Fun fact: pay attention to the floating mirrors and you'll notice Omori is the only one out of the group that actually has a reflection as you walk past it. Its purpose is a very subtle reminder that none of the comfort you find when you interact with it is real - there's a small chance for that reminder not to be so subtle when you do.

One of the coolest things about Omori is once you finish the game, replaying it with the knowledge of the ending completely changes your view on the entire gameplay! There are so many clues everywhere.
Also, Omori, Aubrey, Kel, and Basil are all roughly 12 while Hero and Mari are about 15, just so you know!

@2:00 This, then, is the pure *GENIUS* of Omocat. Yes, this game is utterly *STUFFED* full of Chekhov's Guns. You're right to question EVERYTHING. Absolutely Everything you see might or might not have significance, leaning a bit more towards the former. The game, especially Headspace, is absolutely stuffed full of allegory and metaphors. Those who pay attention and actually think about what they are seeing and why, will come to realize certain things much sooner than those who are just blindly stumbling through.

I like how you break down Hero's big character flaw.
Being caring, peaceful and harmonious is great! But there is a point where any positive trait has its downsides. Being caring to the point where they don't care for themselves, trying to be peaceful with a person who can't be reasoned with or trying to accommodate a person who is really toxic.
Hero's fear of rejection, criticism or embarrassment is huge. Of course, this makes him a pleasure to be around but it hurts him in the long run.

  • @matttale7918

I’d say that people pleasing is definitely a big part of Hero’s character!
A large part of the game with Hero as focus shows that he is more often focused on helping others and being there for his friends while ignoring / downplaying his own feelings and hurt.

The measures Omori is taking are getting more and more extreme in the course of the game. At first Basil just disappears, but that's not enough, so the dream is starting to create distractions (helping Captain Spaceboyfriend) and when that isn't enough either, Omori and his friends are literally thrown into jail cause that's a place you're not supposed to escape from (which would mean that they won't find Basil).

I am a people pleaser, to the point where I don't like starting relationships because I'm afraid of disappointing them. I'm not sociable and can't engage in conversations or interactions with people I don't know, and with the people I do know, I try not to unload my baggage onto them. I desperately want to connect with someone on a deep level, but I am afraid of disappointing someone I could have made happy with my silence. It's something I've been working on with my therapist but cuz of the covids and it being summer, I can't get out and meet new people, or I just procrastinate. It's why I love OMORI so much, its a game with powerful topic about social anxiety, self-isolation, many other spoilery issues I relate to, and a fear of hurting people we care about.

Reminder to water Basil's flowers whenever you're in that area. Wouldn't be a bad idea to drop by when you're at a Pluto station.
Also, just some battle strategy advice: I find that giving all your friends the emotion that's strong against the foe's emotion is usually more effective than giving each friend an emotion that boosts one of their skills. Having the emotion advantage against a foe boosts your damage against them (including damage from your skills) while also reducing their damage to you. So for instance, a happy foe will be much less dangerous if all your friends are sad, but angry friends would be in trouble.

People-pleasing was something I struggled with a lot as a kid. I had very few friends and desperately wanted people to like me, so I thought granting favors again and again without asking for anything in return would have helped. Doing others' work, giving money, fetching and delivering things, being the goalie during P.E., accepting undesirable roles in school plays, etc. It took me way too long to realize the only time my classmates ever talked to me was when they needed something from me. The first time I said "no" to someone was probably the most cathartic thing I'd ever done up to that point.
I've always liked Hero, but seeing him have the same struggles I did made me absolutely adore him. What a phenomenal game.

About people pleasing... I consider myself to have been doing it for a long time. When my family asked how i was, i always said the same thing "i'm good", never really speaking about my problems, doubts, and insecurities because of fear of letting them down. Even some times lying about little things so that they would feel proud. Over time it made me feel really lonely and separated from t hem. Hopefully, i'm starting to connect with them and explore myself outside of my inner world.
To do people pleasing for me it was denying myself the chance to make mistakes, i made them proud with my achievements and responsibility, but i never grew accustomed to err, so now i have a really hard time not putting high expectations on myself, and feel like i always have to do something useful for someone and make sure that it is of the highest quality.
Sorry for venting, but sharing my experience could help people feel more comfortable sharing their stories too, and i'm always curious how other people experience this things that i have been feeling for a long time. Perhaps i could learn a little, or just feel more understood.

When I was in residential my behavioral specialist made me do a ton of exposures. I also had people pleasing as one of my bans (I had to mark a check in my ban book every time I noticed myself doing it).
Being assertive is hard and it can be pretty scary, we don’t want to make people sad or angry. Still, it’s not our job/responsibility to make sure _everyone_ is happy _all the time._ Like you said, we are not in control of others emotions.
It’s important to look out for ourselves. “Do I feel safe?”, “Is this person trustworthy?”, “Am sacrificing what I care about by saying yes?”.

