Blacksmithing basics for beginners: Forge welded chain.

- In this week's video, I demonstrate ad chat about how I make forge welded chain.
First off, if you aren't familiar with forge welding or are a bit rusty, have a look at my scarf welding video before watching this one as I've avoided talking about the principles of welding in this one in order to save time.
This may be useful for ornamental chain - which is what I use it for - as well as industrial heritage restoration work (and demonstrations). Any questions, please feel free to ask in the comments.

I love that direction.. "Drop your lit piece ..... Swear a bit". That is a very accurate description of blacksmithing. No matter how many tongs you have and for what sizes... Pieces end up in the floor and we always beg God He sends the item and the whole situation and our career choice straight to hell OR we jump to the uncomfortable remark of "fuck me"

Another great video. I too curse at my work when it falls. It laughs at me when I struggle to grab it with the wrong set of tongs!

+Colin Cofield Always wear leather shoes! I wore old trainers when I first started as a hobby and one dropped a small piece of metal whch I was chiselling off. Well it melted through my shoes and into my foot. I had no bosh to drop my foot in so I had to unlace my shoe and kick it off with a hot piece of metal and melted nylon slowly burning away at me. Never again!

Rowan, why do you hit this scarf weld three times around the corner of the anvil? I do not recall other than this was how you were taught as a reason. If it is beneficial, why not set up the scarf weld from your other video in this manner? Love the video and knowledge you express in these. Best tutorial I have seen yet! Keep it up sir. 👍

Very instructional video. I have been looking and having a hard time finding anything describing or showing a way to make wire metal in a similar fashion. I am curious how hystorically accurate chain mail was created from scratch.

I have only ever seen videos of smiths forging from 3 to 6 links. I've often wondered how smiths handled this job when they were making long chains. It seems like the weight alone would make the job very difficult--not to mention the chain being in the way both in the fire and on the anvil.
Well, the length of the chain eventually would just spill onto the floor. The weight to contend with working would eventually just be the length of the chain coming from the pile on the floor to the anvil. If you had a lowish anvil, it would probably only be like 20 or 30 pounds max you had to actually hold off the floor.
How long would it take to forge a 10ft chain do you reckon?
You make that look easy i wager there'd be a bit more swearing if i was to give it a go
+thornwarbler Have a go with some scrap - I find chain making quite therapeutic. Obviously you might not if it is your first go!
Alternatives to the heel of an anvil for scarves? I have a double horn anvil without a shelf.
The step should work fine. You can just use the normal edge too, but be careful about how you 2 scarves line up for the weld.
Can you use a very hot burning wood stove as a forge as long as I have a lot of coals? Would like to give it a try. Thanks!
Jordan/Shyadow i halve done it a few times however it does take a lot longer to get iny thing done but it works :)

+Hot Iron Art I don't know for sure as it has no markings but I would say around two or three hundredweight

soundfxmaster not when you are attaching it to a 30 foot length. much easier to do them in threes as it is less messing around.

I find this quite an odd analogy because any random vicar would be bound to *_"go at it"_* in a way completely different to the previous vicar.
