Wow. I’ve heard about Lake Michigan but this is the first pics I’ve ever seen. And little Josey- his mom must have been devastated. Nice tribute to her baby boy.
My Mom would tease me with my Dad how I like visiting cemeteries then when her Mother passed away and I went with her to my Grandmother’s gravesite, we found a bench sat and talked for hours. It was a beautiful day and time flew by as we just sat and talked. She came home and told my Dad, “Your daughter really likes visiting cemeteries. We talked for hours and then she started walking around looking at the head stones. I was surprised to see how much she enjoyed looking at and reading the head stones I looked at my Dad and said, “It’s quiet, peaceful, and I enjoy looking at people’s final resting places. It’s fascinating to me to see a person’s name, their date of birth/end date, sometimes see their occupation and some people’s final resting spots their tombs are amazing architecture and again…It’s Peaceful!” My Dad said, “I get it. Next time, I will go with you, so i don’t have to hear your Mother.” I laughed and said, “Yes, it is quiet and peaceful 🤣 Chicago South Side is full of cemeteries 👍.
Outstanding. I'd been hoping for ya to stop by here! When I first saw the O'Brien plot with the head Igot startled. The lake being so close gives a haunting yet calming vibes. I visit here multiple times a year.
Peter Smith 1893 at about 16:50 most likely originally had stairs going down to a full-sized door but was backfilled with soil and leveled off because he had no more people visiting his grave, they were either all dead or too sick. Same thing in Chicago's Graceland. Great videos by the way. When I was a young kid in the 60's we would ride or 10 speeds from Chicago's Lake View neighborhood all over the place and visit the area cemeteries, creepy but somehow fascinating. Evanston's Calvary being one of them.
Boy you really get around the States from all I have seen, you were just at Inglewood Park, a day or two ago, and I am glad to have subscribed. Thank you for the tour.
Thank you for another interesting video. I love cemeteries and only live a couple hours away from there.I'm going to have to go see that cemetery soon.
The second apartment I ever rented in my life, back in the late 80's, was on Eastlake Terrace, in Chicago, which is the first north-south street one can enter in Chicago, traveling southbound on Sheridan Road, which is the major thoroughfare paralleling Lake Michigan on the east side of Calvary Cemetery. I lived three apartment buildings from this cemetery for four years, walking by it on foot, riding by it in a car or "L" car (from the CTA's Purple Line, one can get a clear view of the cemetery), or jogging by it during my daily exercise run, on the alley that parallels the entire north side of it in Evanston, countless times, yet I never once set foot in it. Juneway Terrace, which is the most northern street in Chicago (7800 North) has an alley that runs the entire length of Calvary Cemetery on its south border. I recall there was a wall separating the cemetery from the alley. The one thing that sticks out in my mind about Calvary Cemetery, having lived so close to for so long, was that the gateway into it off of Sheridan Road, was a location Evanston Police would often set a squad car and catch drivers exceeding the posted speed limit. When they were there, it was common to see them issue several citations in a brief period of time. If you were a local driver, you knew to closely obey the posted speed limit when traveling on Sheridan in front of Calvary Cemetery.
Thanks for doing this again and sharing with all of us. That Joseph Lyon one is beautiful I think. Very lovely piece of art. I wonder if they put that capsul around the Joseph Lyon boy to preserve it? I am a yard statue person and some of my statues are falling apart on the bottom and my sister told me I have to put a coat of sealer on them every year to preserve them (I guess from the elements) which I did not know. I have always gone to cemetaries also and find them peaceful. Death is a part of life. I have had lunches at cemetaries and just sat to think. Hope you have a wonderful 4th of July weekend.
My guess it could be the head of an instrument cleaning scrubber? Kind of like a Q-tip. Or a fixture mouth piece on an instrument? Interesting for sure.
2:47 - Michael Cudahy was the founder of the Armour Company, meat packers. Chicago was once the "Hog Butcher of the World" when the stockyards were still here.
Beautiful cemetery. Have to ask, are alot of these people laid to rest were rich ? Or is stone work cheaper there than other places ? Beautiful pieces.
There is a mausoleum I think it’s in the SF Bay Area, that has a life sized statue of the man entombed in the mausoleum with glass doors. So the guy recording the video got spooked big time as he approached the mausoleum because he didn’t expect to see a man standing inside! Yeah, it’s enough to stop you in your tracks! He had a chuckle afterwards like I’m sure we would too!
Do you have any info on the unmarked grave area of Calvary section H. We are going to add a marker to a family member buried there in 1943. We don’t know much about why her grave is unmarked, it may be a Catholic charities section.
The Peter Smith 1893, looks like it once had stairs going down to the entrance but was find in with dirt possibly to stop grave robbers or vandals or even vagrants camping out?
Harry Joseph Powers (1859-1941) was co-manager with Will J. Davis of the Iroquois Theatre in Chicago Richard Martin “Dick” Hooley Musician, comedian, actor, theatrical house owner and manager
Is Calvary Cemetery the place where the ghost of Mary resides? The story goes that her ghost is seen near the cemetery, and, is looking for a ride. When she's let off near the main gate, she disappears.😮😮😮😮
you said do the best you can to step over any graves and yet in many videos you walk on graves. You go right up to the headstone that they're buried in front of or walk through the flat stones where people are buried in the surrounding earth in front if not cremated. So you do it all the time don't you?
Joseph Lyon’s grave is beautiful!!! I have never seen a gravesite quite like his ❤
I agree!

Is there a Ferlin Washburn in that cemetery ?

Peter Smith's tomb looks like it was built into the ground then the entrance backfilled to prevent entry.

There does seem to be a lot of folks there with means or status in society.
RIP🙏

That would be Resurrection Cemetery south of the city.
