  • This is one of my favorite patterns tied by John Barr. This particular pattern, as well as other classic Barr patterns can be found in his book, Barr's Flies. The bouface is tied to mimic a leech and can be tied in many different color variations. The combination of squirrel hair, flashabou and marabou makes this an excellent fish catching pattern.
This particular pattern is tied on a AFF N201 (3x-long, humped shank, nymph hook). This hook is super strong and extremely sharp. I have caught some 20+inch trout on this pattern and have never bent or broke this hook. Check out Allen Fly Fishing www.allenflyfishing.com to view their selection of hooks, beads and much more.

I like the use of Maribou and flashabou.

This pattern works!. I add a little loon medium adhesive on the shank of the hook after tying in the hair strip. Pull the hair tight and tie it off on the front, turn the fly over and hit it with the uv and the strip is bonded to the hook. Super durable, maybe not needed but I like the touch. Springs coming almost time to swing a fly or two.

Check out your local fly shop. Both squirrel strips and dubbing are sold by Waspi. Check and see if your local fly tying shop purchases fly tying materials through Wapsi.
You can also go online and purchase these materials. Search the internet for "feather-craft". This is an online fly tying store. Search for "pine squirrel" and "SLF Squirrel Dubbing"
