Speaking as someone who’s first job was in a brass/bronze/aluminum foundry casting mostly ship and boat fittings as well as coming from a family on both sides of machinists, millwrights and engineers with more than a little knowledge of metallurgy and engines, machining and tooling there is no centrifugal casting going on here. It’s straight sand casting and machining.
I too have some concern about the quality of the melt but obviously they make a lot of liners and must have a decent quality or they would be out of business. I am sure there are some variations in the melts but they likely have a decent working knowledge of how much of this scrap and that scrap is correct for the results they need. They can break them out fairly hot as they require a fair amount of post casting machining and their mix is likely a bit like chilled iron/steel.

@@LegendLength actually almost all piston sleeves are made of cast iron, as are most older engine blocks. Quality cast iron, in piston sleeves often called chilled iron, is very tough and somewhat mailable. Also it has a decent stability as far as expansion and contraction. It’s also a tad porous, just a bit so it absorbs a bit of oil into the surface which helps the rings last better. It also forms micro carbides as it cools and they add wear resistance. It makes ideal cylinders/liners for anything from small engines to huge diesels and all the piston aircraft from flat fours and sixes to V-12s and the huge radials. Depending on the formation of cast iron it can be hard and brittle all the way to tough and durable often used in vise’s, anvils, brake drums, rotors and calipers and most machines like lathe’s, mills etc. In the early years even complete bridges have been made of cast iron and some still exist.

A friend of mine had Enfield India Motorcycles (the original one) and ordered replacement parts for it from India.
I can guarantee that the cylinder liner wall thicknes was constant within + - 5 mm on most of the cylinders.
On one of the cylinders the bore was so offset to one side that it was impossible to mount, so he asked an Indian mechanic what to do, and the usual solution is to grind off a little from the inside of the piston so it can match the offset on the connecting pin.
That's a perfectly acceptable solution in India

Where was the centrifugal casting I didn't see any. Firstly my concern is scrap steel going into the furnace, scrap that varied immensely in quality so there could be no consistency in the quality of their product. Second, those castings are being broken open long before the metal is allowed to cool , which again is detrimental to the product and dangerous to the men who have no protective clothing or footwear . As for throwing poorly machined parts onto the ground in all that dirt and dust expecting an end user to build a quality engine with them is insane.

There wasn't any I agree. But that isn't steel it is cast iron. Seems to machine quite freely nothing wrong there. Rough turning followed by grinding. Looks like a reasonable product. I wouldn't say they are poorly machined. Remember the machining is just a rough process - it is the grinding that gives the accuracy and surface finish.

@@codprawn in the US, some of the best lathes ever made and are still running were built during World War 2 almost 80 years ago. They made them by the hundreds for the big guys and thousands for the small ones. No CNC in sight but they were very good production machines. Good examples are sought after and bring good prices. Of course, they are nothing compared to today’s pieces but they sure did win the war.m

The lathe center is wobbling, that means the center bore will not be concentric to the outside diameter. Looks nice turning in the lathe but if you were to measure the wall thickness around the liner, you would find differing numbers.

I’m wondering if these people buy *everything* those over them in the Dominance Hierarchy deign to *sell* them, i.e. “my Betters have told me a certain thing, and *because it came from my BETTERS, IT. MUST. BE. TRUE.”*

The title is wrong as there was no centrifugal casting with the process shown,It was just standard casting! Centrifugal casting involves spinning the mould so the molten metal is thrown to the outer edge with centrifugal force!
