I think the second theory about the Grubfather being the grubs' cocoon is pretty solid. I doubt the Grubfather was just like "ooh, my babies *nom nom*"
I imagine a conversation between them going like this Grubs (in a muffled voice): Ok dad, metamorphosis done Grubfather: Alright, fly my children! Then a bunch of grubberflies just straight up come out of his mouth
@Me Alexander yes I know some animals eat their young if they're desperate for food, but we don't know that that happened here. Maybe that's not how they mature in real life, but don't forget this is a videogame in a very much fictional universe. The bugs are mostly just somewhat based on irl creatures. We can throw out theories all day because despite what you say, we don't know for sure why he ate the grubs or what will happen to them
My theory is that the collector was protecting the Grubbs from the infection by placing them in jars and that the Fake Grubbs are what happens when a grubb gets infected by the radiance and so the grubbfather ate them to protect them from being infected
Maybe they’re happy because they’re safe and they all get to be together also what if an infected grubb becomes a Moth like the radiance while a non-infected grubb becomes a grubberfly I believe this because of the collectors line of “a safe space for you and you and you” which I think refers to the collector protecting the Grubbs and putting them in a “safe place” A.K.A the jars
Soulreaper 91 if that was true, then why doesn’t Seer show signs of infection? Also, I would think that the Radiance would want to protect the Moths, and the infected bugs we see are definitively *not* protected
If the grubfather is so hungry... than i do not worry about the grubs. I am sure the grubs inside of him are hungry too... They will just eat him from the inside and be free again!
Got all Grubs today to get the Elgy charm, was totally worth it. Those grubs smiling at you from those tiny holes is what you save them for. And then I came back to find this horrifying sight. Immediately searched on youtube on what the hell happened to the grubs.
@TheSevenSouls plus it feels kind of unlikely that the grub farther would eat them all imagine moving around with such a large body, I assume they enter him.
I feel like they would become like the radiance but without the evil intentions or with the infection. They would just fly around, now happy with their new form.
What if the grubberflies just superficially resemble the radiance, since they have similar forms and light-based powers (if the charm is accurate) The collector, being a failed kingsmold, would probably not realize they wont become the actual radiance, just harmless grubberflies, and so traps them because they believe that they are stopping a rivaling god from emerging.
What if the collector misunderstood the metamorpasis and thought the grubfather wants to eat them but in reality he was just trapping them and thought he was helping them
My thought was that his character went through a metamorphosis. Originally he seemed like a grateful, caring father, happy that his children have returned home. Only later it is revealed that he had a much darker motive.
Disagree. Hes arrogantly laughing in my opinion. The moment is framed as a shocking macabre twist, not some convoluted heroic lore. He ate them out of instinct or desire, and they'll get revenge, he doesn't realise the truth

Here’s my theory: The collector trapped the Grubs because he thought they would get eaten by their parents. He doesn’t understand that they don’t die. He genuinely thinks that Grubbfather will kill his children. He don’t want them to feel that pain
Makes sense or maybe the Grubfather wasn’t ready to die yet and still had some stuff left to fulfill so he sold the grubs to the collector in order to fulfill those last wishes (hence why he has so much geo) also maybe the collector intended for all of the grubs to be in his care but the grubs somehow got scattered and lost. Grubfather also may have thought that the grubs could go through the process on their own but by the time all of the grubs are found and returned he realises that he needs to be a cocoon to them.
The collector just attacks the knight and even collects bugs that will kill you for combat even sacrificing them in the process and scattering them around everywhere wouldn't be a great idea.
