    As Somalis we have alot of issues to deal with such as terrorism, famine but our main problem is tribalism. It is so rife within Somali society such that if there were two candidates one who is clearly a brutal dictator and another who is open-minded and has a vision to stabilise the country, you would find people still voting for the dictator. When you ask why the answer is "Well....because he is from my tribe and the other one is not" This is the mentality that stifles stabilisation within Somalia

      It's like everyone's more focused on representing their own clan than coming together as one united country. It's like we're still stuck in the past, refusing to move forward and work together towards a common goal. We could achieve clan unification. To achieve unification, all sides need to come to a mutual understanding and agreement on issues such as power-sharing, resource allocation, and governance structures. This would require negotiations and compromise from all sides. Somalis have a hard time seeing the bigger picture sometimes. We need to do better. We can't keep fighting over land and clans forever. It's starting to feel like some sort of gang warfare.

      There is actually some very strong evidence that foreign aid can be very unhelpful, depending on what it is and who it goes to. If the country isn't already democratized then foreign aid (if given to the government to distribute) will tend to delay democratization and make people's lives worse in the long run. The reason is that those in power, rather than distributing the aid fairly, hold on to it and use it to buy loyalty and strengthen their hold on power. Foreign aid (if it comes in the form of goods rather than money) can also have the effect of weakening the local economy by out competing local businesses for the goods being distributed (as an example: never donate to organizations that send shoes to Africa, as that reduces business for local shoe stores and doesn't really help people all that much anyway).
      However, foreign aid does have the potential to be extremely helpful, if we could just get a good system going for what kind of aid to give and who to give it to. Theoretically the most effective kind of aid would be direct monetary payments to the people affected by whatever crises the aid is meant to alleviate. That would jumpstart local economies by giving people the resources they need to start businesses and become active consumers. In practice it may not be entirely practical for foreign governments and organizations to give aid directly to the people, and will find it necessary to give it to the local government to distribute. I think it is very important that if aid is given directly to a local government, then it is essential that the government has already democratized. Democratic governments are far more likely to spend foreign aid money as intended than autocratic governments. Little if any of the money given to an autocratic government will be spent as intended, and will usually only serve to delay democratization.

    • @AK_14564
      @AK_14564 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Its stupid to say tgat giving aid to countries prevent them from growing. It shows you have never lived under circumstances for help.
      First of all the aid supplied is not even close to the demand to destroy local economies. On the contrary because this vital things are rare they get overpriced and you end up paying a slice of bread 100$. Aid helps lower the cost for basic things.
      Secondly if you have ever been to the position to need external aid to survive, then you would know that there isn't a thing you hate more than the fact you are dependent on that aid. These systems are not even close to consistent. One day the may have food to give the other not. It is not something you can rely on. For most people, actually managing to get the aid is a veeery rare occasion that happens only when they are lucky because of the high demand.
      So no, aid does not make people lazy or prevents economies from developing.

    To clarify the collapse in food was due to forgien overfishing in Somali waters. This was also why many fishermen would end up engaging in Piracy. In the early 1980s it was a mix of European and eastern fishermen but by the 1990s the bulk of illegal fishing was done by the Chinese. Which is why the country has never been able to solve it's food problem.

Two she isn't anti-semitic and she made bad comments with poorly chosen words. What she actually said had a lot of truth to it and the fact that you think she is anti-semitic is proof that you care about her wording than what she was actually talking about. She specifically was talking about pro-Israel sentiments in the US allowing the Israeli government to commit acts against Palestinians. Also, she has defended several other Jewish members of government on several occasions. The Europeans knew our wishes, our self-determination calls, our history in the region, and our relations with the bordering peoples, they consulted us before independence as if they were genuinely interested in the fate of our people post-independence, and then they went the other way when it was time to deliver by ignoring the unanimous wish of the Somalis in the areas outside the Somali Republic, they outright rigged referendums in some places and they invited non-Somali ethnic groups close by to have a say on whether we Somalis and our ancestral territories should be allowed to unite or not. The truth is, the borders left by the Europeans doomed our people to marginalization and brutalization right next door at the hands of our age-old foes, and the world expected the newly independent Somali Republic to just look the other side as if nothing was happening. Mind you, some of the so-called neighboring countries were lobbying hard against the very idea of an independent Somali nation in postcolonial Africa before its birth, it is people with this hostile view towards Somali sovereignty and independence that we were asked to find a common ground with. Somalia is the primary reason why I dont think that the drawing of African borders or the non-existence of African nation states are the real reasons why Africa has so many prolems.
    In Somalia lives one people, with one ethnicity, speaking one language and following one religion. And still it is the most downtrodden and most failed state in Africa. How can this be if supposedly the lack of a national identidy is causing all the problems? Africa's problems root majorly in something else. Tribalism may be a force here but then it is structures that existed long before colonialism.
