One of my favorites. Here in Spain, all Hazelburns are very expensive (200-600 €) except this one, for some reason (only 60€). I felt very fortunate to be able to taste this Springbank product, and when i tasted i was very impressed. So much personality!
I tried to compare the Campbeltown whiskies i can get my hands on here (Hazelburn 10, Springbank 10, Longrow 10, Kilkerran 12, Glen Scotia Victoriana) and i just cant chose the one i like more. They are all exceptional. Specially the Spingbank ones, they are so unique.
3 months? More like 3 years! hahahahaha
    Good video!! Good luck!!!

Hey Ralfy, these naughty 40%, coloured, and chill-filtered whisky-making distilleries, I HOPE they know how much the Ralfy ARMY is growing significantly and literally mostly buying whisky at 46% (or more), natural-colour, non chill-filtered, and if it allows, aged-statements...
Boy they will be disappointed so soon to know many people are converting from the "Regular consumer" to the "informed customer"....
The sooner these naughty 40% distilleries learn about this, the faster we will all be better off towards quality, not quantity. Just sharing.....

I must share this with all with an open mind here..... I was blind tasting with friends, we had multiple glasses in front of us, and I found that the complimentary differences from glass to glass actually had increased many fold and the flavors were more pronounced, even different or evolving and each taste was different even from the same glass.. I will now drink my whiskeys by pouring two or three different glasses, of different whiskeys, and allow each to play upon each other, being the best experience I have found.

For me this is a must for any Springbank distillery enthusiast. The opportunity to taste the Springbank spirit unpeated and presented simply but well done with just a Bourbon cask maturation. Think that with the first still being direct fire one of the stills also has worm tub condensers too? Cheers

    • @justinafuchs2619
      @justinafuchs2619 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@tomgibson9620”Just hype” is an embarrassingly dumb statement. I hate how the prices for Campbeltown whiskies have raised because of those scavengers and flippers. It’s a shame.
But the whisky from Springbank/Hazelburn/Longrow/Kilkerran and even Glen Scotia is fantastic. Springbank is a unicorn in the whisky world, and they are not responsible for the prices.
What you’re really saying is “I never had a whisky from the Springbank distillery because I don’t want to pay those prices” - and that’s perfectly fine. It’s understandable, every Scotch lover feels that way about the prices.
But you’re basically adding “And because I don’t want to spend the money for it, I decide it’s all hype. Nothing special at all”. - And that’s incredibly ignorant and dumb.
You’re acting like the fox who can’t reach the grapes, just grow up.

Hi Ralfy. I am enjoying my bottle of Hazelburn 10 as well. It is standing shoulder to shoulder with my Springbank 10 and Kilkerran 12 in my whisky cabinet. It is a slow and enjoyable race to the bottom of the bottles, another 375 ml to go in each. It will be replaced, with no question.

  • @darkoanton5
    @darkoanton5 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I bought it a couple of months ago and I'm just trying it at the moment. I can see that is not the typical clear-looking Scotch. It reminds me of a diffuser filter on a camera or the kind they used in old black and white movies when the starlet was the main person in the frame.
On the nose, I get a big hit of ripe pears and baked apples. A bit floral, vanilla, caramel, and some oak spice. It reminds me a bit of the spot whiskeys only riper fruit. On the palate, oily with more pear, full maltiness, and some sweetness followed by a well-rounded spice and an incredible and very long warm finish.
I've been at the Scotch discovery for the last two years. Before that, I'd have a mixing bottle like Ballentine's Finest (haha - finest) and then either a Glenlivet 12 and a Glenfiddich 12 (gift from my brother). It was a bottle of Glenlivet Founder's Reserve that started me on the Scotch discovery journey. Personally, I concluded that it sucked (it was used to make rusty nails until I finished it), but it did lead me to reviews on youtube that got me interested in trying other Scotches. First, it was Horst and you (Ralfy) and the many others like Scotch Addicts, Whisky in the Six, Whisky Neighbour, Eric, Whisky Vault, and then Whisky Whistle. Thank you to all of them who put in the time to share their whisky experiences with the on-line world.

I think the fact that Springbank & Cadenhead's packaging stands out so much (often not in a hugely positive way) is because they're a Scottish company looking at packaging and labeling in a very Scottish way: meaning it needs to serve its purpose in the most cost-effective way possible and that's the end of it. I don't really have an issue with it.

