The RX8 is a great car. It's especially a great GT car being softer and more comfortable than the BRZ or S2000. I've had a 2004 RX8 for about a year now and quite enjoy it. I've also autocrossed the RX8, BRZ, and S2000 back to back, and have been in all three on more than one occasion. What's unique about the RX8? 1) Usable back seats..for full sized adults. That's a rarity outside of 4 door sedans. You don't see it in the Mustang or Camaro either and end up going to a full sized Challenger/Charger or to a BMW 3 series to start getting something with a usable back seat. 2) It's designed moderately for comfort, more so than you'd expect. The spring and dampers are pretty soft. The cabin is very quiet going down the highway. Plus you have a decent amount of room inside where you don't feel overly cramped. The BRZ does feel more spacious though, but the RX8 fits your body better. 3) Power output is nearly the same as the highly praised S2000 engine. You're looking at the same power, torque, and even similar rpm figures. Back to back, the RX8 actually is a little more torquey feeling than the S2000 (AP1). The BRZ feels a little weak versus both of these. Problems with the RX8? 1) It purposely consumes oil, basically like a 2 stroke engine. It has oil injectors that use oil to lubricate. You will use 1 qt every 1000 miles. It is throttle dependent, so heavy driving will consume more. 2) The coil packs tend to not last long, around 30,000 miles only before heat wrecks them. Make a habit of swapping in new coils and plugs every 2 years. 3) Engine failure often is byproduct of heat generated by a plugged cat. A plugged cat is generally caused by failed coil packs and neglect, so refer back to #2. 4) Engine life is somewhat short with most stating these engines will operate to mechanical failure (sometimes catostrophic) or compression loss within 75,000 to 125,000 miles. It is rare for these engines to last longer. Repair parts are not expensive but dealer replacement is astronomical. Full rebuild kits are only $1000-$1500 depending on needed parts. Third party rotory repair services will be around $3500 but you pull the engine and ship freight. Dealer replacement can be $5000-$7000 and only for cheap remanufactured engines, not even new. 5) If you opt for the power seats and sun roof, both lose you head room. Tall people should look for cars without sunroof or power seats. However, there are tricks you can do to gain head room back. You can add spacers to the seat bottom and trim foam to gain several inches of extra room if necessary. There are ways to make you fit, but that fancy power/leather option and sunroof will compromise your comfort until you make the fixes. Expect to fit well if you're 5'6" to 5'8" tops with power seats and sunroof. Taller will be cramped. Modified, a 6' person can fit fine even with the fancy stuff. 6) Manual only. Everyone will tell you to not even consider the autos in this car. You lose power, fun, and I believe the reliability of them were not great. (someone else can clarify on this one)
I would agree with everything except the power part. It's well established that Mazda was lying about the BHP numbers, these typically put down ~180 wheel, probably makes around 210 crank. The RX8 definitely has one of, if not the best EPS systems and the soft suspension makes the car very fun, especially for the street where it absorbs mid corner bumps easily. It's too bad Matt didn't get to take this on a more challenging back road because the handling balance is perfect.
***** This is pure ignorance. Rotary motors and vtec motors drive completely differently from one another, their only similarity is a high redline. It's true that say a Honda K motor will be able to make more power, more easily while being more reliable and running more efficiently. But you're just comparing numbers on a spec sheet, no one buys an RX8 to do a big power build. These cars are best in stock form and drive with their own completely unique character. If you've ever driven an RX8, or any rotary you would understand.
Point 6: My dad has an auto, and it's alright. 20 more HP would be neat, but it's plenty for him, and he is physically unable to drive stick. The S2 autos are just as reliable, and even some S1 autos won't be major trouble. HOWEVER, an early S1 with the 4-speed (2004-2005) is asking for trouble.
Had an RX8 for 4 years and 80k miles. Loved it. Great interior, great exterior. It's a well balanced sports car and I wish I hadn't sold it. I will likely make room for another one in my garage. I drove 3 different FRS's while I owned the 8 and found the 8 to be superior in every single respect, except fuel econ. If you can handle 16 mpg, then go for it. Note: Aux jack can easily be installed to the stock head unit with a $50 add in card that connects to the port where the tape deck would be. Super simple install. No mods necessary. Google it.
