  • What was the love life like of the first President and his first lady? These two were at the forefront of events that changed history and shaped the United States as we know it today. While they were the epitome of a power couple, with 40 years of marriage under their belts Adriana had to ask, “have you guys ever had a fight or argument before?”

    You gotta love the General.

@Duke of Norfolk Considering how thankless a job the Presidency can be, I feel like Washington would have preferred his military title. I know that Eisenhower did, for one.

I was going to go with His Excellency but I thought it might be too formal...on the other hand I was tempted to include RISE UP! afterward a la “Hamilton”. 😂
But for the sake of revision, I will restate: You gotta love the General/Mr. President.

The attraction between George and Martha was mutual, powerful, and immediate. Martha was charming, attractive, and wealthy. George had his own appeal, standing over 6’2, he was an imposing figure with a formidable reputation as a military leader. Check out the timeline of their relationship here: bit.ly/2DLbOnf

I think I remember reading they had several disagreements about Jacky.... because he didn’t know how to behave lol

Quite true! I believe this was probably the main source of contention in their relationship. Otherwise, they were very well suited and appeared to have had much in common.

historygirl0126 When I read “Washington: A Life”, I legitimately needed to have a cry after Jacky died because it was RIGHT after he sent that letter basically calling George his dad and was really maturing as a young man.

I don't think Washington ever legally adopted Martha's children.

There was no such thing in law as legal adoption until 1851. He was their legal guardian.

I assumed all married couples argue and disagree

Love this! Sometimes, we forget that the Washingtons, like us, were all too human. I am certain they had their disagreements, as all couples do, but, undoubtedly, they sought compromise and made up at the end of the day. I have read that they had different parenting styles particularly with the rearing of Mrs. Washington’s son, Jacky. He was apparently quite the handful as a child!

Thank you Mr Washington, I'll be borrowing that "lively" phrase for future marital mishaps.

There was that one time when Martha asked if a corset made her look on the heavy side.

How would he know if they ever had a fight, lol? All married couples get into fights. It wasn't a Brady Bunch world back then either.
