Came here after reading a chapter in “Desperate Journeys, Abandoned Souls,” a book about maroon stories. One was about a Miskito. The author, correcting a misconception of the Miskitos in the 1700s, stated:
“The Moskitos were a fierce and valiant race of warriors, acknowledged by the privateers to be skillful hunters, clever, scouts, and fearsome fighters. In a harsh, unforgiving land, they existed and prospered by their willingness to adapt and to absorb the customs and technologies of other nations. They changed in order to survive, but they never forsook their identity. They might adapt, but they never surrendered. They might absorb, but they refused to be absorbed. They would remain distinct and proud in the home of their ancestors. To this very day.”