The word holy is used in a prayer to describe the Hollow Knight's shell. Also Marmu who is another grub like bug. Claimed that the White lady was going to teach her how to fly. Lastly the Aluba a flying bug "enemy" are said to be attracted to the resting places of beings of great power. Hence why they can be found by the lake of Unn and the White Lady. So something is clearly up with the grubs in these semi related lore bits. Maybe the grubs use metamorphosis to transform into higher beings, kind of like what pale king did? Maybe the process of metamorphosis is what is considered "holy" in the universe of HollowKnight? We know the pale king was not a fan of other higher beings, It is more than likely that the Pale King made the collector for one reason or another. Maybe to preserve the grubs since the hunter thinks the grubs are week. Maybe to stop them from becoming higher beings. It is hard to say even with the collector dream nail dialogue
The collector may have been a failed kingsmould, but its obsession with collecting was most likely from the love tower key bug, who was probably the original resident, the one who collected the other creatures. Its DN dialogue talks about becoming one with the collector, and the collector seems quite twisted from its screams and track, so when absorbing the love key bug's mind, it got twisted and obsessed with grubs.
@@mushspore3865 But here is the big question. How did this failed kings mold escape from white palace? Even before the Pale King vanished. I mean its possible the collector was the first kings mold but it was not right and the pale king just left the collector in the tower of love. Kind of like the man in the Iron mask story. But I don't know that does not seem like what the Pale King would do.
I think the words of protection when dream nailing The Collector is actually telling us that he wants to help protect the grubs, and put them in jars to protect them. It's just that his idea of protection is a bit messed up.

If we’re to go off your theory of these grubs being similar to actual grubs, then maybe the place which they are kept in is a sort of preparation area for when the grubs will turn into beetles that will then protect and provide for Hallownest (like the dung defender and the nail smith). The grub father is just a sort of gardien that keeps the other grubs in check and sacrifices himself for the grubs and intern, the kingdom. I don’t actually think this but I thought it was a fun theory
I think they will become butterflies, but that thing about Collector tries to defend kingdom is also interesting. So here is what I think - they will turn into holy army of murderious butterflies and they will erase the live from these lands... (and soon die beacouse butterflies don't live too long)
Don't be sorry, sometimes a man has thoughts and they need to be spoken out loudly. So now I see an army of grubflies tearing down the white palace. What you say? The palace is already in ruin and the pale king died? Well.... 😏
Thats a good question actually when I first saw this I actually thought the grub father was evil when I saw he ate all the grubs but then I realized they sound happy Relyea :+')
Hell that's actually a really good theory, the grubs could be moths from the moth tribe that have not gone through metamorphosis yet, pretty caterpillars often turn into big-ass moths so I do see it as something that can happen, and it makes sense for the collector to be separating them from the gru father because more moths means more people who remember the radiance, and the pale king was trying to remove the radiance from memory. Then the collector went a bit insane and confused his duties of keeping them apart with a wish to protect and safehouse them.
I like your theories, they're cool and some of it makes sense. Also thank you for mentioning the theory that Grubfather ate them to help them transform 'cause that makes me feel a lot better than if he just... you know... ate them 😨
For everyone getting angry at TC for no Silksong news and slow development. It’s understandable but you have to remember there is only 3/4 people in Team Cherry. If you ask me I think they should hire Modders with programming experience and who are easy to work with and have a team of at least 10 people for faster development.
I'm surprised TC did not hire extra people for the sequel Toby Fox has gotten help creating Delta Rune a sequel to one of the best indie games alongside Hollow Knight and Shovel Knight Knight would easily beat Shovel Knight and Frisk
Maybe he turns I to a crawlid or a tiktik? Since those are kinda like beetles too? I don't really know I just thought the grubfather was hungry and ate his kids when I saw it.
The Grubfather could be doing a gastric-brooding frog, where after the babies have hatched the parent swallows them and they go into the stomach where they undergo metamorphosis for a little while before being vomited out fully formed. Either that or he does act as a cocoon. I think either way the grubs inside of him are going to become whatever a grubberfly is.
I think it’s also interesting to note that the charm you get is called “Grubberfly’s Elegy” which is a mourning poem, implying that the grubfather might die in the metamorphosis.
What if the grubs are in (I believe) a pupa stage and they metamorph into a new moth tribe? OR maybe they turn into those bugs that we saw in the silksong demo?