  • @L0V3V4MP1R3
    @L0V3V4MP1R3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

On people pleasing, from a person who'd do it extensively on high school period:
Although it is true that I began doing it to attempt preventing people close to me from feeling upset/sad or to comfort them, it'd quickly spiral out of control in my head where I'd think that now that I've been acting in a specific way, stopping being a yes-man for these people would break the perception of me that I thought I gave those people, and so make them think I was being two-faced or that I simply didn't care anymore/cared less about them. And so I'd continue to do it out of an unfounded belief that people would be turned away from me because I wasn't "being nice anymore" or that I'd hurt people going through difficult times by stopping being a "comfort zone" for them (which in retrospect, this mindset probably did much more damage than actually help them).
I've since grew out of this, but I think it's important to keep in mind that this mindset will not only create a self-perpetuating spiral (You keep acting a certain way because you think people are used to you acting this way, so you don't want to disappoint them. But that only lets the situation escalate further, and the impact of when you _actually_ decide/is forced to stop is muuuch worse than what it would've been at first, if at all), but bending yourself backwards to do the biddings of a friend in a precarious emotional state can easily slip into toxic relationships and create a lot of dependency that _will_ hurt them once you have to stop acting that way (and yes, it will eventually happen).

It basically houses an entity whose purpose is the inverse of the castle keeper found within sweethearts' castle. Even more interesting, since they both even kind of share design elements to a small extent.
While keeper kind of tries to incentivize Sunny to fall further into delusions with promises (which can't be acted on outside of the other route), the entity in the forest kind of states hard facts in the form of riddles and somewhat speaks directly to Sunny in a manner similar to characters deeper in the subconscious.

People pleasing is haunting and strenghtens itself pretty easily like at 1:08:58. It makes one realize they must have something "wrong" in them that irks people when they actually try something because when others do it, they don't get an emotional turmoil in return or at least, as hard.
Eventually, it can break someone, shut them away from others or emotionally erupt as others' expectations keep increasing more and more and they self-bury themselves deeper and deeper.

  • @inspirationwithnoexpiratio629

I actually used to be a people pleaser a few years back and I still struggle with it today.
It has a bit to do with my background and the friends I had, but I was convinced I was selfish and I needed to be less selfish as a way to prove I wasn't. Because in my mind back then, being selfish meant I myself was a bad person who didn't care about others.
Which now I don't believe anymore. And I personally think people need to stop using the word "selfish" as this horrible nasty thing. Because that's just telling people that putting yourself first is a horrible thing when really it's a natural thing because all humans need to put themselves first to survive.
And yes being kind to people and helping others is a good thing too and you should do that. But there's this saying that sums it up perfectly. "You can't pour an empty glass" just like how You can't help others if you yourself needs help.
So this goes to anyone out there reading this. Don't be afraid to be a little selfish and take time for yourself. If you put yourself first the rest of the world will follow.

You're definitely right on the money with Hero putting others' feelings before his own. It's an aspect of his character that I like seeing again and again throughout the game; same with the rest of the friend group and their personalities! Also, it's something that I'm sure was worsened by real-life events (i.e. that "trauma" you mentioned, which is pretty much shared by the whole friend group). But you haven't learned much about that, yet.
Actually, you talking about people-pleasing and how there are times to be assertive made me think about an episode of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, where Wilt (a really nice guy who's similar to Hero in that he can't bring himself to refuse anything from anyone, for fear of upsetting them) finally gets tired of people walking all over him and learns to say "no". It's a pretty big moment, too.
As always, it's great hearing your thoughts on the game and its colorful cast of characters! Gets me to do a bit of self-reflecting, too, so that's kinda fun, lol.

1:14:00 I have a friend who is a people pleaser. I can agree that it is a bad thing, but I also really admire it.
I have pddnos, which makes social interactions very difficult for me, mostly because I have a lot of trouble with keeping someone else's needs in mind. For a very long time (mostly during high school), instead of trying to live with that, I chose to ignore it and become extremely introverted.
However, I eventually started trying again, and this is where I first met that friend. I was really afraid that I would mess up something everytime I tried to talk to them because of the social anxiety I developed by ignoring my issues. Things went fine however and soon enough I had what I thought was a good friend, like I have had in the past a couple of times.
One day after school we were walking towards the train/bus station, and we were having a nice conversation, although it was quite biased towards my interests as is most of the time. I have grown used to the fact that many people are not particularly interested in the stuff I talk about. I had to take the bus and she took the train, so naturally when we arrived at the gates for the train station I expected her to enter and wait for her train there. But instead, she kept talking with me and waited outside.
That had never happened to me before. For real. I have met no one up until then who enjoys talking with me so much that they prefer spending 5 more minutes talking with me rather than just leaving right away.
Now, she is probably the best friend I have ever had, and thanks to her I now have more friends than ever before, and no longer prefer staying inside by myself. And even though sometimes her sympathy and generosity make her take too much care of others and too little care of herself, I cannot help but be grateful for everything she has done for me. Very little people would have done the same.