I have an 05 with less than 14k miles. I love that you enjoyed the rx8 as the rx8 is not for everyone. More of a love it or you hate it type of vehicle. However, if you love driving, the rx8 probably is up there with the best handling cars of all time. It's most definitely a drivers car, a car for the purists.
Great review! We sold our 2005 Grand Touring just last year. Really miss it. We added the aux jack which integrates seamlessly into the radio system. You nailed it with the engine being the best/worst thing about the car. Once I finally got ahead of all the maintenance items (plugs, wires, coils) it ran like a champ. It's a seriously formidable car on a road course; since you can maintain so much speed through the turns and stay in the upper RPMs easily. The used car prices on these is based on pure ignorance. It has nothing to do with quality/reliability/performance. If you stay on top of maintenance; which is easy for anyone with a basic car knowledge; you will have a seriously rewarding car. Thank you for the review!
Yep. Since the seals are between the different chambers, oil has to be injected directly in to keep them lubricated. It burns oil by design, but that's not really a bad thing. Emission regulating committees get a little butthurt about it, but there's no problem as far as the engine is concerned.
@@rockymountainrotary2005 this as well as many people, including myself, premix 2 striker oil in with the gas because the injectors have a better spray pattern. It's a picky motor, but if you take care of it... Wow
I bought a new GT back in 2006 and it's simply a fun car to drive. Sure, it's not going to blow you away with 232 hp, but I can't tell you how it feels to be driving from Las Vegas to Los Angeles on the highway with nobody else around, look down and realize you're going 130mph and not have the car feel stressed one bit. No shaking, no loud noises, nothing. I now have a G37x coupe, which is an automatic transmission, and despite almost 100 more horsepower, it's nowhere near as fun to drive and gets quite throaty and hoarse nearing its redline. With the RX-8, the big negative was the first gear and how slow it felt, but you could downshift into second going around any corner and take it up to about 63 mph before needing to shift again. The G37x unfortunately "hunts around" for what gear to shift to and always has a slight delay, but it does take off like a rocket once it finds it despite weighing over 800 lbs more. As mentioned elsewhere, the RX8 engine has quirks. For me, it was especially evident in the desert. Shortly before I left in 2010, the car was getting to the point the car felt sluggish if I drove for 20 minutes in stop and go traffic on surface streets down to the Strip. The heat just hurts the engine, not to mention it really wants (and needs) to be wound up. I didn't have any noticeable problems once moving to New York State, other than perhaps more stop and go traffic in Buffalo after a three-hour ride on the thruway. Speaking of which, I sit comfortably at 6'4" and 230 lbs in both cars - even with sunroofs - and have driven five plus hours straight in both without stopping; they've both been quite comfortable in that regard.
Flubert McMichaelson Honestly thank you for posting this comment, I'm thinking about test-driving an RX-8 and sitting at 6'2 I was worried I actually wouldn't fit.
Great review like always, I've had my Mazda rx8 r3 for the last nine months or so. Only 26k mileage and it really is the best little thing to have a great time in. People often want more power but like you said it doesn't need it to keep a smile on the face!
Lmfao the way that grin crept onto his face as the RPMs were rising @ 9:27 was priceless XD couldn't help but to smile along with him, great review you really showed just how fun the RX8 can be
I had the exact same thoughts when I drove the RX-8. I almost traded in my BMW 335i for it. The RX-8 with MT is definitely a more fun car to drive than the e90 335i with automatic transmission. If both are MT, it's a toss up. The RX-8 is certainly better in the corners than the 335i. Great review!
There's been heavy construction on a lot in a town I drive by sometimes and they've been hammering huge steal beams for months. And I mean months I feel so bad for the people who live there, every day a constant loud bang from 9-7pm
My fav review on this car ever. Iv owned my share of rotary's. My son now drives an RX8 with 60,000 miles on it. Loves it! He just turned 17. So every once and a while a RX8 video will pop up on my feed. Usually all the same... This video was fun to watch you fall in love with the car after just a few short mins in it. Happens to everyone... lol Iv had friends tell me they've "heard 'they are shitte cars. Then I tell them to take one of mine for a spin.. Usually speechless when they get back.
Thank you for doing this review. It's great to see you enjoy the Rx as much as we do. It is sad that they stopped production in 2012. The last R3 has a comparable power to weight to a similarly vintage Elise. You're right about the car, it's not everyone's cup of tea. But for those that take time to learn it's quirks, it rewards with big smiles on every drive. Do a search for "Lotus Elise and Mazda RX8 Farewell" if you're keen to view.