I was up half the night Ralfy trying to remember the Hazelburn whisky that I had tasted 6 years ago. I woke up this morning here in a snowy Canada still puzzled but luckily I keep all my own taste notes in diaries. Sure enough, I found it. The expression I had was the Hazelburn 10 Year Rundlets & Kilderkins, 50.1% ABV. Triple distilled and matured 2003-Jan. 2014. It was a memorable dram and I thought you might like to see my taste notes on this one:
Nose: A faint hint of kippers and then baked apples. Bananas hanging in a mesh copper basket from the kitchen ceiling; citrus jellies, English toffee and orange marmalade. An underlying sweet ester is brought into the mix.
Taste: Full-bodied. Interesting spruce beer accents, spicy with a Cream Soda flourish, orange zest and leather essence. A splash of bog water as well and then freshly sliced tangy ginger.
Finish: Long, slightly numbing/warming initially and then an explosion of baking spices, especially cinnamon and a late sweetish bloom. Some pleasant woody elements on the caboose.
Comments: This whisky is like a magic carpet ride or perhaps like a whirling dervish with creativity in aromatic and flavor presentation. One needs to spend time with this expression to appreciate its character and quality.
    My Score: 92

I bought 2 bottles of this 10 a couple months ago at $69.99 because I knew the price was going to go up again in the U.S. they are the 2019 version and have not opened it yet. the sherried 13 & 14 have just a touch of peat to them and most Hazelburn has just a whisp of peat to it even though they say it is unpeated just like Bruichladdich does but there is still a touch in it. Beautiful stuff. Elegant pretty malt

I really appreciate the confirmation that slow is the way to go. It’ll usually take me a couple of hours to finish a dram, and about three months to finish a bottle.
One question...critics who write about distilleries in Ireland can often tout the use of unmalted barley, saying that it is the reason/purpose for triple distillation. Is the use of unmalted barley considered taboo in the distillation of single malt whisky in Scotland?

You have extreme patience. It would be like torture waiting for the next taste. You said they have smaller stills than most. Does that drive the lack of product or is that by design? I have never had a bad bottle of Springbank but they are very hard to come by in Canada.

My gripe with anything out of the Springbank distillery is the price premium I have to pay in the US where I am. People complain about Macallan price premiums, but Springbank is getting there. So I pass.

Ralfy I thought there was no scotch mist at 46% ABV, hence distillers not chill filtering above that point. Did I misunderstand something here? Slainte

I couldn’t make that dram last two hours, but I often make one last over an hour.
I often do the sip sip glut thing on my reviews because I always add a little water after I’ve done my initial taste, and I just don’t tend to like it as much with the added water. I wouldn’t glue a dram without water in it.

Well done Ralfy ..Quality whisky and a quality review ..Thanks !...
Ralfy , what is your opinion please of the current trend for 3 year old whiskies , some appear to be really pretty good Bimber and Cotswold founders reserve , while others ( quite a lot ) by other English and Scots distillers ) appear to be a complete rip off for the money 60/70pounds plus for young whiskies which are to my taste often artificially over sherried ,my knowledge is not good enough to opinion further , but hoping you can give us an honest Ralfy view of some of these at some stage , I'm suspecting that all bar a few might be jumping on a bandwagon and charging way too much for less than spectacular products and expertise ?....would appreciate your thoughts on the best/worst of this new bread of young whiskies

Just found one at my local LCBO here in Ontario. Online said there was 1 in inventory in another city. So pleased and surprised to see this. If it's anywhere close to Springbank 15 this is a bargain!

We had the Hazelburn 10 as part of a whisky tasting in our Saigon whisky club, and finished it...sorry Ralfy ;-) Not sure if we did it or ourselves a disservice by finishing it, however it came top with a few of us, even beating out a cask strength Cragganmore 20yr. It was delicious, and will be in my personal cabinet as soon as I can find it again....for a slower experience! Definitely lemon / grapefruit!

    • @joxaway

@@h.nguyen9992 Yes, Hazelburn was bought locally in Saigon. We are starting to get a reasonable selection through some quite good independent suppliers, with prices that are not much higher than the UK. Certainly still limited choice compared to UK, but we'll take what we can get. Enjoy a dram or two for Tet! Chuc Mung Nam Moi.

btw i love this bottle. Very high on my list. Even above lowlands. Bladnoch 10 is very similar and has little more vanilla in taste, but Hazelburn 10 is more dense and more cereal. I comoared both ( I had 3 bladnoch 10s till now and still know a shop that has them), but this Hazelburn 10 is dare to say even better. Or similar ar least.
