  • Shondol means breaking of the line, and is the only dance in which the dancers take backward steps, with the rhythm of music. They move right and left and each time, make a salutation to the very important guests of the function. Even today the dance is performed by ladies with full vigor and the sight is a memorable one.
This video was made in Jammu, pre-UT Status where the Cultural Academy of Ladakh had put up a great show to showcase the rich performing arts of ladakh.
In old times, this dance was performed on the concluding day of the nine day Losar festival at Leh Palace. It was exclusively performed at this New Year celebration by a skilled dancer on the wide roof of the nine storeyed palace - the ceremonial dancing ground of the lion palace of leh called Khatok chenmo.
