    I love hearing the revelie song on campouts in the morning. It’s very nice. One winter camp apparently someone played a trombone as well.

    Thank you for the video. I am the bugler for the troop that I am currently in. I wanted to go for this merit badge because I thought since that all I need to do for Life is wait, so I wanted to do an easy merit badge. I knew most of the songs already but I had a few that I couldn't get the tempo right and they just didn't sound right. Thank you for putting this video together again, it helped a lot.

    Pondersam, you played very well. It has been more than 35 years since I have played these calls. I was my Boy Scout Summer Camp Staff Bugler for 5 years and enjoyed doing it. I did play in the key of Bb on my trumpet. Now I am back into Scouting and working with a troop as a MB counselor and was recently asked to teach the Music and Bugling Merit Badges at an upcoming Twilight Camp to Scouts that will be helping out and want to earn a MB while on their down time. Like I said, 30 years, my embusher is shot and I am going to have to start practicing to get it ready for the end of April... I pulled my official BSA bugle (key of F like you played) out of storage and I am going to purchase a cheap trumpet on line so that I have both. I do like the fact that you used a lower register for this and I will follow suit for the class that I will teach. I am going to record your playing so that I have something to help show them.

    For anyone interested if you speed up the video to 1.5x it will sound how its traditionally played. if you speed it to 2.0x its then played like a concert musician would play if they were showing off.

    This is amazingly helpful! Thank you so much! My only comment is that Taps isn't played here as it is written in the BSA Merit badge booklet. In the third phrase, the G-C-E combination isn't a dotted rhythm - it is written evenly (if you were singing it, it's the "From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky" phrase). You often hear it played as dotted, and it's completely recognizable as Taps anyway if you play it dotted, but I like to point it out to the Scouts I counsel so they can see the difference.

    If a boy plays the Trumpet or Trombone, could he play those 15 Bugle Calls, and still earn the badge (playing them with the trumpet or trombone)? I may be wrong, but if one can proficiently play a trumpet or trombone, they should be able to play the bugle. With the bugle, it's a matter of "knowing the tunes."

    • @scottsopata7405
      @scottsopata7405 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The merit badge handbook says you can earn it on the bugle trumpet or cornet since they are all played the same way but I don’t believe trombone would count since it’s an entirely different instrument

    • @fshalor738
      @fshalor738 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scottsopata7405
      It was a long time ago, but I earned the Badge on euphonium. It's really a pattern rhythm and chop thing. Trombone in 6th position honors the F - horn root. (same as 1+3 on Bb trumpet)
      In 8th grade, I did several of these through a week long camp on a baritone and the camo loved it.
      As an adult getting into a leadership role with Cubs, I'm looking to start adding these in to our ceremonies. (will probably play in a trumpet. )

    my son has a B flat beginning trumpet. Do you still use the same valve combination?

    • @pondersam
      @pondersam  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kenneth Yen any valve combination can be used for bugling on a trumpet. I chose 1 and 3 because it is a lower range than the open valve position, which most beginners find to be too difficult.

    This isn't really bugling but more trumpeting?

    • @Fitzgeraldtmarie
      @Fitzgeraldtmarie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Overlooking the fact that this is a helping video...we used a trumpet because it sounded better when my Scout was learning. Bugles generally are tuned to B flat. So as not to deter 'newbies', I say start out any way you can. If it was easy, EVERYBODY would be doing it. My hat's off to all the boys who have sought to earn this rare badge...

    You left out Waiters' Call. Also, To the Colors does NOT command all the respect of the National Anthem; It's a prep call and during it, you come to attention and face the flag. You do NOT render a salute (military salute, scout salute, or hand/hat over heart) until the first note of the National Anthem.

    • @pondersam
      @pondersam  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just read the book and spoke from the heart. I am not formally educated in military code, so forgive me if I stand and put my hand on my heart when they raise the flag.

    • @santamanone
      @santamanone 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      pondersam Exactly! No problems with that. In fact, that's whole the point. They don't start to raise (or lower) the flag during the "preparatory" bugle calls (either To the Colors or Retreat) that's why they're called "preparatory" calls. They allow people time to stand up, face the flag, and put down anything in their hands, etc. Then when the National Anthem begins (and that's when they begin to raise or lower the flag) They will be ready to render the appropriate salute.

    • @psumurph
      @psumurph 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      santamanone A clarification: When a band is not present or the anthem is not otherwise being played, To the Colors commands all the same courtesies of the anthem. Don't take pondersam's word for it - here it is from the army: www.music.army.mil/music/buglecalls/tothecolor.asp

    • @santamanone
      @santamanone 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Murphy To be perfectly honest, I've never seen a band present. And you're right; I was confusing two separate bugle calls: I was confusing To The Colors with Retreat. Retreat is the preparatory call (at the end of the day) and To The Colors is used in place of the Anthem on occasion. All that said, I don't believe the Air Force (nor the Navy/Marines) use the Army regs, but they should all be very, very similar, if not identical; especially in this regard.

    • @santamanone
      @santamanone 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      That makes sense. Waiters' Call is used in Scout Camp though.