Totally agree with your review, I drove an rx-8 a few times and the balance and handling are amazing. Motor is silky smooth as well. Really a blast to drive and it begs to be driven.
You pretty much have sumed this car up perfectly. My wife doesn't understand why sometimes I just want to go and drive this car and you have explained it perfectly.
The RX-7 and its competitors (300zx and Supra) weren't cheap cars by any means. They were all in the 35k range for the performance models, which is pretty high for the early 90s
I have a 2005 winning blue grand touring. 150,000 plus miles. only issue was a ignition coil and my occasional flooding(100% my fault). it's a fun car to drive. was my first car I ever bought new. love it!!!!!!!!!
Today I test drove both a series 2 RX-8 and a Scion FRS, and you are right. They are nearly identical to each other in handling and feel. Both put a smile on my face. I wish I didn't have to choose one over the other.
Thanks for the video. I like the door configuration and how it looks like the one on an extended-cab pickup truck. The sound is great as well; it almost sounds like the new Turbo 4 Camaro.
Dude...i first watched your car review on CRZ...and after i watched this...now my intention of buying CRZ has changed...RX8 even cheaper here in Malaysia and yeah thanks for this honest review
+Ben Daulton They have engine issues if not taken care of. Just have to be meticulous about oil levels and changes, revving the car out to at least 7k every few days, and making sure not to cut the car off when it's still fairly cold too often(which is something you should be doing in any car). Do those and the engine will last for a pretty good while.
excellent Honest review. NAILED IT! Jekyll n hyde for sure... MANUAL A MUST AS YOU SAID. AVOID AUTOMATIC LIKE THE PLAGUE. 2012 i bought mine. 2004 ...mica blue. GT. LEATHER optional spare.... VERY HAPPY. thx for the review. i still learn everyday about the WANKEL.
I have no idea what he said around 8:00 but the look on his face just means I'm completely sold. It's how I want to feel when I put my foot down. I currently own an MX5 and 130bhp just doesn't give you that smile..
For some reason I've just bought one of these to do for my son, I was going to fit a V6, but after watching this I think I'm going to keep the rotary. I found the rest of the car is preety good, but I've heard the engines were very temprimental, but if it's just a matter of staying on top of it then it'll do for me. Many thanks, good vid.
Warrior Wombat rotary engines tend to fail because people don't drive them like they were built for. You have to redline the hell out of these cars to make the engine last. You can't drive this car like a Civic or a Camry you have to drive it like a bat out of hell if you want it to last. It keeps the carbon build up down from around the triangle. So if you buy a used one rev the hell out of them for a good week to get rid of the carbon build up before it's too late.
Thank you for making this video. I really want one of these cars. I hear lots of people complain about the rotary engine, but I still would like to get one. I love the look of the inside and outside. Thanks again for the video.
Thank you so much for the video, I've been asking for years for a rotory review and there it is :D this really means a lot!! Awesome video, your channel keeps on getting better and better.
