I have the Big Agnes Tiger Wall 2 tent which I mostly love except the yellow color seems to attract insects. If I set my tent up during the day by the time I am ready for bed there will be flies and other buzzing insects between the top of the tent body and the rain fly which they can't seem to escape. I generally have to pull the rain fly half way off to get them out.

Bryce, really sorry to hear about your back issue. I too had a herniated disc in March of 2022 and was unable to do much for about 6 months. It slowly got better with the help of spinal decompression therapy and chiropractic. Was considering surgery but it doesn't appear to be necessary now. My dad had the same back surgery and he's totally fine now, best of luck.

The only UL rain jackets that work all have one thing in common: They use GTX Shakedry.
Everything else has been performing badly IMO whilst my TNF HyperAir Shakedry jacket is on its fourth year of use and never wetted out - even in challenging alpine environments.

Having had surgery for two ruptured disc. I know how painful it is.
Good luck on your surgery and recovery. If pain continues look into radio frequency abrasion. It was the best thing I could have done. I have been a police officer for 23 years and thought I was going to have to call it quits until I did the radio frequency abrasion. Pray for a speedy recovery and more of your videos.

Sucks to hear about your back, but thanks for sharing! I shot my legs to shit this year and am currently doing rehab by swimming bla bla, trying to get it together for a one month thru this summer, will absolutely lose my shit if it doesn’t work out because I’ve been planning it for two whole years. Just nice to see I’m not the only one who’s frustrated and stumbling around like a grandma/grandpa atm. Fingers crossed for your surgery and a speedy recovery!

I know you’re not looking for sympathy so I’ll blame your back issues on all the UL gear you’ve been using. Had you used heavier stuff with a base weight of 40 lbs you would have had a stronger back and been fine. So Kidding . Feel better.

Is there no end to the jealosy/fear of that which a person doesnt understand? When older, the skeptics will appreciate going lighter. They may also be embarrassed about their years of never ending skepticism. Oh wait, I think maybe you’re kidding so…never mind. See you on the trail.

  • @memathews

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the gear. Also, thanks for mentioning you're 5'8" so I can relate to sizes, weights, space. I'm 6'3", so everything weighs a bit more, fits a bit different, etc., especially since my torso is a medium and my limbs are where my height is (36" inseam and sleeve).
On your Uberlight, is the loss of volume actually leaking through the thin fabric or is it the cooling off of your breath blowing it up? I've got a heavier pad and blow it up to rigidly tight, but an hour or so later it's lost volume to become cushy. Also, 100% agree on lightweight rain jackets, always a disappointment in a full day of rain.
Back pain is terrible, almost as bad as mouth pain. You're motivated, you'll beat the pain and the issue.

Agree with you on UL rain jackets. I love my XL Frogg Toggs - cheap, breathes okish, covers my pack, doesn’t wet out (although I might get wet from sweat). People say they’re too fragile, but I’ve never ripped one despite lots of bushwhacking, as long as you don’t count me stupidly ripping my thumb through the cuff trying to take it off too fast. 😂 Nothing a little duct tape can’t fix. Good luck with the surgery!

Its so funny you say yoir Uberlite does not hold air and you like it. The pad not losing air. Mine did the same thing. Needed to be reinflated 2x in the night but it was THE best sleep I have ever had in the backcountry. The gummies might have helped. 😬My small uber holds air but who wants to sleep on that tiny thing!?😂😂. It is just uber cool bc it is uber small packed

Would be interested in a video with a more in depth review of BA Fly Creek tent if you felt up for it. I think it is an interesting tent and one of the lightest double wall nearly freestanding tents out there. But it has a bit of a reputation for not doing well and windy or sustained wet weather. Curious to hear more about your experience with his tent. Best of luck with your back.

It isn't "ultralight rain gear" that is the problem, it's "waterproof-breathable" rain gear that is neither.
Frogg Toggs is light and bulletproof. Well, except for bushwhacking. But, on-trail, it won't let you down.
That said, ponchos with full-length front zippers are a better solution than any jacket (which gets pressed against your back by your pack.

  • @cadcock15

Trying to get back into backpacking. Haven't gone since i was in boy scouts. Im not here to share sympathy with you but i do relate to back problems. Ive got scoliosis and its been causing me a ton of discomfort and problems for many years. But im going to try to go in the next couple weeks if the rain will stay away long enough. Dont have any ultralight gear. Probably going to end up with a base weight of like 15lbs. Went out today for a couple miles with a 30lb load as a worst case scenario and its tough but i think i can do it. Hiking poles seem to help. If i can get in a 3 day trip under 25lb total pack weight and survive my trip and want to do more im going to look at getting myself some ultralight gear.

Suffer spinal injuries myself, disc herniation and bulged discs in my lower lumbar region. Have dealt with pain that, on a good day, could suck the life force right out of you... I was a candidate for surgery... I haven't done it... And it's been years. It was a long path to finding a path to a nearly pain-free existence without drugs or surgery, but it is possible. Your medical treatment is between you and your doctor, but I recommend exhausting EVERY option you can. Get second, third, even fourth opinions. Surgeons are in the business of surgery, not wellness. Surgery might be the faster path, but might not be the better one. Really depends on your own case.
I know this is unsolicited. YT "expert" advice, but from one human being to another, don't let pain and frustration drive a decision that will have lasting ramifications. For every person I've encountered that says back surgery is the best thing they have ever done, there was one who had an adverse experience (my n of about a dozen people - super scientific I know). It is simply an interesting ratio and gave me pause before diving into surgery. I haven't closed the door on it, but thought at a younger age, I would give my body the option to heal through rest, low impact exercise, and PT. I went from the need for narcotics daily to needing advil every 4-6 weeks on a "bad" day. Maintaining core and leg strength has been critical. Perhaps as muscle mass naturally reduces with age, surgery might be back on the table, but I think I made the right choice.
I know you're frustrated being held back from the things you love. You're still young, could you temporarily redirect that passion while your body heals? It's worth a conversation with your doctor... It may turn out that surgery IS the right option, just suggesting you challenge the treatment with questions. The American medical system can be like a cattle farm at times...
Whatever you do, I hope you find relief, I truly empathize with your situation, it's terrible!

Hang on, did you say the uberlight isn't deflating as much when the ground isn't as cold?
Are you inflating it directly, mouth-to-valve?
If so, it might just be the air cooling and compressing inside it overnight, rather than it actually leaking. Try using a pumpsack maybe? Or being a proper numpty like me and use a little battery pump.

    Always good to go ultralight
But then again I tended you comfortable it's not the lightest not the heaviest and the bike takes most of it
Maybe this year you should try your hand after the surgery of course and you're healed up just maybe and that is a very huge just maybe you should try your hand at light duty bike packing for one you're not carrying anything except for maybe a little bit of water and two you don't have to go very far just enough to get to your woods that's your mom and dad owns I would say that be about perfect stepping stone
