I marched tenors in a Top 12 line in the early 1980s and although the shells were not this bad, my set was known not so affectionately as “The Clusterfux” because the angles were not that far off from this set. We also had similar harnesses and I had mine just like this with only one bolt instead of two. Even though we wore our drums much higher back then, mine were still too high even at the lowest setting. We finally added a brace to keep it straight. I’m betting one of the production assistants has a kid in a junior high band and they offered to borrow some drums for the commercial shoot.
They should have Hired Eric and paid him $5,000 to play the part in their commercial, even for 6 seconds... it would have been so cool to see some sweeps and drum to drum action
No, an advertisement does not need a $2000 set of drums. It got its points off clearly and precisely. It's just a good commercial. As a mountain biker, I know I look at the mountain bikes they use in commercials. Sometimes they clearly have no idea what they're doing but other times they do. It's not the cost of the bike that matters. It's the talent riding it. They got this right in this commercial. The man knows how to drum.
The first time I heard those duts in the background I almost snapped to attention and went to hit the attack. My brain was so confused and then in was excited to see it was an actual marching drummer! Then I heard that tuning! Ha ha!
80% makes sense if they recorded at 24fps, 1/48 shutter speed on a dark set, then sped it up to 30fps for TV. It would still look smooth, and unnoticeable if there wasn't any gravity and weight related movements.
The wobbly drum is probably a sign that they're cheap, and/or hastily put together, but I think it enhances the physical comedy also. Just a little extra cartoonish, to go with the foot in a paper bag, and the way too serious look on his face. Like, "Oh no! He's a madman! He could come apart at any moment!" 😂 The more I watch, the more I like the wobble.
Another clue is the fan above his head. My neighbor has that fan and because of the curved design of the blade it doesn't need to rotate very fast to move mass amounts of air. Just nit picky thing I picked up on
I think you hit it right on the head like they purposely made it look crappy to grab your attention and then to make the chicken wings look and sound so much better like that’s part of the advert. That’s how it works but very nice breakdown. I love it.
As bad as these were, they still weren't as bad as my first "tenors" in high school. I was the first ever to want to play the tenor parts, and all they had for me were a mismatched pair of stand mounted concert toms for a makeshift quad setup. All wasn't lost, though, and they bought two brand new sets of marching quads when I was a junior. That was in the late 90's and they still have tenor players today. Not bad for a military style band that doesn't actually march with them. Lol
Just plugging USC drumline / Trojan Marching Band does a lot of commercials/TV shows/movies. They’re nicknamed Hollywood’s band! Just highlighting that there are plenty of casting crews that do their due diligence and try to find musicians for scenes that require musicians.
Anybody remember the Lexus commercial years ago with the drum set player in the tuxedo? Now that was real drumming and it sounded great. I just had they only show the drummer playing for a few seconds.
I heard about the "Dut Dut Dut Dut" thing for the very first time two days ago and when watching this video, and the very next day, I spotted a car's license plate with 'DUT' on it! 😄
No way, a ad, this man is paying attention, and do a Mickey Once upon a time, they have a drum thing in there, and since it is Christmas time, I just thought it would be a good idea to
could you do a “drums are never animated correctly” video on the new fortnite mode? they made the drums more realistic and im just curious to know how truly correct they are
you missed another pretty bad negative....the uniform. Holy Band Geek Batman!!! You could cut carpet with the pleats in those pants....and the color? 70's inspired for sure
I would guess they had the guy come in and play a few licks, and then the production guys found the one the liked best, and then changed the speed to get it to fit in the overall time for the commercial, rather than try to write something out and have him play it at the perfect tempo to fit the commercial timing. #budget
I don't understand how a producer doesn't say "Hey, let's use the Internet to find someone who actually plays tenor drums". Or on movies - why don't they hire someone who actually plays drums.
Having sold fencing gear for several film and TV shoots over the years....they often don't know what they want until damn near the day of the shoot. And they don't care about accuracy, just wat looks good in their mind.
For those who don't know and what was explained to me in 7th grade band when I asked about the "duts", I was told that instead of just counting off and the tone and volume of someone's voice could vary so "duts" are used as they're generally uniform and can be forced out where all can hear. 🤷🏻♂️😕😉
Join the club! Ha! Now you understand what it’s like to see some 12 year old he/she give a Michael J fox finger special to it’s fretboard in commercials.
I'm bored watching too much TH-cam so I'm gonna play the part of Uber eats and argue each point. The duts. Our drummer does have ungodly chops. His name was Juan, he left the set in San Diego with a whole group of family in some really nice cars.
They added the duts because they knew you were going to react to it/play along and wanted to help you get a clean attack.
I also dut to myself though just for fun. Get's me pumped man.
ches
i’m just glad they include drumming to show diversity in activities
Thank you :)
Those drums are INSANELY old Premieres from the late 80's. You can tell by the rim bolt casings

The funny thing is, those tenors are the exact same as the ones I used for my first few years of high school.
2:00 the drums sound like that one video with the pringle cans

It is the new RamPad Tenor Pack - Woody version. Note here, you can march with the RamPad Tenor Pack!

ceiling fan speed is another giveaway. could even be used to calculate how much it was sped up.
