Yes, it'll show the photo immediately afterwards for a quick check, and you can of course press play at any point to take a more leisurely look and zoom-in on the details. You should be able to do all this with any digital camera though...
Three questions there! DSLR sensors are more sensitive than most compacts because they have a larger surface area. The mirror is there in a DSLR to bounce light into the optical viewfinder, but it's not needed for Live View (unless you do it like Sony). Some DSLR sensors can overheat if exposed for too long, which is why most Live View modes have limited times. Obviously this needs to be addressed for decent video recording times on future models. Feel free to ask more on the cameralabs forums!
@LachlanMcBride The Nikon D3000 is slightly friendlier, but the Canon has live view which lets you alternatively compose with the screen. Get whichever is more important to you personally...
Hi kelvov, the optical viewfinder can actually give a better impression of depth of field using the depth of field preview button on the camera. The image will temporarily appear darker through the viewfinder at small apertures, but you'll see exactly what will be sharp. Check out the best buys section at cameralabs . com and feel free to ask any other Qs on the cameralabs forums...
@tubehubing Thanks! I don't know about Ozzie prices, but the cheapest DSLR with HD video would probably be the Canon 500D / T1i (720p) or 550D / T2i (1080p). Feel free to discuss further on the cameralabs . com forums!
Yes it should work, but like all lenses you attach to a DSLR with a cropped sensor, the focal length will effectively be multiplied - in the case of the Canon by 1.6 times. So it will act like a 56-112mm and miss out on wide angle coverage.
really great how you are naming the slight details in your reviews like what operating system the software runs on followed by the current operating system YOU are running the software on. really nice to have this information if you do need it and not annoying if you do not need it. keep them coming!
Normally I'd say the 1000D / XS as it's better-featured with higher resolution, live view and more focusing points, BUT the D40 has an unusually fast flash sync speed of 1/500, which can be useful for action photography. So if you're going to use a flash for your action shots, I'd go for the D40, otherwise get the Canon. Feel free to discuss further on the cameralabs forums...
Hi timetravel, the scores are snapshots at the time of writing, and you have to bear that in mind when comparing them against reviews written earlier. But yep, the E-520 and 1000D / XS are both great choices in our current best-buys with pros and cons. Ultimately a lot will boil down to which looks, feels and even sounds better to you personally - have you handled them in a shop yet? Feel free to discuss this further on the Cameralabs forums...
In Live View you need to press the AE /AF lock button in the upper right corner to autofocus. You'll also need to choose between Quick and Live modes. Your manual has full details, and I also described it all in my review at cameralabs . com.
I completely agree - it's not at all intuitve. On the 500D / T1i it reminds you which button to press (the * button), but it would stiull be easier if you just half-pressed the shutter like Nikon and Sony.
@commanderjet1 Nope, the cheapest Canon DSLR with video recording is the 500D / T1i, BUT I would be surprised if they don't replace the 1000D / XS in 2011 with a model which DOES offer video. Pure speculation though, and no timescales other than sometime in 2011.
I'm just getting into SLR photography, the canon xs is my first DSLR camera and so far I love it. It really helps to have great videos like yours to help me figure out what all these new settings and terms mean.keep up the great work, and to the person who asked about whether the lens can be removed..yes It can be removed and switched with another.
I can't say because you've not mentioned prices, the lenses in question or what you'd be using it for. Either way, check out the verdict page of my 1000D / XS review at cameralabs . com to compare the bodies and current pricing. and also have a look at our best buys section. Then feel free to discuss your options in the buying a new camera section of the cameralabs forums...
live view must be enabled through the menu options. Go to menu, and go to the 5 tab from the left (yellow wrench) and it should be the second to the last option on the list just above flash control. Click into the Live view settings and in Live view shoot. change it from disable to enable. When you go shoot a picture, click set button (the middle of the pad) and live view should show.
This review is really brilliant... I'm in the market for an inexpensive DSLR for some very specific tasks, and most of my searches lead me back to this camera. The review in this clip answered some questions I had, and clued me into some things I hadn't read about. Cheers, excellent work!
Bought this one last week from ebay India and hence sadly not by clicking through your website.......must admit your classy review was a big factor in deciding to buy the 1000D and i'm not regretting it a bit :) ...... Hey Gordon keep up the good work, love all your reviews......
Just a quick word of thanks. You have found your calling. The information here is outstanding. I'm in the market for an entry level DSLR and of all the various reviews on them, yours have been the best. Cheers.