I have an 04 rx8, and I love it, but here's some serious advice if you want to own one. Also I'll say this before I start, if you're mechanically inclined, read 0.5 and you probably don't need me to tell you the rest, if not skip it. 0.5) 13b-rew swap for more power, keeps the weight distribution balanced. There are kits out there to do it so you don't have to cut into the firewall to fit it, also keep the rx8's trans, it won't cook you alive like the rx7's trans. You can swap in something like a bmw e90 rear end to handle more power too, but I don't know what the drivetrain components are rated for, and I honestly don't know a lot about swapping engines I haven't done it. 1.) I'll put a carrot on the stick and let you all know what's good first. Seats 4 comfortably (actual people can fit in the back not just midgets), handles amazing (50-50 weight distribution, double wishbone suspension in the front, and multi-link in the rear), hits 9k rpms, cool dash, short shift distance, short distance and quick engaging clutch, good but not invasive traction control, can do drifts pretty easy if you wanna, "cheap, and kinda reliable." (You'll understand that if you read everything.) 2.) Cheap, Fast, Reliable (all of those in relation to rotaries and the rx8) pick two 3.) You will have more power and better handling stock than other sports cars, but getting more power is hard and expensive so unless you seriously know what you're doing and have money to spend, then don't buy the car for straightline speed. For example a new exhaust can cost between roughly $800-2,000, and net almost no power gain over stock, but they can be nice for sound and looks. A new air filter will net you an hp gain of about 0.5% if it's one of two brands, k&n or racing beat. Almost every other intake equals up to a 10% horsepower loss (yes, loss) over stock. 215~230 up is about the cap for na rx8's and it isn't necessarily cheap to even get that. Those rx8's are usually bridgeported with only racing in mind, and are difficult to drive on the street or even illegal on the street (won't pass emissions) plus porting makrs your already meh mpg worse. You can't fix it with a turbo either, it's even more expensive and will net you only up to about 450 hp. The rx8 doesn't like tk be boosted because the compression ratio is already extremely high at 13:1 (turbo rx7's always had lower compression ratios than na rx7's for this reason) which means that when you add boost he compression ratio increases ecen further. It can be done and driven on the street below about 300 hp, anymore and your apex seals won't last as long and the car will be difficult to daily. 4.) Have money left over for issues, such as the feared loss of compression. 5.) Understand that you will have to work on this car, so if you aren't willing to work on your car and can't pay someone to do it, don't buy this car, but also don't be scared of it, even if you haven't worked on a car before this car isn't too hard to work on. I'm a teenager who hasn't worked on a car much until now but I've fixed all kinds of stuff on my RX8. 6.) This should go without saying, but, let the car warm up before driving it, redline it to stop carbon build-up, use 91 octane or better gasoline, premix (in most cases), take care of the car and stay up on maitnance. I can't stress these enough, just do them. Also change all the fluids once you buy the car, you can't truly confirm that the last owner changed them recently enough. Maybe even get new spark plugs just in case. 7.) This should also be obvious, but, don't get stuck with a lemon, have someone who knows rotaries or even better has an rx8 come with you to check out a car. Make sure to test the compression before you buy one, mileage is necessarily an indicator of the engine's condition. If you can try to aviod the 04 models, they aren't flawed or anything, but are just older and tend to have more problems than most of the other model years. (According to a survey by driven by madness' TH-cam channel, who is a great source for rx8 diy's I might add) 8.) The internet is your friend. Everything you need to know about your car, and what to do with it is there. rx8club.com is a great example. Once again I'll say I probably shouldn't have to tell you this but I'm saying it anyways because it's important, always check the information you find on the internet. If you're looking through a thread on rx8 club or Facebook and it sounds like they have the answer to your problem, check their profile. How long have they been a member? Are they verified? Do other people agree with them? How many posts have they made? Do other sites have similar information? Etc. 9.) Congrats on reading this far, clearly you care about the rx8, at least some, or you're finding mistake or retort to roast me in the reply section. The last thing you need to know is that you should put it in a high gear for city driving to save gas, don't do this all the time, still drive it like it's supposed to be driven sometimes, even on the daily. Anyways that's long but that's what you need to know! Fellow RX8 owners please feel free to add or correct me I honestly don't know a lot compared to some of you sensei guru's.
love the rx8 i own one love it so glad that you made a review on this car alot of people dont seem to want to do them i definitly think the rotary engine is better and way more powerfull better then anyother engine in its range put a twin turbo on an rx8 and you will be almost unbeatable to any person enless then have a real high power car this video accually got my attention im going to start checking in with your channel more often keep the rx8 videos comin and ill probably see you at cars and coffee in wexford
A couple of years ago, I might would have went with this car over my Mustang, but with that rotary engine I couldn't do it. If I was a little more mechanically inclined and had the tools, equipment, and money to do it, I would have put a LS motor in it. But when it comes down to it, I like my mustang better and I don't have to deal with an engine swap or anything. Still, I love that RX8, and that color is stunning!
My friend had a 40th anniversary rx8. Man rotaries are great. Sound exotic and he had a full exhaust system headers back and man it sounded crazy. Its is light and handles great. Not very fast at all lol but fun.
I owned a 2004 RX-8 for 4-5 years. Same color, installed the BHR ignition, Racing beat intake, along with suspension work and 245 all around with BFgoodrich T/A KDW's. Car was fun when there were corners or driving through mountain roads. But for regular driving, it was boring, slow and had terrible gas mileage (around 16-17 mpg) average. Was happy to get rid of it.