I thought this exact thing about the collector , I’m so glad someone else thought similarly. I thought the collector was trying to do what the hollow knight was tasked to do, which was to contain the radiance. Funnily enough, The Collector also ended up getting locked away in a building after doing so
Relyea: We haven't seen beetles except the dung defender. Old Stag, Willoh, Nailsmith, Bretta, Watcher Knights and every other beetle in the game: What the heck man.
Sorry I was late here is something that is not my comment. BTW I can't believe you didn't point out the obvious: notice the limbs on the grub on the grubberfly's elegy. Who do they resemble? And what insect do caterpillars also happen to metamorph into. And the charm also has HOLY power.
Theory, the gubfather quest is shortly after grubmother either passed away, or went away from grubfather, so the grubs are already almost able to metamorphizize but the collector doesnt want the grubs to, so he seperated them from their father. And the father just needs to keep them safe, so they have safetey in numbers. My theory is the collector wanted the grubs to hatch, then maybe keep them as companie, or sell them.
Hi Relyea, I don’t know when you’re gonna see this because you’re busy being a father and all but I just wanted to thank you for all the Hollow Knight content you’ve created, as I wouldn’t haven’t gotten far without your advice and tips (I watched your Hornet guide video a couple weeks ago and yesterday’s beat The Radiance with the help of your video) Love your mindset and attitude, and it’s safe to say you definitely deserve more recognition. Congrats on the new daughter and can’t wait to see what content is next.
Maybe the king just didn't want another higher being so he got the collector to collect them and hide them away so they dont. They might just turn into one. We know the king doesnt exactly like other higher beings
i think they turn into gruberflies or something and maybe thats why the charm it gives you is gruberfly's elegy, the true question is how did he had so many grubs
This I definitely not it but, theory: What if the collector is a good guy trying to hide the grubs from the grub father. It’s a stretch, but what if he knew that the father would eat them, (even though they are not dead) and we were not supposed to free the grubs cause he knew they would return to the father. When you walk in the room every time he looks sad, and eventually he got fed up with his kids and had a little meal.
Watching this made me think and I could be wrong here but I don't think the collector has anything passive in his collection other then the grubs and those are also the only ones he spred accros the map which makes you think, what if those are the most dangerous out of all of them, so much in fact that the collector separated them to keep the entire kingdom safe.
Tbh the gubberfly elegy symbol looks like the mothwing cloak symbol because the sign in city of tears before going to the royal waterway shows the same symbol of the beetle with wings which look’s honestly more like a scarab but I digress, they are all bugs so yeah…..
My theory is that The Collector is trying to save the grubs. Not from the Grub Father but from the infection. Think about it. The Grubs are the single largest settlement in the kingdom. If even one of them gets infected its game over for all of them. So making sure that not only are they safe (glass jars) but that they aren't near each other (hiding them away from each other) helps keep dozens of bugs alive to help ensure the future of the kingdom. Also they're little babies with the only one to protect them being and only grub who'd probably get owned by even early game enemies.