Hi, I've compared and rated these in the Best Buys section at cameralabs . com - check out the budget and mid-range DSLR categories, and don't forget to visit dslrtips . com and the cameralabs forums for advice on using them!
I'm planning to buy my first DSLR camera as i enjoy taking photos very much. And the camera's that I've looked at so far is this Canon 1000D, Nikon D40 and D60. The live view is something i would like to have in hand, which the 1000D has but that's something i could actually live without. So which would you recommend to me who is just starting with DSLR's? Maybe one of the three i wrote or maybe some other?
Of course you can just stop continuous shooting by releasing the shutter button. It just means that as long as you press the button, the cam will continue shooting, not like some other cams with which you can only shoot x amount of pictures because the buffer has run out.
Hey great review. I'm really new DSLR and I'm wondering on how I can use the depth of field button in practice. Is it a big problem if it's not there? Also, is it really a disadvantage to have 7 points auto focus rather than 9? Thanks for your help.
Right,I'm a amateur photographer wishing to get right into photography.I'm used to the live preview on my compact,so would getting a DSLR with live view be better for me as im not used to it?Also,i don't have any idea how you could take a picture without know what its going to look like with aperture changes and what not;or does the viewfinder show this somehow?I have my eyes on the CanonEOS1000D, NikonD60 andD40x.Seem like great cameras, but only one has live view. Thanks for answers in advance:)
@ZackAlphabet for a start, i did read somewhere that nikon and canon are par up with each other. its mroe of which brand you are accustomed to. also, most professionals i know use canon, but really no difference but i could be wrong; im a beginner too. however, i did hear that canon cams can accept nikon lenses where as nikon dslrs dont accept other lenses by only nikon.
Nice review. I just got this puppy not too long ago & its very nice. Now I'm just waiting to order a SDHC card for it. I got a cool deal too came with the 18-55mm, but also the 75-300mm telephoto lens for free. They just bumped the camera back up to its normal price($50 more). It's nice you helped teach me about features that I wouldn't have known of(I didn't read through the manual). Also wouldn't it wear the camera out a little using the live view mode?
Hi Gordon, Great videos! I have a question for you. I'm into Astrophotography, and I would really appreciate your recommendation on a DSLR that lets me keep the shutter open, for long-exposures. Does this camera offer that feature? OR, Is there another (possible) "affordable" camera option with this feature, say maybe around $500 - $600??? Or am I asking for a miracle? :) Thanks a bunch!
I've not tested the P80, so can't comment, but it's not a DSLR. I'd recommend reading the 'should I buy a DSLR or compact' feature at cameralabs . com, then check out our best buys section...
Im very stressed about what DSLR i want for christmas. I'm between the Nikon D3000 and this camera. My friend has the new XS and i think its to light for my taste. I like a heavier feel when im taking pictures. My photography 2 teacher has a canon 20d and im in love with it, just cant find it online for what im looking for. If you have a suggestion let me know! Thank you, Justin
Hey great review. I'm really new DSLR and I'm wondering on how I can use the depth of field button in practice. Is it a big problem if it's not there? I read that spot metering is not on the camera. Will that also cause a big disadvantage? Also, is it really a disadvantage to have 7 points auto focus rather than 9? Thanks for your help. -FRiZz
Hey Gordon Im wondering if the Live View PC program for the XS or XSI lets you see the changes in the image on the screen upon changing the settings BEFORE taking the picture? Please help.
Thanks for posting this Gordon! I'm an amature Photographer looking to go from Digital to my first SLR. After watching your review, I really do like the Canon EOS 1000D or Rebel XS. Can I ask, what are your thoughts on the Nicon P80? Thanks!!
Ive been watching your reviews and now Im stuck between the 1000D, the Olympus E-420 and the Sony A350. Which one would you recomend? This is my first DSLR. The D60's an option too but I'd prefure one with live view
Hey Gordon Im wondering if the PC software that comes with the XS or XSI lets you see live changes in the image as your making changes to the picture settings (ie Shutter speed, sensitivity, exposure compensation etc) BEFORE taking the picture ? Please help.
@johnkratoszaidi2 Yes it would work, but the focal length would be multiplied by 1.6x, so you'd lose the wide angle. I'd buy the 1000D with the kit lens as it will be more flexible. Don't forget to shop through the partner stores page at cameralabs . com to support us!
I have watched all your reviews over and over for budget DSLR's. I am going with the Canon XS featured in this video. And I have to ask where do you live? Where ever it is the location is absolutely beautiful.
