    Thanks so much for this very helpful video. Just completed replacing the Rear Coil Springs on my 2007 Sienna. I want to stress to others who haven't done this job yet that you only need to remove the lower portion of the rear shocks if your shocks are good (mine are only 2 years old). If you haven't replaced the rear shocks yet, it would be worth it to do it at same time you are doing the rear coils. I also want to stress the importance of first removing the bolt holding the ABS sensor on each side, then lowering the control arms on BOTH sides before removing the coils....makes more room for the coils to pop out easier....then place each coil in on both sides before recompressing and bolting the shocks. I also recommend using anti-seize on the treads of the lower shock bolt. Good luck!

    Thank you so much for this great video. It helped me a lot. I have a 2008 Sienna here with 180,000 miles. The passenger side spring was broken near the base and both rear control arms were corroding pretty bad. I wire brushed away and washed the control arms multiple times with soapy water then sprayed rust converter followed by a flat black hard enamel rust paint. We'll see if that buys me a few more years of life. Anyways had no issues removing the old equipment - the old springs were rusted into their seats so I had to work them more, use my trusty flat heat screwdriver and a couple of different sized pry bars but I got'em. The old shocks, although heavily corroded, actually performed pretty good. The replacement springs were Moogs (box cut) and seemed heavier than the ones being replaced (which were tapered). For the life of me I could not get those springs to seat so I rented a coil spring compressor tool from Canadian Tire (which if you don't damage and return within 3 days becomes a free rental - keep all your paperwork!). After fiddling around with the the spring compressor to figure out how to best use it and making sure the bolt head that you turn to compress is pretty much centered I compressed the springs about 3/4" of an inch - that was enough to get them to seat - and thankfully both spring installs mirrored each other very well. Then I washed up the original shock dust boots, squished in the the new shocks 3 times each (letting them fully extend in-between) and got some extra hands to feed the shock in to start the nuts. From there on it was pretty close to the rest of your video. Except I needed to used a small 2x4 chunk and mallet to tap the shocks onto their mounting studs. Thanks Again!

    I agree with David Breiner on this one. Just unbolt the lower portion of the shock, disconnect the ABS line, and go for it. My shocks aren't that old and still feel really strong. My mechanic whom I trust with much, wanted $400 to do this job which only cost me $83 for the new springs. The back end sits up higher now. (My old springs were broken.) And it rides much better! Thanks for the video, it helped a lot!

    2015 Sienna had 17mm nut at the top with metric allen key to stop rotation of the shaft.

    Pep Boys quoted $1300 for both springs and installation on a 2005 Sienna LE FWD. They said it was also labor intensive ant two hours and very dangerous. I’d imagine that on other vehicles this may be the case, but I was surprised how DIY this appears for the Sienna and based on the comments here. I found the parts (Moog) for $84 and will try to install them soon. I had already replaced the shocks recently but didn’t realize the springs were gone until I went to PB to get a new set of tires.
    Just a few added tips::
    1. If possible (sometimes the plastic puts up a fight), carefully disconnect the speed sensors from the wheel hubs. Use a pick or a small flat head to push the tab in order to pull them away.
    2. In other videos (TRQ has a good series on Siennas), the tech removes the shocks by actually pushing upwards just a small amount on the control arm in order to help relieve pressure on the lower portion of the shock. Of course, this would require you to have another jack (perhaps a bottle jack might help) since both tires need to be removed in order to lower the entire control arm for spring removal. Then again, mine seemed to have come out easily just like yours did.
    3. I think you’re struggling with the upper part of the shocks. My 2005 LE shocks (both original and replacements) have a spot on top of the shocks that fit a hex wrench, so when you’re loosening up the bolts, the hex wrench keeps it all in place so you don’t have to go fishing for bolts and washers.
    4. Upper shock torque is 22 ft-lbs. If you can’t get a torque wrench in there a very good snug will hit that but I prefer to always follow specs.
    5. Lower shock torque is 85 ft-lbs. I would never skimp on having proper torque.
    6. I read a comment somewhere else where someone used white paint at the top of the spring and the bottom to help better see how the springs should align.
    6. lug nuts are 76 ft-lbs torque.