People-pleasers also tend to be vulnerable to those who would use their emotions against them. For instance, someone who threatens self-harm to provoke a reaction. This creates the expectation that, if they don't stick around and try to please them, they'll seriously hurt themselves and it'll be their fault.

  • @blueglass24
    @blueglass24 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yeah, they totally nailed people-pleasing with Hero. I'm more than a bit of a people-pleaser myself, though being aware of that fact means I'm able to work on it (actually DOING that work is another matter entirely...).

I would think most people prefer longer videos for this game. In 25 minutes it doesn't feel like much progress has been made, and the excitement to see her progress and learn more diminishes a bit.
Of course though, I'd hate for her to get burned out!

If you manage to get past a spider-escaping section on the right side of one of the foggy forest areas, you can enter a secret lost forest area. You meet a character called Daddy Longlegs, it reveals more about Sunny's mind and how cracks are starting to form in the happy Headspace,,

Well, now I want to see a funny Junko / Sweetheart crossover comic.
Ah, people pleasing for me has been a survival mechanism, bc both my mom and stepmom are narcisits, both verbally & emotionally abusive, and the latter (whom I live with) is also physically abusive from time to time.
And even with the guide of a therapist that helped me respectfully assert my boundaries, she felt offended by my asking for privacy and respect. In the end, my therapist told me my solution is to move out. If only I had the money... :/

I really love your little therapist side-talks or whatever you wanna call them. They're really enlightening.
One of the things it made it reflect on is the fact that I have a bit of a selective people-pleasing tendency. At work, if someone tells me to do something that I really don't think is a good idea or don't want to do, like work unpaid overtime, I'll be quicker to put my foot down. However, I might have a stronger tendency than most to help a stranger in need. When it comes to people I really care about, though... I kinda put myself dead last. And I'm not even sure if that's a bad thing all the time, because it does make me happy to help my friends, and none of them are manipulative enough to make that a problem.
On a related note, one game you might check out after your Omori playthough is a game called "Say No More!", it goes a lot into this subject of people pleasing and the need to occasionally put your foot down. It's not a particularly long game, so you could easily do it in an episode or two.

I have always struggled with setting boundaries and putting myself before others (I was going to use the word "selfish" but that would be against the point here lol), so the whole thing was really relatable. Also how you pointed out that it is kinda a way we're trying to "control" other's emotions, I really never thought of it that way, and that is actually a good point tho.
Thanks for the talk, it was informative and a good hint for me to start working on addressing my problems

Anyway, I never really think about this before but it was really Sunny's fault that incident at the church happened. Kel was willing to wait until the sermon is over but Sunny wasn't. It was also game reasons that we had to get straight into the next part of the story but in-universe, Sunny didn't have time to wait. Not sure why though. Even Kel was shocked by Sunny's actions. Did Sunny really want that photo album away from Aubrey so badly? Idk. The fight was going to happen anyway regardless but disturbing the sermon was unnecessary. Would've been better to have that argument-turned-to-fight when everyone else has left the church (the priest was probably gonna stay there for a while longer). But yeah, Sunny kinda screwed that up a bit.

To get the all out attack the gauge has to be up to 10, which could go up to 1 with each hit from the enemy. Thing is, if you use the quote bubbles they use up 3 points, so if you want to get the attack, don't use the quotes.

I was GONNA say that talking about the people pleasing topic was gonna be a callout for my brother..... But then I remembered I was a people pleaser too- So... Uh... It's kinda hard.. to set or even ACKNOWLEDGE boundaries because, i throw that all away for the sake of my friends' happiness. Like, I'd bend over backwards, just to let them have what they want, to make them happy.
And I _know_ that they don't want me to! At all! They don't want me to people please, but it's really hard when you consider the "facts" which my anxiety tells me! If I don't hang out with them today they WILL be upset and lonely, _despite_ them saying it's fine and that I should focus on my work. So, even if they care about my boundaries by telling me it's okay, I _know_ they'll be feeling that way. Which I DON'T WANT! I don't anyone to feel that way, to be upset, when I know can control it! If I hang out with them instead of my school work or my classes, it'll make them happy!
So.... Yeah... I'd say I have a good reason for.... People pleasing....? Even though... EVERYONE says it's not a good thing exactly. I just want to make them happy, y'know? They deserve it, and if they're happy, I'm happy! So it's a win win?