Hello Gordon, First I would say GREAT VIDEOS!!! Now, coming to the point, I am a beginner and currently using Canon Eos66 manual SLR with Canon Zoom Lens EF 28-80mm. I am switching to DSLR and will most probably buy 1000D; If I buy the body only, will my Canon Zoom Lens EF 28-80mm be compatible on 1000D? Please shed some light. John
Hi i was wondering if you could HELP me.... what would you guys buy for 549€ D3000 + 18-55 + 55-200 NIKON or EOS 1000D + EF-S 18-55mm + EF 75-300mm CANON or EOS 1100D + EF-S 18-55 DC IIICANON I have the opportunity of buying any of those for the same price i just want to know which is the best option?????
Hello Gordon, I am just wanting to purchase my first DSLR and I am stuck between this camera and the Pentax KX. which would be better as far as features and picture quality goes? Thanks, Brandon
wow that's a good feedback! so would you really recommend me to buy it? cause i'm going to get it tomorrow or the day after. and is it true that it doesn't take video?
Hi Gordon, do you suggest for me to wait for Canon to market another entry-level DSLR, instead of buying this one? and if so, how long will I have to wait?
way way better review than cnet... thanks a ton! after reading and seeing reviews for past 15 days, today I completely understood the subtle differences between xs, xsi and d3000...
i just got this camera, and i absolutely love it. but i'm a little confused on how to auto focus on live view. i go to hold the shutter button down half way, and it doesn't focus, even though i have the auto focus switch on the lense set to on. some help would be greatly appreciated.
I am an architect student and I need a DSLR camera. I watched most of your videos, however I can't decide between the Canon EOS 1000 or the Nikon D5000. I know the Nikon doesn't have the AF lenses. But which one is going to give better quality pictures( with and witouth zooming). Can u help me out ? thanks
Hey Gordon, thanks for the review! I was just about to buy a compact before going through your DSLR reviews in curiosity. This video pretty much had me sold and I found a 1000D on ebay, loving it. :D
Sorry if this is a bit idiotic, but continuous shooting "until the card is full". Does this mean that once you start shooting the camera will keep taking pictures until the card is full, or can you stop the continuous shooting at any time.
i've just got my cam few hours ago, still have a lot to understand, but i wanna ask ,does it have video shooting or not,,and is zooming only manually ,or there is option to zoom before shooting wider than the 55mm?????sumone help me please
I have now Canon PowerShot A580 and I'm considering to buy Canon EOS 1000D with 15-55mm lens with IS. It costs 450e and that's about 630USD. Without IS it costs 400e/560USD. Is stabilizer so necessary that I should pay 50e/70USD extra? How many times can I zoom with 18-55mm lens?
Excellent review, Mr. Laing! Kudos to these reviews, they're really helpful for newbies like me. Will you be doing a review about the Sigma SD14 with its Foveon X3 sensor? It's really quite interesting with its three 4.7MP RGB stacked CMOS sensor. The actual resolution of this camera and its performance with regard to pixel detail is debated at some review sitez. We would really appreciate your take and comments on the Sigma SD14 (which they say is for serious photographers). Thanks!
Hi. you need to go to your custom fucntions in your cameras menu:/C.Fn 1 :Exposure / scroll to option 3 and enable ISO expansion. this will allow your ISO to jump from a max of 1600 to 3200, called H on your LCD screen. you might want to enable High ISO noise reduct. too (C.Fn 2 option 2) have fun!
should i get this or the 500d? the 1000d is nearly half the price of the 500d and besides, i relaised i can get a cheaper body but a very impressive lens. if im correct, its the lens that brings the real quality anyway. cant wait to get this soon!
hi. i'm really loving the canon eos 1000d, but i'm not sure if i'm going to get it since i'm still an amateur. which one should i get for my first dslr??
simple question nikon d3000 or canon 1000d? im a student doing a national diploma in photography so i just need a camera that gets the job done and is easy to use :)
Yes, it'll show the photo immediately afterwards for a quick check, and you can of course press play at any point to take a more leisurely look and zoom-in on the details. You should be able to do all this with any digital camera though...
I'm not sure what you mean, but any photo you take with a digital camera can be seen on its screen afterwards.

Hi, feel free to ask in the canon section of the cameralabs forums, but be sure to tell us the model and type of your old lens.
I've explained this in the autofocus points question in the dslrtips section of the cameralabs forum!