    What you mean to say is not only dis-connect the lower shock mounts on both sides .....but to get the rear of the car up in the air jacked up on both sides in the back ( with jackstands finally).... AND THEN.... disconnect the lower shock mounts. These two actions together will allow the suspension to drop more to get the springs out. Also....once this is done and you slightly force the suspension further down to allow the old spring to come out..... BE CAFEFUL not to over-extend the flex brake line and maybe the ABS sensor line.... your focus will be to get the spring out ....and you might not "see" that you are damaging these areas. Just now saw your point about the top shock washer "popping" out and needing a magnet, etc. The shocks are gas-pressureized so better to take off the BOTTOM mounts first....THEN the top mounts...so that "pop" won't happen. Cheers.

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would tend to agree that disconnecting the bottom shock from the control arm would make the job a little easier... or removing the top nut while the rear wheels are still on the ground could also work as well. Thanks for your comments!

    Great video. For the AWD sienna, it is much harder as the rear axles are in the way. You would have to unbolt the axles from the differential side, drop the rear differential and exhaust a little bit and support it otherwise the trailing arm doesn't go low enough for the spring to come out.

    I saw your video and I appreciate the step-by-step instructions. I was planning on putting an Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate Air Helper Springs with Internal Jounce Bumpers, but after looking at the video and the video that the sales vendor had on their site, the entire suspension setup is different from what I saw. I have a 2005 Toyota Sienna too, but I think that the vendor for the Air Lift suspension was using some sort of truck suspension, because I didn't see and leaf suspension parts for the Toyota Sienna on your video. I will have to take a look and see if there is another type of heavy duty suspension kit that I can buy for the Toyota Sienna.
    I plan on hauling a concession trailer, that's why I am starting to plan for the added weight that I am about to haul with the mini van. Since I can't afford to buy a truck just yet, the minivan will have to do. The good thing is that I am not going too far with the concession trailer, if anything 3 to 10 miles at the most.

    Wow, that skips something like 15 steps from the Service Manual, but looked good. For the AWD they even have you "remove propeller w/center bearing shaft assy" and then both rear drive shafts. I'm wondering if a spring compressor would make life easier. I just replaced the springs on my 4runner, and had to do a fair amount of prying...but it was only 4 pages in the FSM, not 9 plus references to other areas.

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comments. As you can see from the video, no need to brake out spring compressors. I wonder about the people who write repair procedures.

      @aarondaniel7688 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hardlymovingpro The FSM doesn't include the use of spring compressors, but if doing such would need less opening of suspension height/space, and so some steps could be skipped, it would be worth it. Half of the steps are just undoing wires and brake lines to give some slack so you don't put stress on them or ruin them. But the AWD specific steps will add some time if they are really needed.

    Hey, how do you know the bolts are tight enough to hold in the shocks?

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're referring to the bottom of the shocks, there are slipped on to the control arm shock studs and held in place with nuts (not bolts). The nuts prevent the lower shocks from moving around on the stud and therefore do not require high torque fastening. The top of the shocks are secured to the chassis via bushings and shock nuts. The nylon nuts are tighten until they bottom out onto the shock stud. The nylon is there to prevent the nut from loosening off.

    In your opinion if a 2001 Sienna has a problem bottoming out on bumps in the road would you predict shocks or springs is the main problem. Vehicle 120 k miles all original. Thanks, Jeff

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If bottoming out on the rear end ... yes, I'd say at a minimum the shocks are gone. Just push down on the rear bumper with your feet and let go ... then push again and see if its bouncing up and down. You can determine if the rear springs are shot but measuring the distance from the ground to the top inner lip of the rear wheel well... then compare the distance with the front end wheel well.

But my ride is rough and bumpy. I run a small business and I over load car often. Can the coil spring be bad while still looking physically good ?

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you measure the height of the rear end relative to the front end before you removed the springs? The new springs job is to restore the ride height. When you removed the old shocks, did you attempt to compress them? Worn shocks may compress down too easy or too hard. The important thing is the rebound. If there's little to no rebound, that means the nitrogen has escaped out of the shock(s) and only the springs will pull the shock stems back up. If that's the case, you vehicle will have a very rough ride.

    • @kexia
      @kexia 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hardly Moving Productions Yes I compressed the shock and did a side by side comparison with the new one, it come right back out just like the new one. The coil spring doesn’t impact the ride comfort? Just the height ? Appreciate your reply! Thanks.

The bottom end of where the coil ends (regardless of one end or the other) should be rotated until it seats against the end of the grove in the spring seat. It's all shown in the video.
