Thanks Neil, another great video, sooner of later every 159 will need a new rack, and I though it would be much more complicated. Keep working on Alfas please, plenty of information for other brands on TH-cam.
Your videos are THE BEST regardings how to's and explanations on every Alfa topic. I hope your channel grew so I can do then maintance to my Alfa 159. Here at Uruguay is VERY expensive.
Great video and advice. I’m getting knocking noise in steering on my Brera when I haven’t used car for a few weeks. And squealing sound. AND AWFUL knocking sound when I am driving.
Figured i put this in here. I did this on my 159 left hand drive v6 awd. Only way to pull it out is to pull the subframe down about an inch to make space for the heat shield and column to rotate. Figured id save someone a few hours of trying to do it the way on the video and just embrace that you have to do extra work. Also, get ready for lots of bruises as it is super tight with the exhaust pipes, driveshaft, transfercase, swaybar and alternator. Make sure you have a 16 ratchet wrench.
The clamp inside that goes round the splines on the rack Ive often found can be very stubborn to free off even after a few nights of being soaked with plusglas.
I've got a steering hose gone, the rubber part crimped on the steel pipe right by the reservoir is leaking (2.2 Brera). Do you have a video on changing it? Thanks!! Great channel...!!
U ever had a situation that 159 steering wheel vibrates while car is standing sill and u move steering wheel left and right.. Starter happening after replaceing long hydraulic hose (that goes from pump to steering rack) and changeing fluid.. Hose is new and original
My 06 2.4 jtd Brera had a horrible steering vibration a little while after i bought it... it was only present when stationary and turning the wheel but not on the road. Over time the vibration worsened and there was a noise from the pump area like a wailing banshee. First we replaced the leaky jose from pas reservoir to pump. It didnt help so we concluded the pump had been starved of fluid due to the leak so we then replaced the pump with new one and also a new reservoir with fresh later alfa spec fluid. It cured the noise but still the steering was vibrating so we put on a recon rack and still it vibrates just when still. On top of that id say the steering feel is really poor and theres abit of wander on the roads. I drove another later 2.4jtd brera for comparison and it too had a vibrating steering. I dont know what to do about it on my car now as nothing left to replace unless we got unlucky with a recon rack being as bad as my original one. Seems its a weak point on theses cars and its not exactly a cheap repair/replace either.
@@liudasvalickas4345 Hello yes, at some point i realised that the vibration felt in the steering wasnt from the steering components at all. The vibration went away when turning the wheel if revs were held at 1500rpm or higher. What was causing it is worn lower engine mounts. The upper mount was initially replaced as it was shred to bits but the lower ones cause the engine vibrations to feedback. This actually ruins the steering somewhat. I dont know if its unique to the 2.4 5cyl diesel models but the nature of this heavy diesel could be putting more demand on such mounts vs a 2.2 4cyl or the 3.2 6 cyl as those are inherently better balanced (one reason 5cyl is not very common i suppose!). So to all owners check your engine mounts and replace if required and feel a massive positive difference!
@@tomwebb7091 Seems very reasonable as the vibration feels like from the rubber components. Initially I thought that the main pulley was the problem, but it only made the situation a bit better. Thank for the thought, at least I will know its not critical :)
yes it is the lower mounts as they are located near the rack. They vibrate so much the engine is noisier and the steering vibrates as if the rack itself is failing but if you rev the engine over 2k rpm and turn the steering the vibration is gone. The upper engine mounts can fail but they dont cause any such symptoms@@JoJanDiezel
Do you recommend replacing the bolts on these? They appear to be TTY bolts, but I could be mistaken. In fact, most of the suspension component bolts and engine mount bolts also appear to be TTY.
Hello. After replacing the steering rack on an Alfa Romeo 159, the VDC unavable error comes on. can you tell me where to look for the reason? I reinstalled the steering rods from the old one to a new steering rack
Can you please upload a video where you mount a new steering rack? It’s probably in reverse order, but I’m interested in how you fill and bleed the system.

Hi, anyidea where can I find alfa 156 2.5L V6 2001 auxbelt pulley, crankshaft. Part 60620395. Mine is a bust. The rubberthingy in it failed (shockabsortion) and its now eating engine side and drive belt. Cant find it anywhere
In all your videos, it would be great to say what was the problem with the parts you replaced and make a comparison between old and new parts. Just a suggestion 😏
No need to fully remove the subframe on lhd cars, you just need to loosen the rear part of the subframe and have someone help you pry it down slightly while the other person removes the rack.
@@bazzaren yes. I did it today :) but i loosen all the nuts 6 back 4 front and 2 on the sides and subframe is came down about 2 cm and there is enough place to remove steering rack.

Was it the seals? Years ago they failed on my 1990 33 16v and my alfa specialist repaired it for 300 squid, that was in 2002.
Used racks are £150 about 250 to refurb but they don't tend to last once refurbished.

Not the same but similar
Can you remove the 156 steering rack the same way
No.
Italia Autos so the workshop manual says that I have to lower the subframe? Or remove it? If I have to lower it how much do I drop it?