Sadly not. I'd have mentioned that in the video if it could! The cheapest Canon DSLR with video right now is the 500D / T1i.

It's the same camera - known as the Rebel XS in North America and the 1000D everywhere else (apart from Japan).
@kamikazeOS Yep, the 1100D / T3! I hope to review it soon... check cameralabs . com...
Yes, but it will become equivalent to 38-168mm which isn't very wide. SO you'd probably also need a wide angle lens to go with it.
In Live View you need to press the AE /AF lock button in the upper right corner to autofocus. You'll also need to choose between Quick and Live modes. Your manual has full details, and I also described it all in my review at cameralabs . com.

Some cheaper kits have started selling with the older non-IS version of the lens.
@cameralabs Your videos are one of the only videos that I do not mind seeing a pre-roll ad on. You have our support ! :)
I love my XS, I think I'll be going up to the T1i soon for a lil upgrade with a few more options.

Check out the budget DSLR category in the best buys section at cameralabs . com - those are the models I'd recommend for a DSLR beginner.
Bought this one last week from ebay India and hence sadly not by clicking through your website.......must admit your classy review was a big factor in deciding to buy the 1000D and i'm not regretting it a bit :) ......

@MrXalan Try using a larger arpeture setting and/or slower shutter speed.
Hi Gordon, I am a new Canon DSLR user. I find your reviews very helpful. Thank you for posting your videos.
Hey great review. I'm really new DSLR and I'm wondering on how I can use the depth of field button in practice. Is it a big problem if it's not there? Also, is it really a disadvantage to have 7 points auto focus rather than 9? Thanks for your help.
Hi JazzB1987, lots of questions there - best ask on the cameralabs forums...

Thanks for the review, i am a total beginner here, do you recommend the Nikon D3000 or the Canon EOS1000 ?
@ZackAlphabet for a start, i did read somewhere that nikon and canon are par up with each other. its mroe of which brand you are accustomed to. also, most professionals i know use canon, but really no difference but i could be wrong; im a beginner too. however, i did hear that canon cams can accept nikon lenses where as nikon dslrs dont accept other lenses by only nikon.
I am wondering if it is possible to take black and white pictures with the camera.
Hey Gordon, can you make a video review on the new Canon 550D/Rebel T2i?
Nice review. I just got this puppy not too long ago & its very nice. Now I'm just waiting to order a SDHC card for it. I got a cool deal too came with the 18-55mm, but also the 75-300mm telephoto lens for free. They just bumped the camera back up to its normal price($50 more). @Travdog1985 : the auto-focus on the live view mode doesn't work, so you have to use manual-focus for the live view mode.
Hi Gordon,

Thanks a bunch!
can you program the camera to take pictures every 5 seconds for example?
I've compared them in my D3000 preview at cameralabs . com.
I've not tested the P80, so can't comment, but it's not a DSLR. I'd recommend reading the 'should I buy a DSLR or compact' feature at cameralabs . com, then check out our best buys section...
Please see my D3000 and Sony A230 reviews at cameralabs - I've fully compared both against the 1000D / XS.
Is the focusing screen scratched, or is that simply dust? If it's scratched, it means someone before you has played around with it.
Im very stressed about what DSLR i want for christmas. I'm between the Nikon D3000 and this camera. My friend has the new XS and i think its to light for my taste.

Hey Gordon
Im wondering if the Live View PC program for the XS or XSI lets you see the changes in the image on the screen upon changing the settings BEFORE taking the picture? Please help.
I've compared them on the verdict page of my 1000D / XS review at cameralabs . com...
Thanks for posting this Gordon!
I'm an amature Photographer looking to go from Digital to my first SLR. After watching your review, I really do like the Canon EOS 1000D or Rebel XS. Can I ask, what are your thoughts on the Nicon P80? Thanks!!
When did this camera come out ? Also is it a good canon camera ? How do you upload pictures to the computer with it ?
Ive been watching your reviews and now Im stuck between the 1000D, the Olympus E-420 and the Sony A350.
Which one would you recomend? This is my first DSLR.
The D60's an option too but I'd prefure one with live view
Hey Gordon
Im wondering if the PC software that comes with the XS or XSI lets you see live changes in the image as your making changes to the picture settings (ie Shutter speed, sensitivity, exposure compensation etc) BEFORE taking the picture ? Please help.
@johnkratoszaidi2 Yes it would work, but the focal length would be multiplied by 1.6x, so you'd lose the wide angle. I'd buy the 1000D with the kit lens as it will be more flexible. Don't forget to shop through the partner stores page at cameralabs . com to support us!