Maybe they don't turn in the radiance because they can't be moth, but instead they will be another kind of "higher being" cause beetles in the egyptian mitology are seen as sacred and there's also a god that has the form of a beetle, idk it would be cool to see another kind of god in HK
i see it as that instead of the grubs creating a cocoon they use the grub fathers body as such, and so allowing them to turn into grubberflys similar to the end of the guzz mother fight This is the nice way of seeing it though knowing team cherry he prob was just hungry, due to his weird laughing
I haven't found every grub (I saved roughly 90%), but i have accidentally seen the footage of what happens while watching some hk lore video and seeing the grub father STUFFED made me gasp for real. As for the reason he ate them, maybe he is just a prick :D i literally called my friend and started explaining what happens, screaming I PUT SO MUCH EFFORT INTO SAVING THEM JUST SO HE COULD EAT THEM. wow, this lockdown really makes me nervous :D
Well I actually think that your theory was very insightful, I like moss bag but I don't think he's as lighthearted and fun as you are. The ending did make me laugh though, I hope you keep doing these when ever you feel the need :)
what if theyre actually combining into one while going through metamorphasis so that when they come out itll just be one radiance instead of a bunch of them, this would also make more sense because the radiance is super strong and the grubs arent so they would need to fuse all of their energy together in order to reach that of the radiance
Alright so, a few issues here. 1. The only examples of several higher beings is with Wyrms, and the vessels. All the other higher beings are singular (nightmare heart, *the* radiance, etc.) 2. Moths are unique, being created by the radiance, similar to the mosskim who were dreamt into existence by Unn 3. Holy doesn't equate to higher being, and even then, the most frequent term for 2 higher beings is pale (pk/wl) 4. The collector is a void being, imprinted with a will. While with the love key bug who was the former love tower resident and collector of many of the jarred creatures, exposure to the collector who is void killed them, and somehow their mind got transferred to the collector. The collector seems to be quite..twisted (laughs, the music) which could'be distorted the love key bug's original mind to be focused only on grubs.
I believe the second theory. I imagine the Grubfather acts like a cocoon but instead of the grubs bursting out of him, when they metamorphosis they fly out of his mouth one by one and that Grubfather happily dies of old age.
I thought that this was supposed to be a dark joke that the grubfather just wanted to eat his own kids. Now I am happy that grubfather will be their willing cocoon and sacrifice himself for his children.
The father grub gave us 2 charms, 4000 geo, and proceeds to save the rest of his species, sacrificing himself in the process. What. A. Legend.

Also thank you for mentioning the theory that Grubfather ate them to help them transform 'cause that makes me feel a lot better than if he just... you know... ate them 😨
Relyea's channel just became
Game Theory
Ahh shucks, I’m nowhere near that good. And I don’t have even 1/10 the editing
For everyone getting angry at TC for no Silksong news and slow development. It’s understandable but you have to remember there is only 3/4 people in Team Cherry.
If you ask me I think they should hire Modders with programming experience and who are easy to work with and have a team of at least 10 people for faster development.
I am not upset they are taking a while. I’m rooting them on and excited for their final product
I'm surprised TC did not hire extra people for the sequel
Toby Fox has gotten help creating Delta Rune a sequel to one of the best indie games alongside Hollow Knight and Shovel Knight
Knight would easily beat Shovel Knight and Frisk
Maybe he turns I to a crawlid or a tiktik? Since those are kinda like beetles too? I don't really know I just thought the grubfather was hungry and ate his kids when I saw it.
The Grubfather could be doing a gastric-brooding frog, where after the babies have hatched the parent swallows them and they go into the stomach where they undergo metamorphosis for a little while before being vomited out fully formed. Either that or he does act as a cocoon. I think either way the grubs inside of him are going to become whatever a grubberfly is.
I originally thaught that he ate them and thats why he was giving us rewards.
But why doesn’t the grub father get to metamorphosis??
Relyea good point
Imagine if in silksong you fight 46 radiances at once
LOL!
I love the way you end the video.
Total honesty is so rare
I thought this exact thing about the collector , I’m so glad someone else thought similarly. I thought the collector was trying to do what the hollow knight was tasked to do, which was to contain the radiance. Funnily enough, The Collector also ended up getting locked away in a building after doing so
I got all the grubs but never went back there after and just saw this
Relyea: We haven't seen beetles except the dung defender.
Old Stag, Willoh, Nailsmith, Bretta, Watcher Knights and every other beetle in the game: What the heck man.
Maybe Relyea have been infected by Radiance, there's no other explanation to his memory.
Sorry I was late here is something that is not my comment. BTW I can't believe you didn't point out the obvious: notice the limbs on the grub on the grubberfly's elegy. Who do they resemble? And what insect do caterpillars also happen to metamorph into. And the charm also has HOLY power.
