    So today in my class my teacher humiliated me in front of everyone because I didn't understand this topic even though I've been paying attention and taking notes. This video has helped me so much you don't even understand. I was told Id probably fail since I didn't know a question, and now with having this method Ill hopefully prove them wrong. Thank you so much!

    Thank you for this. I always taught my students this little trick: to quickly find the name of a key in flats (besides F Major) always check the next to the last flat. That will tell you the key. For # keys always move half step up from the last sharp.

    • @BradHarrison
      @BradHarrison  3 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      Also useful! I do cover those tricks in my updated key signatures video, though I do find the extra rules and complications a bit cumbersome. Students tend to mix and match the rules. (ie. Up a semitone from the second last flat?)

    After 16 years of playing music and taking lessons and learning on my own, I find today that you helped me really understand this. I've been studying your videos for a couple of days and for the first time in my life I kinda start to understand music and think about what might be the key of a song I'm learning based on the first chord... Things I've seen my teachers do but never fully understand... What can I say, except for THANK YOU!!!

    I had to learn everything off by heart as a kid, so I never had the beauty of using tricks and things to help. As a violinist, I have always dreaded having to figure out if the note is flat, sharp or natural especially when it is a note in 3rd position and over, so this video is fairly helpful whenever I get a new piece to practice. Thank you, on behalf of violinists :)

    I did years of sight reading competitions in school, and take my children to an old-fashioned shape note singing school every year, and have never understood how to figure key signatures.... i've always waited for someone else to say what key we were in, and then I could read the music... teaching my children music theory now, and I want to fully understand. I’ve been playing the cello for 8 years now, but relied strongly on the physical side of playing so my theory has never been great. I’m aiming to take grade 8 at some point but haven’t done any exams since grade 4. To take grade 8 I need to pass grade 5 theory so am revising for that. This made life so much easier! You explained it super clearly and I understood right away! Many thanks :)

    I'm in 8th grade and has been playing violin for 3 years and I still didn't know any of this, but this is very clear and helpful, thank you

    Great video! I did learn to play the violin when I was a kid, but now I can't remember anything and this video is good to start with. Tho I think I'll rewatch it a few more times to make sure it stays in my head. And I'm getting subscribed!

      Welcome back! Yeah, this stuff takes a while to really sink in. The more you live with it and actually work it out on your instrument, the faster things will settle down. Good luck!

      They call it “evergreen content”! Even if the production values don’t hold up in the future(and I do think my videos have gotten a bit slicker since the first), the content is basically good and useful forever.

    Tip to remember the order of sharps and flats:
    BEAD.GCF (Bead go call Frank)
    FCGDAEB (Fat cats gulp dandelions and eat bushes)

    • @isaiahphillip4112
      @isaiahphillip4112 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey somebody else uses a fat cats mnemonic, years ago I learned FCGDAEB by making up:
      FCGDAEB "Fat cats get dough and eat bread"
      BEADGCF"bead gets cats fat"
      Admittedly the flats mnemonic doesn't make much sense, but meh it worked for me.
