    Best looking spacesuits ever

    • @Duhya
      @Duhya 6 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      Agreed they look like robots or sci-fi suits.
      Only caveat is it's a flight suit, for use in the vehicle during ascent and reentry. They won't be leaving the capsule with it, and definately won't be walking on any planet but earth with it.
      So it's not a spacesuit the same way as Apollos surface suits were, or massive bulky EVA suits are. Looks cool though.

      @DaFinkingOrk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      There have been some great-looking designs and early prototypes for spacesuits over the years - none developed like the SpaceX one though.
      A spacesuit needs to provide pressure to the person inside, that's the primary function (EVA suits also need temperature regulation and radiation protection etc, and both IVA and EVA need an oxygen supply of course). But there's another way to provide this pressure... It's always been done by pumping air into the suit, and I'm pretty sure SpaceX's one still uses that principle (just looks much much cooler doing so). That makes movement laborious and restricted. And it also makes the wearer's body shape less humanlike and more puffed out.
      Another way of providing that pressure is to have a suit so tight it simply mechanically presses against you with the required force. With advanced materials that are very strong yet somewhat flexible and stretchable, that paradoxically results in more manoeuvrability, as the crushing force you'd expect from such a suit is counteracted by the lack of external air pressure. It'd be just like wearing a tight bodysuit (nowadays and near future) made of fairly tough and thick material. Still superior in manoeuvrability and looks than air-pressurised designs though. And in the intermediate future, materials may allow something with the qualities more like a thick tougher spandex to achieve the desired effect, finally allowing the type of spacesuits seen in a lot of sci fi. An air-pressurised helmet like the spacex one would be mated to it. And areas where the suit could not provide direct pressure (I'm thinking mainly male genitals especially), you could also have a pocket of pressurised air within the suit.
      Liquid micro-channels for cooling could be built into it, or it could be very heat insulating and have heat-conductive strips forming a network connecting to the life support package. Which would likely be a backpack, or external, or "front pack" like a chest plate. Some degree of radiation shielding could be built in by using boron, lead etc atoms woven into the structure.
      Data could likewise be carried between different parts of the suit using strips of woven-in conductive materials or even fibre-optics (which would be excessive in therms of data bandwidth but might be safer). Sections of the suit could have woven-in microprocsssors - remember none of this has to be embedded into the suit, it can be *part of the material* by changing its nanoscale structure and chemistry in certain areas. So the microprocessors and virtually everything else can be flexible - not that it would matter since they'd be so small and could be built into hard parts of the suit like knee and shoulder pads, which could be useful anyway (magnetic back pads and kneepads anyone).
      The problem is using that type of suit in a pressurised capsule, where it could crush you! My two solution ideas are to have piezoelectric expansion/contraction seams that adjust the tightness according to external pressure, use a futuristic material that can expand and contact itself rapidly in response to an electrical or chemical signal given off by the control system.
      This is the future of spacesuits IMO, they'll be these fully-interated suits like a second skin, very safe and adaptive, so flexible you could do zero-G gymnastics in them, good looking and conceivably quite fashionable (especially loads of sexy space women wearing them around) - I'd expect them to become so fashionable that earthlings wear similar mock versions.

      RedButtonProductions What you are describing is called a counterpressure suit. They were first developed at JSC in the early 1970s. They look like nothing so much as long underwear, and brave was the man who first put one on and stepped into a vacuum chamber. Harvard University (or is it MIT?) is continuing research and development of the technology. I'm sure they will perfect it one day.

    Space x is truly the company of innovations. It’s just leaps and bounds ahead of the competition not only in technology but also in mindset. Just looking thru dragon and comparing it with star liner from a rival company - the dragon looks like a Tesla while the other is more like a reskinned Soyuz. The same can be said about the suits. Hopefully space x can be the apple of aviation, and maybe then human space flight can truly move forward to the 21st century.

    I've been waiting for SpaceX footage. The more space companies the better but SpaceX is my favorite because of their explicit goal to colonize Mars. Hopefully they'll be able to test the BFR in 2019.

    • @odysseusrex5908
      @odysseusrex5908 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only thing they might possibly test in 2019 will be a subscale model, just testing the engines and control systems. They haven't even built the factory where they're going to build real BFRs. Don't expect one to roll out of the doors before 2022.

    • @smittyjohnson9554
      @smittyjohnson9554 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I heard they were going to try to do a suborbital hop with it to test the engines. I didn't realize it was going to be subscale though. Hopefully they can get it done by 2022. It'll be amazing watching it take off for the first time.

    • @odysseusrex5908
      @odysseusrex5908 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      2022? Maybe. Whatever, the fact is that they have not even *begun* to construct the first real BFR, and it's going to be some time before they do. All I can say is, the sooner, the better.

      They should be posting something soon, most likely by the end of the year within the next 4 months. Musk said the first hop test prototype could be ready within the first half of 2019. It will be a bare bones version of the BFR spaceship though since they are just testing the vertical take off & landing systems.

      @810361 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheAtom
      Right. Meaning there won’t be any insides. But, seeing it hip and land will be just as awesome. So, we’re living the BFS for awhile until living habitats can be built. According to Paul. Honestly, I thought two ships full of cargo would arrive at Mars with robots/3D printing. Habitats should be built and prepared before humans arrived.

    • @theatom7264
      @theatom7264 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Gonzales thats the idea yeah. They plan to use the first handfull of BFR spaceships that land on Mars as habitats at first then they’ll start ether drilling underground caverns for a subterranean habitat or building the Mars city on the surface shortly after. 3D printing will be a must have to make this happen in a timely & efficant manner.

    SpaceX suit > Boeing Suit.

    • @notapplicable7292
      @notapplicable7292 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Boeing is a flight suit whereas this is a weird combination of a flight suit and a space suit. Also while the SpaceX suit looks sick it lacks a lot of the functionality of the Boeing suit.

    • @odysseusrex5908

      Not Applicable What functionality do you think is lacks?

    • @notapplicable7292
      @notapplicable7292 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It lacks things like a soft hood and storage space.

      Looks like it doesn't have as much freedom of movement as the Boeing suit. Having a helmet is probably a bonus but the design of that helmet needs to be done very carefully so that it doesn't cause stress on the spine under extreme conditions. The helmet from NASA's ACES was shown to have contributed to additional spinal injury during an accident

    It will have to hold a minimum of 20% normal earth pressure with pure oxygen. Getting spacecraft to 100% is figure out and relatively easy these days. Space suits on the other hand are a lot harder.

      This is not an EVA suit, thats why its sleek

    • @skyr8449
      @skyr8449 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is an iva suit, those were eva suits, these are basically just pressure suits incase the capsule leaks during ascent or landing, however, it is a huge step towards them making an eva suit, qhich needs more radiation protection and a few other important systems (I don't know the exact things this suit has)
