Mike, your engineering abilities, the guts you have to tackle projects most of us would say were impossible (yet you make look easy), starting with a clean sheet and designing something this robust yet simple, makes you a rock star in my book. I keep going back in my mind to the overall build, somehow you manage to get the CG just right. That in itself is a feat of elephantine proportions.
Mike, this is a better series than the Scrappy build! That one was way to long. Draco is still my favorite and I'm waiting for Draco X! Have a good one!
That was an interesting design of the nose gear, you are always coming up with new and innovative ways of doing things. As a aircraft mechanic, I really admire that. Keep up the good work Mike.
Mike is exceptionally smart, highly motivated and always doing something that pushes the edge of the envelope. Aeronautical genus, keep them coming Mike!
Mike Patey ... Imaginative, outside the box thinking, coupled with excellent and creative engineering and fabrication skills ... I'm always gobsmacked at whatever you do
Turbulence is incredible. PLEASE don't forget the house. I as hooked on that series as much as DRACO & SCRAPPY!! Always looking forward to your videos. OSHKOSH TOO. Safe travels.
😂 I have to admit I almost pulled that clip in edit, then 🤷♂️😂 what the heck, it’s just me. It’s what I did this time on a non high press fit bearings needing a love tap to sneak in. Also a bushing I did the same. Press is the way to go. This bearing turns a quarter turn only during swing, I could have just used a bushing. Oh also I use claw hammers to build planes 🤪 grew up as a framer, love hammers since I could crawl. How about this for a video warning??, “Do not do this at home, may cause cancer or a smashed finger, use a press”. Love the comment ❤️ thanks for following this knucklehead. Your the best.
@@MikePatey now I’m about 40% smarter that you replied! Don’t worry I just ordered a brand new claw hammer 😂. Nah man jk I love the work! I’m knee deep in cad and 3D printing all because of you man. Thanks for the inspiration!
@@mertonallowicious😂 I am curious what happened to the first one 🤷♂️ my friend Josh does the videos and releases now and I didn’t know it got uploaded again until I read it in these comments. I’ll ask him Monday. My guess is upload problems or sound or weird stuff is usually why we do it again. No idea 🤷♂️
When it’s not been done before it’s a Mike Patey path to realization. Imagine the impossible into existence. Very satisfying watching the birth of beast mode plane parts working as designed.
I don't know who first said that Mike's real hobby was sanding and he just makes airplanes as an excuse to do more sanding, but I was not disappointed by the amount of sanding in the construction of Turbulence. The carbon fiber was a gimme but the thickness of the anodising was bonus.
Is that why he makes enormous custom, mirror smooth carbon fibre cowls for his planes, to get more more sanding in? 😀 I can see it, Mike leads a busy, hectic lifestyle. A bit of quiet sanding at the end of the day would be almost meditative.
Dude, you are so positive and motivated. I wish I had some of your bottomless enthusiasm. Can you make a video that tells me how I can live like you. You are a legend sir. Respect.
Mike, I’m struggling through a massive construction project right now, without much help. Some days, watching your videos make me feel utterly unqualified to keep going, due to the fact that I don’t have the in-depth knowledge to solve all of the problems I encounter. However, I always end up coming back and watching your endless work ethic and it inspires me to GET BACK TO WORK. Thank you for sharing the incredible work you do with all of us online, you have a more profound effect on people than you may know!
Thats an almost perfectly true comment. For a very good reason. Mike has the knowledge to be able to foresee all (but in Mikes mind its, HOPEFULLY all) the possible problems that enable the flow of the designs. Without foreseeing all the possible problems, the design will be flawed. Public hardly ever have the ability to watch Mikes vodeos and be a step ahead in our minds, because they cant see the potential problems looming up at the designs. So when a designed part is built and it works, that evidences for Mike that he didnt unforsee any of the foreseable problems. Thats an adrenaline rush that makes great people deservedly pleased to be who they are. Its called self esteam. That is exactly what stops otherwise justified "self confidence", from entering the slippery slope down to stupidity. Some people will measure, cut, and measure again to check upon their own skills and tool quality etc. Others simply measure and cut and bash it into place (if they bother to measure). Mike is simply in the former measure cut measure group.
One lesson from the Gimli Glider was that it can be advantageous to have the nose gear drop into the wind, as opposed to pushing forward against it. Of course in this case, it would have moved the gear back, decreasing the directional stability that you mentioned. So, best not run out of fuel over Manitoba. 🙂
Mike over the years you have totally changed and improved with novel and new ideas a number of aircraft designs made by other designers. I am very impressed, you did the right thing not licensing the nose gear design. Giving it out for all to use was very kind and says a lot about you as a person, you are a stand up guy. Small fish like me appreciate what you did.
There are two words that impress the hell out of me in this video: "... absolutely not..." ...RESPECT - when asked by a commercial entity if they could licence your design and you used those two words while giving free access to video and supporting material, that demonstrates passion and a true love for design and innovation. I work in a totally different environment (extreme offshore kayak fishing) but gain so much from your philosophy of safety and sharing... ...love your work, thank you !!!
I would just like to say, You are an inspiration. As a car builder and a pilot, I really admire the hours and the thought you put into everything you do. I admire the motivation you keep and the positive attitude you have! Turbulence is my airplane of yours and I’m thrilled to see these videos. I absolutely love your house build videos, and all of your other stuff as well. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos!
It was very gratifying to hear that there are other planes using your landing gear. I build race cars and always struggle to justify to myself the time spent designing one off parts that won't benefit anyone else.
Mike, I really enjoy the videos of the work you do in creating, designing and building totally unique parts of the experimental aircraft you build. Thanks
Will we ever get a long-form sit-down interview with Ron telling his story? Ron really is the secret weapon behind these builds and I would love hearing from him, and yes, including the mistakes he has made. I think most people here won't see him as the sum of his mistakes, but as the man who overcame them. Please, Ron, tell your story.