That's gotta be one of the most clean RX-8's left in existence. Very cool to have a production car that revs to 9,000 although I don't think the exhaust note is very desirable. Big plus to the extremely short factory shifter though.
Bro I miss mines! I had the 40th anniversary addition. It was totaled out after a rear accident; but was easily one of the best handling cars I've ever had. People just don't understand that you HAVE to drive them as if they were stolen!!
BRZs loved to chase me in my RX-8 (first car!). I miss it so much after selling it and buying a Honda Ridgeline but now I’m about to move onto the 2018 Mustang GT, so excited!!!
I owned one just exactly like that back then. It was a great car and even drove okay in the winter with snow tires, but whenever it got very cold it wouldn't start. I had to trade it on a Pontiac so I could get back and forth to work on time. Lost my ass on that thing. I always wished it had a V-8 and handled that good. Now I have a new Mustang and I have the total package ;)
*Today marks the 6th anniversary of the end of RX production, on Thursday June 21, 2012 at **4:30**pm the very last RX car ever to be produced rolled off the assembly line for the last time.*
I was thinking about buying an RX8, but there's a shit ton of snow here in the winter, and I don't feel responsible enough to take care of a rotary engine. Those bad boys need a ton of love. I baby my car a lot, but Wankel engines are a different story.
I have always loved the RX8 they are definitely wonderful cars and I just actually know that one day I will definitely get myself one of these cars and wow I can't really wait to own one
Nice he said engine is best/worst part, good review too. I didn't know it was that balanced and fun. The only real problems the engine has is that it burns oil (just check and add periodically) and the APEX SEALS. This is to be expected. It is a very potent sporty engine (about 30% down on mpg efficiency comparatively) but is worth the fun factor for it's unique revvy disposition (race cars have sporty camshaft profiles like this). No wonder it fills the "cult classic" niche' like no other car can. Respect comes in the form of 2 extra rotors in that world. Could even add a couple more... They're like lego's.
Hey can I get Some advice then pls?? someone ran into my car in August (First accident) and my car was totaled they're giving me 10k for it. I've found a 2004 Madza Rx-8 in red just like yours XD. But like idk anything about Madza's I'd only use it for commute, Work & School. And I also wanted something a bit more sporty than average. And I Found one with no problems for 5k Is it worth it??
drove one daily for 3 years, it is low and people dont see you. It forces you to drive aggressively ( drop money on a turbo, wheels/tires, shift kit and tune with intake and exhaust ) did Many long rides and the seats are AMAZING
I recommend getting a 2006 or newer. 1st generation 04-05 has a bad reputation. My 2006 just hit around 101,100. In just 6 months going to meets and traveling I've put about 7k miles. I got mine tuned right away, upgraded the brake pads to carbon ceramic, rims, upgraded cooling system (almost impossible to make it hot) and did a muffler delete. It works perfect, has a nice growl to it (its not the annoying type) the brakes make a huge difference. If you buy one 1st thing you gotta do is take it to a shop/do it yourself oil change, coil pack, and upgrade the starter and it'll start effortlessly and right away. If you decide to premix make sure you're using premium and rotary oil, do not use universal 2 stroke oil since the marine components it has will clog the systems. There's a place online that sales premix oil special for these engines. The rx8 is not meant to be fuel efficient so driving it in low rpms is no good, the car is its happiest cruising between 5,500-6,500. If you have any more questions or wanna know what its like to own one shoot me a message on IG, Boosted.HP.ig
I have a 2005 Mazda Rx-8 GT and this car when tested by car and Driver on the track it kept up with the Porsche of its time and surpassed all the other cars below the Porsche and gave the gtr a run for its money... I stomp tons of cars in the corners with a stock suspension and if I did coil overs and did anything to make it faster this car would be a track monster just look at Mike kuhn he wins autocross to this day with an rx8
One of the most fun and tossable cars I’ve ever owned. In fact, I’d rather daily drive the RX8 than my 2013 Viper. It did blow an apex seal but it was also because I drove it moving a shit ton of cloths and a 36” flat screen tv plus computers and shit from Dallas to Los Angeles driving up the elevation crossing NM where it broke down after about 12 hrs of nonstop driving. It’s not meant for higher loads and long driving. You just need to watch the oil level and let the car off for breaks and check up if carrying a full load.
