  • Chad provides a comprehensive lesson on capacitors. It begins with a introduction to some applications of capacitors and the definition of capacitance (C=Q/V). The formulas for the potential energy stored in a capacitor are then presented. Chad then introduces parallel plate capacitors. He shows the equation for the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor with and without a dielectric and the relationship between the potential difference across and electric field inside a capacitor. Chad solves a problem involving calculating the capacitance of and potential energy stored by a capacitor as well as the capacitance if a dielectric is incorporated.
The rest of the lesson is devoted to capacitors in circuits. Chad introduces circuit diagrams including the symbols for batteries, capacitors, and resistors and shows how to identify when circuit elements are arranged in series or parallel. He then shows how to calculate the equivalent capacitance for capacitors in series and parallel as well as how to determine the potential difference across and charge stored by each capacitor in a circuit. The lesson concludes with the solving of a more complex capacitors in circuits problem that involves finding the equivalent capacitance of a circuit involving capacitors in series and parallel and then determining the amount of charged stored in each capacitor in the circuit.