Before the mad comments come at me I hadn’t watch the full video
They are grubs, grubs metamorphosis into beetles
Sorry dude I didn’t mean it
MY THEORY: think the collector is trying to seperate bugs to slow down the infection
Social distancing huh?

If you dreamnail them they say "happy happy happy"
Mossbag's video talked about a similar topic, still, it's pretty interesting hearing your theory on this topic
I appreciate it
You got in touch with MOSSBAG? Whaaaat?
He’s on Twitter, I’m on Twitter. It’s a crazy place
I don't know about that MOSSBAG. I only know mossbag.
Nice video! I'm glad you started doing lore videos!
Not sure how many more I will do
When i used the dream sword on the fat papa grub he didnt say any of those things ... He just kept saying (or thinking actually) happy...happy...happy
Rel-wha? RELYEA!!
Rel-wha? RELYEA!!
Rel-wha? RELYEA!!
I read this like a team chant
Relyea: "We've never really seen beetles before in Hollow Knight"
Nailsmith: *Sad nailsmith noises*
I’m willing to accept any explanation other than he just ate all of them in cold blood because man that’s a huge bummer
Maybe the collector is a kingsmould, as you said, but he thinks the only way to save the kingdom is to preserve any living thing it can.
The grubberfly and the hallownest seal look way too similar to me
Thank you for the awesome videos! your our favorite youtuber and motivated us to make videos! thank you!
Ayo just came back to update this comment cus ya boy just beat absolute radiance WOOOOO
you are the first streamer that i actually enjoy watching (i always watch 'no commentary' gameplay). but your content is great! thank you.
Thank you my friend. I really appreciate it
Maybe the king just didn't want another higher being so he got the collector to collect them and hide them away so they dont. They might just turn into one. We know the king doesnt exactly like other higher beings
Just when I thought I finished the whole game… there are still so much yet to see
i think they turn into gruberflies or something and maybe thats why the charm it gives you is gruberfly's elegy, the true question is how did he had so many grubs
Someone's kids: is stolen.
Relyea: What's his deal???
I heard some whee that he might be acting like a caving for his kids so that they can mature safely
This I definitely not it but, theory:
What if the collector is a good guy trying to hide the grubs from the grub father. It’s a stretch, but what if he knew that the father would eat them, (even though they are not dead) and we were not supposed to free the grubs cause he knew they would return to the father. When you walk in the room every time he looks sad, and eventually he got fed up with his kids and had a little meal.
A possible theory
Nobody:
Relyea: grub are Radiances
Bro. You were as good as mossbag. I love your videos. Keep it up, big boss.
I did not just go searching around for all these cute grub just to see them get eaten...
Maybe they don't turn in the radiance because they can't be moth, but instead they will be another kind of "higher being" cause beetles in the egyptian mitology are seen as sacred and there's also a god that has the form of a beetle, idk it would be cool to see another kind of god in HK
i see it as that instead of the grubs creating a cocoon they use the grub fathers body as such, and so allowing them to turn into grubberflys similar to the end of the guzz mother fight
This is the nice way of seeing it though knowing team cherry he prob was just hungry, due to his weird laughing
I think the lockdown is getting to us all
I think we're gonna be seeing their full transformation in "Silksong" it's gonna be awesome, maybe they'll help Hornet in some way.😮
that would be awesome!
@@RelyeaGaming Heel 👠 yeah!!🤘
When your going to make a joke that the grubs turn into radiance and then you hear him say “maybe they turn into radiance”
All the other higher beings are singular (nightmare heart, *the* radiance, etc.)
2. Moths are unique, being created by the radiance, similar to the mosskim who were dreamt into existence by Unn
3. Holy doesn't equate to higher being, and even then, the most frequent term for 2 higher beings is pale (pk/wl)
Relyea is like are there any beetles completely ignores nailsmith
I feel as though team cherrie just wants us to over think a lot of things just to throw us off
I think he only swallowed them for them to have a warm and safe place to hatch