"They like to burn oil sometimes" - they actually HAVE to burn oil, they squirt oil into the combustion chambers so you have to add oil to them periodically (which is probably why he keeps a bottle in the back).
"alrighty lets turn onto this back road here" I always love what happens after that
Alexandre Poirier 😂😂
Callan harvey thats what i say to my gf before going to church
Me, too, man
Me too
He busts nuts and says “ well that was fun!! “
Excellent comment. Thank you for your insight!
Never thought I'd see you review an RX-8. I love these cars! I really want one! Thanks for the great video!

who else is
watching in 2019 cuz they want one but are terrified to buy one?
I'd like this chassis and body with just a nice reliable 4 cylinder engine.
Yep
Lol truth. I'm looking for the best motor to swap in
Sr20 mabey?
The motor is not bad this car just takes a little more attention to detail on maintenance
Still looks fresh and modern, despite all the years!
I love the extra bottle of oil in the trunk. Indicating the Rotory burns some oil lol
Yep. Since the seals are between the different chambers, oil has to be injected directly in to keep them lubricated. It burns oil by design, but that's not really a bad thing. Emission regulating committees get a little butthurt about it, but there's no problem as far as the engine is concerned.
hardly uses oil, and a £20 container lasts me over a month
Michael Hanson I does. I own one
its designed to do that so the apex seals last longer
@@rockymountainrotary2005 this as well as many people, including myself, premix 2 striker oil in with the gas because the injectors have a better spray pattern. It's a picky motor, but if you take care of it... Wow
Loved my '04 RX-8. Always enjoyed rotary engines...also had four RX-7s. Fun to drive; only drawback was fuel mileage.
love the suicide doors wish they would do this more in modern cars
clamshell doors
Freestyle doors~
Justin Welch pussylips clasps
I like these doors too
Its only cool if you have 1 passanger or less frequently. Otherwise it's a pain in the ass! (own an rx8 for 4+ years)
I bought a new GT back in 2006 and it's simply a fun car to drive.
The s1 rx8 2004-2008 has 238hp
Loved my rx8 sooo much I bought two of them. Every time I was on the road I was smiling from ear to ear. 👍🏻
Great review like always, I've had my Mazda rx8 r3 for the last nine months or so. Only 26k mileage and it really is the best little thing to have a great time in. People often want more power but like you said it doesn't need it to keep a smile on the face!
Lmfao the way that grin crept onto his face as the RPMs were rising @ 9:27 was priceless XD couldn't help but to smile along with him, great review you really showed just how fun the RX8 can be
the best way I can summarize the Mazda Rx8 is, my wallet hates it, but my heart loves it.
Because of gas?
Ditto... bought mine used 5 weeks in1200$ for could pack.. stereo quit..clutch needed replacement:-) Fun as hell driving it though :-)

Finally! I've been waiting so long for this review.
i was so excited to see you review this. i haven't found many reviews of these and I love these cars.
Great review!
wth....seems that Thor was working a job that day while you recorded this.
There's been heavy construction on a lot in a town I drive by sometimes and they've been hammering huge steal beams for months. And I mean months I feel so bad for the people who live there, every day a constant loud bang from 9-7pm
ok
the sound of these engines are quite interesting, definitely a great fun car.
Great Review Matt!
Especially great sounding inside the car.. Sound is addictive and intoxicating.. Love it !!!
Congrats on 250k Matt! Great to see you review a rotary!
I was just looking for RX8 reviews last night lol, great timing
You pretty much have sumed this car up perfectly. My wife doesn't understand why sometimes I just want to go and drive this car and you have explained it perfectly.
Too bad the RX-9 will probably be hella pricey. Won't be a true successor to the RX-8, which sucks for poor people like me.
Same as the supra
Surprised ?
The RX-7 and its competitors (300zx and Supra) weren't cheap cars by any means. They were all in the 35k range for the performance models, which is pretty high for the early 90s
fd rx7 was 89k in Aus , rx8 55k no wonder rx8 is shit
Rx8 wax 55k / Fd rx7 89k brand new . very reason rx8 piece of dogshit compared to 90s rx7
I have a 2005 winning blue grand touring. 150,000 plus miles. only issue was a ignition coil and my occasional flooding(100% my fault). it's a fun car to drive. was my first car I ever bought new. love it!!!!!!!!!
