There are bus and taxis going to the main bus station and train station, Cermoorlawang is very small, you can walk everywhere. (I didn't see any scooters for rental)
I recommend staying at Cemorolawang, it's a small town walking distance from Mount Bromo, both Probolinggo and Malang are farther so you would need to wake up much earlier. I didn't stay at Problinggo or Malang so not sure which is better, but I think Malang is farther.

I shall be arriving in Surabaya and thinking to go to Mount Bromo. Based on my findings, most tour departs from Malang, thus no issue with that. Can I know how much is the transportation cost to Cemaro? I plan to visit solely Mount Bromo. What is the expected ending time of Bromo trip? Can I make it to Surabaya from Probolinggo? Cheers

You should try hiking Mount Semeru, the highest volcano in java and the mountain is visible from Mount Bromo

No, you have to buy a ticket, but you can bypass the ticket by going through the hiking trail I mentioned
Is it easy to backpack Indonesia solo?
Yes it is easy. You can access everything by trains, bus, and flights. Bus likes to rip foreigners off though lol but it's part of the experience.