I have watched all your reviews over and over for budget DSLR's. I am going with the Canon XS featured in this video. And I have to ask where do you live? Where ever it is the location is absolutely beautiful.
Hi Gordon,
I have a question. What is the coverage from the optical view finder ?
Hello Gordon,
First I would say GREAT VIDEOS!!!
Now, coming to the point,
I am a beginner and currently using Canon Eos66 manual SLR with Canon Zoom Lens EF 28-80mm.
I am switching to DSLR and will most probably buy 1000D;
If I buy the body only, will my Canon Zoom Lens EF 28-80mm be compatible on 1000D?
Please shed some light.
John
Just ordered mine... hope it comes in soon safely!!
Hi i was wondering if you could HELP me.... what would you guys buy for 549€
D3000 + 18-55 + 55-200 NIKON or
EOS 1000D + EF-S 18-55mm + EF 75-300mm CANON or
EOS 1100D + EF-S 18-55 DC IIICANON
I have the opportunity of buying any of those for the same price i just want to know which is the best option?????
Hello Gordon,
I am just wanting to purchase my first DSLR and I am stuck between this camera and the Pentax KX. which would be better as far as features and picture quality goes? Thanks,
Brandon
I've compared their features in the verdict page of my 1000D / XS review at cameralabs . com...
is there a way to have it always go to live view every time you turn it on?
wow that's a good feedback! so would you really recommend me to buy it? cause i'm going to get it tomorrow or the day after.
and is it true that it doesn't take video?
Do you think the price of this one will go down when the new one comes out?
Hi Gordon, do you suggest for me to wait for Canon to market another entry-level DSLR, instead of buying this one? and if so, how long will I have to wait?
@cameralabs
So I cannot video with this camera at all?
way way better review than cnet... thanks a ton! after reading and seeing reviews for past 15 days, today I completely understood the subtle differences between xs, xsi and d3000...
i just got this camera, and i absolutely love it. but i'm a little confused on how to auto focus on live view. i go to hold the shutter button down half way, and it doesn't focus, even though i have the auto focus switch on the lense set to on. some help would be greatly appreciated.
It's optical like all DSLRs. Please don't ask the same question on multiple reviews.
Have a look at the verdict page of our D60 review at cameralabs . com - it weighs up the pros and cons of both.
i've just got my cam few hours ago, still have a lot to understand, but i wanna ask ,does it have video shooting or not,,and is zooming only manually ,or there is option to zoom before shooting wider than the 55mm?????sumone help me please
Queenstown in New Zealand!
Thumbs up here from all those who LOVE you!
Gordon, you are a Legend...
i checked out the site, adn i'm torn between the canon eos 1000d and nikon d60. but what is live view exactly?? don't know if i need that or not.
confused between sony a200 and canon1000d. which is a better camera overall???
Thanks!
hey Gordon, are all the EOS cameras built in japan??
What would you say is a better camera, this or the Nikon D3000? I can really only choose between those two and do not know which to buy. Please help?
Hi. you need to go to your custom fucntions in your cameras menu:/C.Fn 1 :Exposure / scroll to option 3 and enable ISO expansion. this will allow your ISO to jump from a max of 1600 to 3200, called H on your LCD screen. you might want to enable High ISO noise reduct. too (C.Fn 2 option 2) have fun!
im thinking about buying this camera, i just wanted to know can this camera fit all sorts of lenses?
should i get this or the 500d? the 1000d is nearly half the price of the 500d and besides, i relaised i can get a cheaper body but a very impressive lens. if im correct, its the lens that brings the real quality anyway. cant wait to get this soon!
Hi in wanting a dslr for my 14th birthday and I quite like the look of this but someone said it feels tacky is that true?
Hey Gordon , between the Canon EOS 1000D and Nikon D3000 , which is better ?
Both have practically the same price tag..
Hmm, i'm unable to chose between D80, 1000D and 450D. Which do you think is better?
hi. i'm really loving the canon eos 1000d, but i'm not sure if i'm going to get it since i'm still an amateur. which one should i get for my first dslr??
simple question nikon d3000 or canon 1000d? im a student doing a national diploma in photography so i just need a camera that gets the job done and is easy to use :)
@MrSStech Eventually yes, but in the meantime, there's my full review at cameralabs . com.
I'm kind of new to this, and kind of confused. does this camera take video?