"apologies for the hammering"
lmfao i love this guy
Today I test drove both a series 2 RX-8 and a Scion FRS, and you are right. They are nearly identical to each other in handling and feel. Both put a smile on my face. I wish I didn't have to choose one over the other.
Thanks for the video. I like the door configuration and how it looks like the one on an extended-cab pickup truck. The sound is great as well; it almost sounds like the new Turbo 4 Camaro.
This car is in amazing condition omg
I still watching this in 2020 cause i love it
Dude...i first watched your car review on CRZ...and after i watched this...now my intention of buying CRZ has changed...RX8 even cheaper here in Malaysia and yeah thanks for this honest review
Triangles! I like how the owner carries a quart of oil
I always keep oil in my cars, but then again all my cars are old
Somebody watches Regularcarreviews
I was waiting for someone to get that lol
The handbook recommends carrying 1L (about a quart) in the boot/trunk.
+Ben Daulton They have engine issues if not taken care of. Just have to be meticulous about oil levels and changes, revving the car out to at least 7k every few days, and making sure not to cut the car off when it's still fairly cold too often(which is something you should be doing in any car). Do those and the engine will last for a pretty good while.
i love your face when you rev it. I smile every time too, and i also take every excuse to go for a ride.
I love this guys reactions when he drives you can tell he really does love cars
For real! He gets the biggest smile on his face it’s awesome
the first time i saw this car i was 9 years old. I fell in love...Now am 22 and still loving it!
can't believe he done this a month ago, I'm just now looking at getting this car lol
Michael Johnson u get it yet?
marc I'm supposed to get one as my first car soon.
Noah Bishop same here bro 😩
Noah Bishop did you ever get it? I'm looking at buying ome rn and I'm trying to find someone to ask questions about it
CAPN CRUNCH U bro I would honestly look somewhere else this would destroy your wallet as a first car
SUBARUWRXFAN is one of few people who have in-depth review about the Rx8, So this video could really help the channel grow bigger.
Great video! Would love to see a review of a Nissan 300zx twin turbo
excellent Honest review.
David Garrison; I just bought one with the automatic and I love it . what would be the problem that you are saying to avoid it ? thank you. Rain
I have no idea what he said around 8:00 but the look on his face just means I'm completely sold. It's how I want to feel when I put my foot down. I currently own an MX5 and 130bhp just doesn't give you that smile..
Great car. great handling. 50/50 weight distribution. a manual transmission is a must. I have a borlo exhaust and love it.
@@Scorpion54092
That and people fail to properly keep these engines lubricated along with failing to letting the car fully warm up upon starting it up
Always loved the RX8. Really fun to carve canyons in!
The RX-8 was one of the best and reminds me that Mazda really needs to get back on the Grand Touring car horse. Great video!
Seats 4 comfortably (actual people can fit in the back not just midgets), handles amazing (50-50 weight distribution, double wishbone suspension in the front, and multi-link in the rear), hits 9k rpms, cool dash, short shift distance, short distance and quick engaging clutch, good but not invasive traction control, can do drifts pretty easy if you wanna, "cheap, and kinda reliable." (You'll understand that if you read everything.)
2.) Cheap, Fast, Reliable (all of those in relation to rotaries and the rx8) pick two
3.) You will have more power and better handling stock than other sports cars, but getting more power is hard and expensive so unless you seriously know what you're doing and have money to spend, then don't buy the car for straightline speed.
(According to a survey by driven by madness' TH-cam channel, who is a great source for rx8 diy's I might add)
8.) The internet is your friend.
I use to have one 2 years ago and I loved it, if It wasn't so unreliable I'd trade my mk7 gti back in a heartbeat. that car has so much character
love the rx8 i own one love it so glad that you made a review on this car alot of people dont seem to want to do them i definitly think the rotary engine is better and way more powerfull better then anyother engine in its range
put a twin turbo on an rx8 and you will be almost unbeatable to any person enless then have a real high power car
this video accually got my attention im going to start checking in with your channel more often keep the rx8 videos comin and ill probably see you at cars and coffee in wexford
Really like these older car reviews!!! keep up the awsome work matt!!
ive waited so long for you to review this car cause im planning to buy it as my first car
been waiting for a RX-8 review...awesome!
