Smart Roadster Roof Disassembly by Kane from evilution.co.uk

  • Back in 2004, a video was leaked from smart. It showed the technicians how to changed the sliders and cables in the smart Roadster roof. Being early 2000's, it was filmed on a potato, so although it was informative, you couldn't actually see what was going on.
I decided to make my own version. In a far higher resolution but much less informative.
I swear that this was supposed to be sensible but as most things, It didn't stay sensible for long. Now it's just a piss-take of the original video by smart. The "smart" guy had dodgy hair. I don't have hair so had to buy a moustache instead.

Thanks, i had a problem that the side bar wasn't good attached, so the roof stuck, "pull" the side bar out...first part fell out (with the spring) and a part broke off....now i fixed it with some loctite and thanks to your good idea of the carton, my roof is working again!! 🙂

This is brilliant - love the under-the-breath comments! I was having a nightmare with the roof but this video really made my day! Now I'm just watching again it for the laughs!
(Very well filmed and edited too - congratulations!)

my motor gear is skipping instead of motor stopping when roof closes fully.
Is there a end-stop switch anywhere, or how else does it know when roof is fully open or closed?
Also do you need to align both sides somehow?

The car monitors the power usage of the roof motor. When the motor stalls because it has reached the end of the travel, the car cuts the power.
If it's skipping, the cog is worn.

You can align the roof by removing the motor, manually straightening the roof and refitting the motor.

Hi Sir, is there a way to convert it to manual operated soft roof, securing rear scissors hooks and front hooks?
Do older 45 kw 452s have non electric operated soft roof?
    Thank you in advance.

All Roadsters are electric operated roofs. You could make something and swap the motor for a handle. The spring cables that are pulled by the motor are what lock and unlock the roof so you can't make it manual like the old 1960's cars where you pull the roof back by hand.

As you can't buy them, I have 3D-printed some of these plastic sliders. Used them in my car for over a year now, works great.
Will probably print some other ones.

Just this minute finished doing all the above, I would have surely fu**ed up and end up botching it without your really good video. And i lost the fu**en spring !! found it later tho. another tip i found from another vid is if the plastic spring is broken take off the support clip metal piece as well as they get jammed up and scrape the channel badly. Also used pieces of flexible plastic strips to replace the unobtainable smart clips and tied them to the strut seems to be fine. adios.
