Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt's character) from Inglorious Basterds brought me here. He mentions Eliza on ice towards the end of the movie when Hans Landa arrested him and was interrogating him.
I have an idea! Let's all write the how and why we came across this video! Now, be as specific as possible! Don't just mention the character name, also include the actor's name in parenthesis, the name of the film, and where approximately in the movie this reference took place. OK ready guy?!?! Go!
Just yesterday realized for the first time on what he was really saying. I always thought he said "lies on ice", which I just took as Tarantino having Aldo calling the Hunter a liar in a interesting way. Fascinating that he shoehorned in this reference. That's even more Tarantino of him!
I finally found this years after watching the ending montage to the movie Bamboozled. It's a constant reminder of how things were, and continue to live on in plain sight. If you haven't seen it yet I would suggest you go check it out. Terrence Blanchard did an amazing job on the scores. It's also gives you the history of Mantan Mooreland. Which I suggest looking up the old episode called, "The Lucky Ghost".
I'm glad this out there. It's racist AF but an important piece of history. I always wondered about the phrase Eliza on the ice. Now I know, along with the historical significance. Also, if you haven't, read Uncle Tom's Cabin. A very important book.
MM 011 1944 For the first time Mighty has shed his Superman style costume but it is the reverse of what he will ultimately wear, yellow tights and red trunks and cape. He changed his name from Supermouse to Mighty Mouse 3 cartoons ago, in #08 The Wreck of the Hesperus. Two small but exactly right steps in the making of this great heroic mouse.
Yes, I actually learned that recently. Not knowing exactly what the tune was, I asked on an animation message board and one poster told me it was an upbeat version of "Nelly was a Lady."
Why is this one of the more accurate Uncle Tom's Cabin cartoons... Even though everything is completely out of order. Makes me wish there was an animated movie that actually follows the book. Edit: If they just switched Eliza and Harry (her kid) with Cassy and Emmeline it would be perfect lol.
This is the one you'll NEVER see on TV, for obvious reasons. Integrating "The Champion Of Justice" with "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was certainly an offbeat idea, and Phil Scheib embellishes his score for all it's worth (as he did in 1941's "Mississippi Swing"). "Our Hero" eventually faced a more traditional "mellerdrama" villain in Oil Can Harry by 1947.
But Simon Legree is more well known in "Uncle Tom's Cabin" than Mr. Haley is, so Simon Legree ends up chasing Eliza. Anyway, I like your little liner notes throughout the cartoon. I learned quite a lot about the music and the book on which "Eliza on the Ice" was based. Very interesting! BTW, has anyone ever read the book? Can you still find it in a modern library?

I've read the novel and it's interesting to see this adaptation! Thank you very much for your notes throughout as well. (:
Thanks, I too loved the toon and the notes were welcome. I don't think I ever saw this early MM. so thanks again.
Bill Tytla animated "Simon Legree".

ESLinstructor1 how do I get notations?
1:47 Old Folks At Home/The Swanee River
You can find the book in either your local library or your local bookstore. I have read the book so that's how I know.

Narrator: And off to the rescue flashes Mighty Mouse! 4:24

PRR K4 1361 Whistle 3:17
What I MEANT to say, 'rentatrip', was that it was withdrawn from all "Terrytoon" TV packages by the late '60s...
It’s same then a video 3:16
Same here. And I'm happy he did :D
Watermelons?? Srsly?

Aldo Raine brought me here! :D
I think the song at 2:33 is "Ring de Banjo" instead of "Nelly Was a Lady"
Little Eva is a bit more (ahem) mature than depicted in the novel.
Glee got me here
Terrytoons Theatrical Shorts from WGN-TV’s Bozo Show
Glee told me to come and look at this
Grace Taylor wait how?
Through the power of Sondheim. 'Getting Married Today'
How do you turn annotations on?
Practice
Aldo Raine sent me here LOL.
wow stereotypical to the max
Its still a good film tho
Makes Blazing Saddles look like a documentary. Racism, what racism? But I still like the cartoon.
We need more cartoons like these, its all garbage these days.
Correct
Dam this is some racist shit, Tarantino would reference this...
Bearly. The Black Characters are the protagonist while the whitest guy in the world is the antagonist.
And it's kinda racist
wtf it's so racist I'm crying laughing
god awful.
I like this cartoon very well and political correctness can go to Hell.
Not being a piece of shit != political correctness
the story of Eliza is amazing but this portrayal of black people sucks!