Why do some people hate the RX-8, it is a pretty cool car. I mean it is way more easy to find than an FD RX-7, and more practical. It is a great car.
Been waiting for this one since 2014! Awesome to see, great review
Miss my rx-8, sold it for a 2009 GLI 2 months ago.
worst trade ever wtf
You trade an unreliable fun car for an unreliable boring car? -_-
Bad trade!
You didn't deserve a RX-8 if you traded for that
I owned a 2004 RX-8 for 4-5 years.
Black rims would make those yellow calipers pop along with a black plate. Gorgeous car.
New fan/subscriber of your channel here! Really like and enjoy your videos, Matt!
I remember going for these RX-8's in the Need for Speed games.
I'm jealous of the blue paint and yellow brake calipers.
That's gotta be one of the most clean RX-8's left in existence. Very cool to have a production car that revs to 9,000 although I don't think the exhaust note is very desirable. Big plus to the extremely short factory shifter though.
he takes great care of his car!
i love this car it looks gorgeous happy to see ya reviewing this car matt
Thank you so much for review one of my favorite cars! You're the best!!!
Still waiting for this guy to review an rx7
Bro I miss mines! I had the 40th anniversary addition. It was totaled out after a rear accident; but was easily one of the best handling cars I've ever had. People just don't understand that you HAVE to drive them as if they were stolen!!
Loving all these older well kept car reviews!
BRZs loved to chase me in my RX-8 (first car!). I miss it so much after selling it and buying a Honda Ridgeline but now I’m about to move onto the 2018 Mustang GT, so excited!!!
that new intro is looking really great matt
Good review as always man! I drove a Rx8 a week ago and I thought it was pretty good for what it is!
I like how they put the rotor styling on the car as a Easter egg type thing
I owned one just exactly like that back then. It was a great car and even drove okay in the winter with snow tires, but whenever it got very cold it wouldn't start. I had to trade it on a Pontiac so I could get back and forth to work on time. Lost my ass on that thing. I always wished it had a V-8 and handled that good. Now I have a new Mustang and I have the total package ;)
*Today marks the 6th anniversary of the end of RX production, on Thursday June 21, 2012 at **4:30**pm the very last RX car ever to be produced rolled off the assembly line for the last time.*
Sold my rx8 hi-power about 5 years ago and I still miss it!
Once that RX8 get round 80,000 miles is when the serious trouble starts. Tell your friend to keep a close eye on it

boring
steven pearson ??????
steven pearson
Boring because he is warning people of its future engine failures?
Sounds like he drives it so sparingly that it won't get up that high anytime soon (ever) -_-
Same as various new VAG models will have different issues at 128 000 km`s.
Ive been waiting for this for so long
Excellent Demonstration. REALLY want 1. That exact 1, blue, 2004, but automatic. Haters will hate!! 😁👋
I just bought a 2009 RX-8 GT about a month ago. Love the car so much. Especially love the high rev meter.... I've got a lead food lol
Love to see you enjoying a car as you review it. Keep it up! Do you think you can review the 4th generation Mitsubishi Eclipse (2006+)? thanks!
This my new baby ruby red I love it and this video just explained the beauty of my experience
And I Found one with no problems for 5k
Is it worth it??
drove one daily for 3 years, it is low and people dont see you.
If you have any more questions or wanna know what its like to own one shoot me a message on IG, Boosted.HP.ig
finally you did the rx8 love mine and love hitting 9k rpm
Anyone know the background music at 1:16?
This car still looks modern today
If you don't have an auxiliary port or USB, just buy an FM transmitter, they are like $15
@//Project Grassroots lmk how that goes cuz I rlly need my music when driving this thing hahaha
i am a simple man
i see Subrauwrxfan reviewing JDM cars
i hit a like
7:52 acceleration.
I would buy one just for that interior sound.. I absolutely 💘 LOVE the sound from inside the car.. 😆!!!!
I have an 09 gt and love, it always turns heads. If u r ever in the New York area u can review mine matt:)
yeah I have an 05 gt.. despite the chipping paint many will ask me if it's a new car..
I was waiting for this!!!!
Great review, Matt!
The S2 has an aux jack in the center console, too bad about there not being one in the S1.
"They like to burn oil sometimes" - they actually HAVE to burn oil, they squirt oil into the combustion chambers so you have to add oil to them periodically (which is probably why he keeps a bottle in the back).
