is in all the buzzers and whistles usually and how much you want the synth to remember after creating a sound.
    That said, I am an addict anyway. I have everything under the sun including these and the rest of what Sequential, Moog, Waldorf, Roland, Behringer, Arturia, Oberheim etc have made in the past present and future pre-orders. Needless to say I still can't get enough. It's not the this vs that scenario for me, it's what genius editing the manufacturer has done to design the different sounds into the factory presets. There are an infinite amount of sounds you can get out of any similar synthesizer so even something as low priced like the Deepmind 12 or Prologue 8 voice, I can get to sound like an 8 voice Oberheim. If you get the 16 voice Prologue you get a bit more low end. Most of the newer synths have the sub oscillators to bring up the bass plus more gain on the amps. The Prophet 10 is a great synth and also has low end but may not have as much as a newer circuit design because it was designed as a reissue so the CEM chips are the same. These chips are also in the old Oberheims which may be a consideration for Sequential to reissue an OBXa. Still the output of those synths do not match the power of my Andromeda A6 or my current venture tricked out a Omega 8 Code with full options. Anyway, thanks for doing the videos, they are very informative! Cheers!

      Hey Rix, I have a question about the low end on a Prologue 16 vs the 8. I understand the LF comp makes a difference, but do you think the same thing (or really close) could be achieved with a good compressor like the EHX Black Finger and/or a crossover with bi-amp setup? Mainly for live use of course, I'm assuming DAW options like multiband comp would be able to approximate the effect of the 16's low end comp pretty well on tracks. I found an 8 for a decent deal locally, can't decide if it's worth another $600 for the 16 (cheapest I can find one for used) when my playing style/genre wouldn't benefit from the extra voices

    Nice job. I know that you’re (rightly) focused on the differences, but I have to say that when I began listening to demos of the Prologue, it immediately evoked OB-6 vibes for me. At the very least, they both sound uniquely sparkly and pleasing in those high end harmonics that make pads come to life. But with it’s beefy fundamental - not _quite_ Moog beefy but getting there - I’d pick the Prologue for basses and leads. So as an all-rounder, I’d have to give the edge to the Prologue.

    • @MilesAwayOfficial

    Hey, reg filters, i am pretty sure the low pass filter on the Prologue can sound as silky (with resonance) as on the OB-6, when you dial back the VCOs to about 70%, you had them on full 1023, right? Full volume saturates the signal at the filter inputs, do you get thst growl. This is separate from the filter drive section (which also needs to be off for silkness). In regards to low pass filter expression from warm to smooth to growl to super aggressive i'd say the Prologue has way greater range. Where the OB-6 is superior, is the state variable sweeps, the cutting bandpass and. high pass

Between the 16 voices, Multi Engine and being able to layer 2 presets as well as split, plus you didn’t even use the built in compressor, I’d get so many more types of sounds. It’s pretty much like getting 4 synths in one, 2 analog synths and 2 digital synths ...kinda sorta lol. And I’ve heard you can sequence the 2 layers separately from an external sequencer? If they come out with a Prologue xd, with expanded filter section, mod section, lfo, Fx's, digital osc and a touch keys style keybed or some sort of extended expression control, I would buy it in a second. However they have to keep the sound, no matter what creative bells and whistles they throw at a Prologue 2, it has to have the sound it has right now or no bueno.

      When you open a library set with the Prologue Librarian software, it doesn't send it to the hardware until you click 'Send' or 'Send All' under 'Programs' at the top of the software window.
      But if you open a set that isn't loaded to the hardware, you can't see which program slots are empty in the hardware. So you need to write down the empty program numbers you want to load individual programs to.
      Then open the new library. Place the programs you want to send to the prologue in the program number position you want them to be by dragging into position or copy-paste (don't save the software library, or save a new version after reordering the programs). Then select the programs you want to send to the hardware storage drive (shift click or ctrl click for multiples) and click 'SEND' under 'Programs'.
      That will send just the selected programs to the numbers they are currently in.
      Before doing any of this you should back up your existing library and save in the computer.
      Also, user oscillators, FX, are not saved in the library software!!
      Also if you remove a user oscillator, the program can't remember settings from that oscillator. So even if you put the user osc back in the synth hard drive, it will load up with default settings of the user osc. I discovered this the hard way 😐

Even the triangle has lots of buzz. This makes the OB6 sound a bit less "dimensional" in comparison to Prologue. If OB6 sounds like an open palm slap, the Prologue sounds like a fist punch. C’mon! We know how wins here easily. You can’t be call “Pro” with one LFO, just to begging with. And the cons list goes on. Not a bad synth but at the introduction priced it was a broad daylight robbery from #Korg

      I get this a lot and I respect the opinion, but remember, the OB6/Prophet 6/Prophet 5 only have 1 LFO and are considered classics. The 80s Roland synths don't have aftertouch, etc etc. Synths are sometimes greater than the sum of their features :)

      In the end prologue is mocked globally for good reason. Its a crippled joke of a synth and a waste of space in any serious studio. The features are so poor its outclassed without effort by Korgs lowest tier of 37 key instruments. Which is an embarrassment for something toted to be a flagship.
      Funny to see the 'one-more-lfo' gag after all these years now. Korg need to step up the cost/value and ditch the allergy to aftertouch which is a basic expectation at best.

    Sorry to all the people in the comments but the Korg Prologue sounds much better to my ears. I'm not saying it's a better synth but it does sound better.

      Fair ! It really sounds so good and is a criminally underrated synth. To this day I am still surprised it was such a commercial failure they discontinued it after 3 years
