As a Messer fencer I feel your pain tho! One of my favourite tactics against longer weapons is to play a cat and mouse game trying bait the longer weapon user into performing a committed attack then I quickly move inside with bogen into ringen am schwert. Of course if the opponent is anywhere skilled this tactic will only work once then I proceed to get my ass kicked haha! A shorter weapon is still a shorter weapon. Although ,somewhat realistically, with swords you only need a technique to work once to incapacitate your opponent.
Very nice to watch and close to my own experience fencing against a longer / shorter weapon. It's cool to see that you already adapt during the fight, so I am sure your next fight will already be even better :) Thanks for the video and a happy new year to you!
Thank you Martin. Well, during the last three bouts I had a far better idea of what I wanted to achieve, while at the very beginning it was just "well, let's see what happens if..." I always prefer to approach things practically and then theorycraft on what I have personally experienced rather than the opposit. We will see if the next time I will face someone with a longer weapon I will remember what I've learned this time ;-) I wish you happy new year! Cheers
I went looking for sidesword sparring videos on youtube because my HEMA club starts off with a very generalized one handed class so students can decide from there what they want to get into and still have it translate well. I want to move on to steel and I am trying to decide what weapon is best suited to me, and so I want to look at all of the styles represented. I initially thought arming sword and then started to really consider side sword, which I hadn't really before as much. Stumbling on an arming sword vs sidesword video was great. I've watched a lot of other sidesword videos as well that were helpful, but seeing these styles side by side was particularly helpful. Although we are just using generic foam bofers, I feel like I already fight as though I'm wielding a sidesword, not an arming sword. My mind is still not entirely made up, it's a difficult decision. But I appreciate the video.
You did well considering your lack of length (😏). Another advantage for him was, his skill with the "off" hand. He clearly had better use of it. Thanks for video! I enjoy watching you spar, it helps mine.
sei stato molto gentile a non tranciargli quella manina che metteva dappertutto, come avesse una daga. con la spada da lato di meyer non mettiamo mai la mano. comunque bel duello!!
Nice videos Federico, I was wondering if it was Arming Sword & Buckler, vs. Sidesword, what would the dynamic be like? Could you do a sparring video on that one day?
Quite unusual technique of side sword, rather close to rapier. Your arming sword was fast and effective, especially taking into account the blade length difference. Good job! A real pleasure.
May I ask what pants your opponent is using. They don’t look like fencing pants they look more like work out pants that they pulled up to show the socks. They look comfortable as hell. Awesome fencing!
This was an interesting match up, thanks for sharing. My one significant observation is that I think you used the arming sword more like a sidesword than I would have expected. If you didn’t have to worry about the safety of your partner and their lighter sword, would you otherwise use stronger cuts or displacements? I feel the advantage of the arming sword is that kinetic energy and against a lighter weapon some of Fiore’s sword jn one hand would be useful. Anyhow, great content and I look forward to more.
Indes WMA thank you very much for the comment. Well what you say sounds quite idealistic. The sword that Fabio uses in this video is heavier, longer and with a quite forward PoB because was half a way between a civil sword and a war sword. So the kinetic energy developed during a cut is stronger. While my sword, short and agile, was good for taking the bind. Action that Fabio negated me as much as possible because he knows his stuff. The problem here is the reach. Having two Swordsman which haves almost the same skill level but 20/25 lesser cms in the blade is hard to compensate. Plus trying to put out a specific play to reach a fast conclusion may end up in a double, as in the video happens once or twice. And yes I use my arming sword like a sidesword because, safe for the need to present the hand fewer times as a possible target, this swords are almost the same. It’s possible a sidesword and an arming sword which feel the same in hand, as well as two arming swords which are completely different. Hope this answers your doubts.
No doubts on this side, just curious about the tactics you chose. Safety aside, I’d probably try strong beating attacks against his weak to displace the longer sword and get inside of his preferred measure or possibly strong hews that would be hard for a lighter sword to parry. But it sounds like his sidesword is heftier than I thought and he is a crafty fencer so I might end up walking right into his attack. : )
Indes WMA indeed, beating away the opponent sword is a very good way to control it. I do this plenty of times both in Longsword and Sword and buckler. Here the space to breach after the beat was far more than what I’m comfortable with, and of course the beat would may end up controlling the sword yes! But what about the most important step, the second one, attacking! Well, a compound attack takes more time than a simple one, and my opponent being in knowledge of my beat almost instantly. So I have to move forward for the aforementioned long distance plus maybe more, because he can retreat. He can even disengage and thrust me in tempo during my long run. If I approach him too close before the beat instead, he can directly attack me. So yes, beat and attack is a good idea as an action. In this context? Was hard as any other simple or compound offense to land. The best outcome I had in as when I provoked the correct attack from Fabio. Considering that I never fenced with this disadvantage in reach and that, as a tall guy, In general I’m the one with more reach, I’m quite happy of the results ;-) If you find time I would suggest to try it yourself! It’s interesting. Cheers and thank you.
Wonderful exchanges. I was thinking you should of been more aggressive and pushed to keep a closer measure, as you were at a serious disadvantage because of weapon length. Regardless, the fight was very fluid, respectful and a joy to watch. Happy New Year!!!
Here one can see that size matters ( ;) ). Although you defend well (as expected), your opponent is able to reach you without risk to himself. Do I understand that your hands were not a target? Going for zhogo stretto was really your best option, perhaps you should have "go for it" a little bit more. I like Fabio's sword. Where does it comes from?
pippohispano going for stretto was indeed the best choice, but sadly doing it offensively with this huge difference in length and with one handed sword (which can easily be retracted to thrust from the side) was most of the time a straight way for doubles. Anyway! Thank you very much for your words and Fabio’s sword is a Danelli Sidesword.
Truly some magnificent swordplay here, but if I may offer some constructive criticism: You seemed to play this fight very defensively, waiting for your friend to initiate. Whenever you did attack I saw a lot of thrusts that your friend parried with his offhand. As a sidesword person myself I like to initiate because I feel more in control. I don’t fight a lot of arming swords, but I do fight messers and basket hilt broadswords rather regularly, as that’s what a lot of the people in our club prefer. What I find to be the hardest to deal with is when they initiate with a cut and work from the bind. This brings me to my main point: I believe you could really benefit from using more cuts. With the length of your sword you have a serious disadvantage against a sidesword. So working your way into measure with a cut and working from the bind would put you in a position more suited to your weapon. I also noticed you attempted to grab the opponents blade a few times, and from a bind that is much easier. I mean no offence by offering this, I love your work and respect you highly. I think your skill with a longsword is stunning to say the least. I only saw something that I thought you could change to benefit you more. Hah, people have opinions on the internet, who knew?
